2021 Margerum Grenache Santa Barbara County

more

Early to drink - some bubbles on first pour that dissipate after 10 minutes in the glass. Supremely aromatic, violets turned up to 11 on the nose. But also a bitter leafy streak on the palate that reminds me of Halcon Yorkville grenache, even though that terroir is Northern CA compared to Southern here. A+ and a new favorite, will be putting a few away and trying future vintages.

10/31/2023 4:35:00 PM - Thanks James, noted on the 2010 Ardanza! It's $195/bottle over here right now so I set an alert...will have to wait for it to come back to earth.

Rounding into form. Straight ahead fruit but with that calcareous streak that still conjures cherry cheesecake to me. No complaints; outsized value.

2018 Alvaro Palacios Priorat Finca Dofí

Grenache Blend, Grenache more

Longtime fan, first time caller for Dofi. Had wondered if upgrading from Palacios Vi de Vila and Les Terrasses would be worth it; I’d say yes. The same easy drinking and polished touch for a Priorat, which to me is uniquely Palacios, makes this immediately approachable Agree with prior note that cherries and strawberries dominate at first and give way to more spice, minerals and complexity at the finish. For me it is strawberry cheesecake meets Priorat twang. The kind of wine that will disappear on you once you open it.

5/6/2023 2:25:00 PM - Since mine is a 375ml bottle I won’t wait as long as I would with a larger bottle. I have 2 more and probably will open the first in the next couple years, and the second one around age 15, so 2033.

Ruby red. A strong nose heavy on the violets. Aggressive on the palate; the acidity is maybe a touch out of balance. Tannins present and subtle. I could drink this now but better wait a year. Can’t be beaten at this price.

    12/7/2022 2:17:00 PM - Good call @macaujames! I stashed a pair of 2019s, and was too late on 2018.
