Kids are going out to dinner tonight so just my wife and I so that means the "good stuff" comes out. It was between two wines and the 2012 Kobalt Cabernet Sauvignon is going to be saved for another day. Tonight we will drink:

2006 Araujo Eisele Syrah

Down to only one bottle of this which makes me nervous. This will be one of the first wines I reload on when I get a new job. I need to add some 2009 & 2010 also. A couple of small filet mignon, heirloom tomatoes and Caesar salad will accompany the wine.

Happy New Year !!

Rick

Rich, which vintages of the Araujo have you preferred, and what are your thoughts on aging potential for their Syrah?

For us tonight, Jaume' Serra Cristalino Brut Rose' NV. We very much enjoy Cava as an alternative to more expensive sparkling vino. The Brut Rose' was a prior hit and Ms. Frugal picked up another bottle at TW for < $8 last year. Menu is Mexican slaw, tamales (outsourced), chips, green and red salsas, and homemade parfaits. Staying home and watching "Dr. Strange" from Marvel. Seemed appropriate for NYE.

Happy New Year Cheers!

Easy night tonight of eggplant parmesean at home. Decided on a 2004 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill for starters and then a 1996 Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra with dinner.

We are staying home and cooking here.

Contemplating a few different bubbles. I think we'll keep it really easy and just pop one of the many NV Veuves we have received as gifts and save the good stuff for another night, as we're both a bit under the weather. We're likely not to even finish a bottle tonight, so we can have the second half in the morning.

I'll be out at the grill, which I now am a bit concerned about as my cold has taken hold of my body this afternoon/evening. We're doing surf & turf with grilled lobster and fillets. I'm planning on pairing a 2009 Cobb Coastlands PN with dinner.

I'm guessing we'll be in bed before midnight, and hopefully feeling better in the AM.

Happy New Year to all!!

2009 Pichon Baron with T-bones. HAD to be a Bordeaux from a place I visited this year. Remembered that it was tasty from our visit to the Chateau, and it is!

Really , how was it . People gave me hell for drinking my Baron and Comtesse so early . I thought they were great . Have held off tasting the 2010 because of that , they tell me to wait at least 5 years

Not surprisingly, the 2009 was drinking fine. I decanted it, and though it will last for a long time the fruit shown through beautifully, which I think is a hallmark of that vintage.

We have a 2010 3000 Años Bullas in the decanter, and I imagine other wines will be opened during the course of the evening.

I think Araujo Eisele Syrahs can go a long time, 15 years plus. Same for Alban Syrahs. It depends on how you like to drink them. You like more fruit then you drink them younger. Like them softer and more savory components then you drink them older.

The 2006 is in a great window. Still has plenty of tannin but is becoming softer with some savory elements now. I've had 2005, 2006 and 2009. The 2009 is a bit young still. Personally, I would give the Araujo Syrah 7-8 years minimum. I haven't tried drinking any 2002, 2003 & 2004 but I would think they would still be great.

2010 Congruence Coombsville Reserve.

Started off a little rough, but after 1/2 hour in the glass it turned really nice. Deep tangy dark fruit and a little spice with nice acidity and a little backbone.

Sipping a nice enough white wine (Brianna grape) from Iowa, which pairs nicely with SPICY green curry & chicken. Good body with a semillon waxy white flower character.
