2006 Lake's Folly Cabernets

Hunter Valley Red Blend more

Excellent, still drinking beautifully. Similar comments to previously: blueberry, chocolate, white pepper, leather, with developed fruit and soft full long finish. Held up very well alongside a 2005 Ramage la Batisse, why had more of the classic dry Bordeaux character whereas the Folly had more uplifted fruit character still.

    1/16/2021 4:03:00 AM - Dear mphatic
Thanks for your comments. I think the Folly 2006 is plateauing probably, but it will continue for years yet. They often need to reach a good age before being at their best, and do go through a dormant period after the first couple of years.
    Good luck with yours

Oops! I lost this one. Very smooth, quite jammy, length goes on forever. Have put it in the fridge to see how it is tomorrow. I’m sure it will be even better.

8/13/2020 2:57:00 AM - yes these wines are amazing in longevity and quite unexpected for their price point. I still have a handful of these and 2001 and the shiraz too

2014 Tyrrell's Sémillon Single Vineyard Belford

I love these wines when they are a little fuller mid palate than this wine at present, as they take me back to the richer Doug Elliot Belford of the 70’s. Pale straw in colour., and wet straw and lime juice on the nose but it is so undeveloped. More grassy on the palate with some lime zest and lemons on the finish. In an awkward phase right now. The vineyard and the vintage will shine, it just needs more time. If you have it leave it and try again in 2023 as looks like a slow developer.

Excellent, absolutely superb wine. 12.7% alc.
Tasted alongside a Tyrrell's Vat 47 2008, Pegasus Bay Virtuso 2013 (both of which Bradon brought), plus a recently acquired 2015 Stefano Lubiana from Tasmania. The Folly was possibly the best rated of the evening though they were all superb, and especially the Pegasus Bay.
Colour: very bright light golden
Bouquet: melon and peach, nutty oak vanilla, but all subtle. Very clean and fresh.
Palate: great fruit density, similar flavours to bouquet, apples and pears, fine grained tannins, creamy/buttery characters, but with stony minerality, quite rich, voluptuous and good body without being over the top, and all balanced by fantastic acid. Long clean fruit finish.

4/16/2017 6:02:00 AM - From an aging perspective, as asked by Chatters: the wine totally belies its age because of its freshness. It could be 3 years old, and would no doubt live many more years before developing some honeyed characters typical of aged Hunter whites

Excellent, 13.5% alc. Classic, aged release for 150th anniversary.
Colour: dark brick red, red berries
Bouquet: sour dark charred cherries, smokey, raspberries, vanilla oak
Palate: as bouquet, soft developed berry fruit, cedar, spice, earth and anise characters. Big soft fine grained tannins, complex with great length and balance. A very nice aged wine.
