Some recommendations from me..... and I really do recommend keeping these in bottle as suggested - as they taste dramatically better. Westvleteren is overhyped, even if it is very good.... but these are really only slightly behind and you won't miss the westy:

- St Bernardus abt 12 (I personally think this is the best of the style in the world)
- Chimay Bleu (which does need a good 2-5 years in bottle to integrate)
- Rochefort 10 (needing maybe up to 2 years in bottle)
- Westmalle Tripel (no age needed) and Dubbel (not too bad in young bottles, but improves slighly after around a year)
- Orval (no age needed)
- La Trappe (De Koeningshoeven) Dubbel (not too bad in young bottles, but improves slighly after around a year - I rate this much higher than their tripel and quadrupel)
- Schlenkerla Rauschbier (an accquired taste though!)
- Köstritzer Schwarzbier
- Corsendonk Christmas Ale
- Anything at all produced by the superlative Durham Brewery

I also play with LONG aging of Thomas Hardy ale and Samichlaus ale (~20 years aging), when you can get some extraordinary results.

Cheers.

i loooove that Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier -- i prefer the urbock over the weizen or marzen ... i actually had the opportunity to try a Schlenkerla on tap a couple days ago: they called it their "Oak Smoke".  At first, I thought it was one of their regular bottlings with an "americanized" name, but the abv on it was 8.0%, and I know their urbock tops out around 6.2%, so I know that had to be a special keg.  It was supremely tasty, especially when mixed with some Stone Ruination DIPA (about 2/3 "Oaksmoke" to 1/3 Ruination) -- the blend was incredible: while the beer was in the mouth it acted like the Rauchbier, but after swallowing it was pure hoppy IPA on the finish -- totally crazy!  It was one of the better beer mixes I've pulled off.

Orval is another beer on your list that I'm quite find of, but paying $6 per 11.2oz is not something I can bring myself to do very often.

Other beers over the past few days (included stops at Pizza Port Brewing, Stone Brewery, and favorite local watering hole)
Duchesse de Bourgnone
Stone - Double Dry Hopped IPA
Stone - Levitation Ale
Stone - IPA
Stone - "Ruination" Double IPA
Port Brewing - "Jetty" IPA
Port Brewing - (a very tasty Hazelnut Brown ale)
New Belgium Brewing - "La Folie" Sour Brown Ale
Moose Drool - Brown Ale
Monk's- Flemish Sour Red Ale
Sierra Nevada - Pale Ale
Green Flash - IPA
"Old Speckled Hen" - English Ale (on nitro)
Bear Republic - "Racer 5" IPA
Dale's - Pale Ale
Dale Brothers - "Winter Haze" Winter Ale

had these last night:
Kronenburg 1664
Drakes 1500 Pale Ale
Moose Drool

Going to Stone Brewery tonight ... will be fun to see what special brews they have on tap!

curious what you thought if these three...as for me, I had a Cucapa "Chupacabra" Pale Ale, from Mexico...quite a nice beer...also, I had a St. Feuillian Cuvee du Noel, which was also very good, if a little boozy

"Rochefort 8, 10 and 12 - BIG FAN

Has anyone tried the 14?"

At the risk of sounding like a know-it-all, there is no such thing as a Rochefort 12 or 14.

They make a 6, an 8, and a 10.

I never drink beer--to me, it tastes like what I would imagine bilgewater to taste like--but after reading these threads, maybe I'll give some of the more popular reccomendations a try.

Fuller's Discovery for me. Does anyone know the Wellington in Birmingham? If you don't and you're ever in Bham you should give it a visit.

Try your local Anchor Steam (San Francisco), or Samuel Adams - both great beers.
If those fail you we'll start on British Bitter.

Oskar Blues - "Yella Pils" Pilsener --- this is one of my favorite pilseners
Bear Republic - "Racer 5" IPA --- ol' standby
Dogfish Head - "60 Min" IPA
Anderson Valley - "Hop Ottin'" IPA --- was happy to find this at local liquor store for $8.99 for a sixer.

Ninkasi in Eugene, Oregon is making some excellent, full flavor beer. I like their interpretation of all the styles, but my favorites are Red, Pale and Total Domination IPA.

what did you think about that Alesmith "My Bloody Valentine"? I had their "Yule Smith" Imperial Red Ale @ my holiday beer tasting, and though it was really good, despite not being "seasonal" at all

I liked it: it came across as a rich, spicy, hoppy Christmas Ale. By the bottom of the glass it was getting a tad malty for my preferences, but it's a very nice beer.

a couple Racer 5's last night.

had a slew of fantastic beer last weekend as well:
2008 HaandBryggeriet Oud Bruin "Haandbakk" Wild Ale (Norway, Drammen): holy freakin' crap, this stuff is delicious!!
N.V. Jolly Pumpkin Biere de Garde Biere de Mars (USA, Michigan): the best Jolly Pumpkin i've yet to taste
2006 Drie Fonteinen Oude Lambic "Doesjel" (Belgium, Flanders, Brussels): very nice, but not quite as good as their Oude Gueuze.
N.V. Brasserie a Vapeur Saison "Vapeur en Folie" (Belgium, Wallonie): not as good as the "Cochonne", imo. At least this didn't have the yucky nose of the "Cochonne."
N.V. Brewery Ommegang Biere de Garde Biere de Mars (USA, New York): very nice, not as good as the Jolly Pumpkin.

I was jumping around for awhile from Racer 5 to Brooklyn to Fordham to Smuttynose, but I have finally settled on a beer that you can pretty much pick up anywhere.  Negra Modelo.  Fantastic Mexican beer.  I always keep a few types of beer in the fridge but this seems to be my go to in recent months.

Their website says "Double D Blond". It's a blond ale with a touch of wheat.

Or quite possibly a big beer that's too much to handle.

JC.....that's intense. We've got a BrewDog retailer in my area, will have to see if they know anything about it (or happen to have a leftover bottle from the last release). They've got a LOT of treasures hidden on their shelves and in their coolers.

Ok...so after grafstrb's incessant posting about Racer 5, Racer 5, Racer 5, Racer 5. I have finally gotten around to trying it. good lord this is good beer!

Great lightness up front with some hints of pineapple through the hop filled finish. The thing that amazes me is the freshness and restraint shown in the hops. And as a hop head myself, I dig hoppy beers, but this is a hoppy beer, without it being a hoppy beer, if that makes sense. So balance and layered. I now see why he drinks it so often. Yum!

I Racer 5!

I will certainly try the other beers from Bear Republic. I can't see them doing wrong after having this beer (and subsequently killing the 6 pack )

I know I need to expand my horizons more, but I went back to an old favorite last night with the La Chouffe.

The Houblon is still a big step up, but I love the smooth texture and lightly citrused finish on this beer. Tasty!
