Purchased locally 2-3 years past release. Opened 3-1/2hrs B4 dinner and decided to slow ox in Riedel BDX & Btl. About 90 minutes prior to dinner I switched to Riedel Burgs which opened up the nose in a big way! The Burg glasses caused the already elegant palate to take on an immediate Chambolle like silk. More & More I find Reidel Burgs to be my "go to" glass for any reds and its also excellent with white Burgs. Not sure I need Riedel BDXs for anything :).

Superb benchmark BDX fully in its best window! Semi opaque ruby color w/ only a hint of lightening. Enticing big cigar box, herbs & dark fruit aromas. Perfectly proportioned, focused & inviting black fruit, mineral, cedar, & spice. Hint of forest floor. Such harmony & elegance! I love it's boundless freshness that surrounds the tertiary notes. Seemingly weightless for BDX. Regal, classy and impossible to let sit! 12.5% alc If I see more, I'm buying them for midterm drinking.

first half of bottle, truly amazing--big, plush, super linear with nice elegance of grapefruit and lime/lemon....but second half, it kind of faded, super soft, plush, but might be mistaken for a lot of nice other affordable chardonnays

I've had mixed experiences with this...first time, it opened up super thin and carbonic, but then opened up and it was a nice drinkable, elegant table wine....second time, in inferior stemware at a Residence Inn, the first half was amazing--super plush with great drips of fruit but faded in the second half

Half bottle--rich and dense and luxurious. A little bit overdone in my opinion. I had it next to the 2019 Sonoma-Cutrer Sonoma Coast and I liked that better, more simple and elegant (and cheaper).

Much better the second time. Think this just either aged better or there was just enough variance to make it special...feminine and elegant, medium bodied and long...sour cherry with plum and blackberry...soft and luscious...shorter finish.

Received this bottle as a gift and opened it on new years eve at 12am.

Similar tasting note as in 2019 and 2020:

"Intense bubbles, almond bitters, sour apple freshness and yeasty dough. Easy to drink.
Liked it better than in 2010 but given the price, I prefer Bollinger/Roederer (~40€) or Feuillatte/Piper Heidsieck (~20-25€)."

Just a great exquisite wine with the right amount of structural complexity and elegance. Worth way more than it’s price point. Super drinkable with nice dark cherry fruit in the front third of the palate. If you had to ding this wine, the flavor profile favors California, but the French side anchors it down

Six from Safeway (Private home in Arlington, Virginia): Of the six Safeway specials, I was expecting more from this bottle, as 2014 was a fine vintage for Rioja. But the wine came across as rather boring and lacking in expression. Some redcurrant, some ripe black fruit, as well, but as if they were in first gear and not even in third gear. I like subtle wines, but this was hiding somewhere in the backyard. It was furthermore a tad dilute on the palate, as if coming from excessively high yields. Not sure.

A little disappointing. Might be more a 91. Good intense, dense condensed structure but soft given the age—so nice tension there.

However, structure not overly complex, elegant nor multi dimensional. Would say the same about the palate and flavor profile.

Some hints of Italian fruit but dominated by dark fruit and dark earth, Bordeaux accents/terroir, dark plum and raisins/prunes

4/25/2020 12:20:00 AM - Sorry I never responded. I wish CT notified us when there was a comment or question, as I rarely go back and check my postings...I probably didn't decant too much. I tend to be a pop and pour guy, which probably hinders my full experience often. Think all the Valdicavas do better with decanting...but there is great variability I am discovering in different vintages...and finding that I tend to like Bolgheri more as a region

Very tannic, mouthfeel a bit thin - not as plush as I expected. Flavors seem to be there, but a little disjointed. A little hot on the finish. Try again next year. Should have decanted this one.

usually disappointed in Montelena Estate because I open it too early and it's super undrinkable....have learned to wait as the older it is the better it gets! this one was pretty good, but not mind blowing...good sweet cherry fruit with some background of dark fruit....good layers but not as big and complex as I would have thought...probably just a tad young but ready to drink and will hit prime in next 2-3 years

A lush, though a bit shallow, modern Cabernet that could use another year or so. Dark purple in color, full in body, nose of black cherry and licorice. Tastes of blueberry, milk chocolate, and cedar, with a nice though brief finish. 14.8% alcohol. Blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, and 2% Petit Verdot. Despite having fruit in spades, this lacks depth in the mid-palate, which is a bit frustrating at this price point. It has some structure to improve with time, but I doubt it will ever be great.

was blown away by the first third of the bottle...for $44, it tasted like a $100-150 bottle, layers of extreme elegance with some bordeaux smokiness/leather, just totally refined (97-98)...but as the wine changed, the bordeaux smokiness became more bothersome and less integrated into the wine, and the changing wine became more harsh, flabby, and less integrated, too acidic at the back end (92-93)...so I'm taking the average, but really good value for how big and elegant the wine is overall.
