Russian River Valley more

This is one of the more enjoyable wines I’ve had in a long time! Amazingly still very vibrant and pretty. Beautiful nose of strawberry, rhubarb, pine, hay, a little old barn, birds nest, and bay leaves. Great palate of sour cherry and menthol, great lively acidity and gentle velvety character. Feminine and suave but still plenty of body for it’s style. I guessed blind that is was an aged Russian River Pinot as is was unmistakable. Nice noble finish with a touch of dryness that caresses tatter than bites. Lovely and truly amazing. Thanks great one, excellent choice!

1986 Joseph Phelps Insignia

Napa Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more

Absolutely incredible, mind blowingly fascinating wine. Upon uncorking and taking a whiff from the bottle I knew this was going to be special. Hands down the best most complex and enticing nose I have ever encountered. Old world scents of leather, some Brett and barnyard, garrique, lilacs and violets, bird nest, pizzelle cookies, menthol, spearmint, sage, salty bean soup, mothballs, and bing cherry. Wine shows some bricking but is still amazingly lively and fresh, no stewed plummy cooked or tired flavors at all. Very vibrant and electric. The mouthfeel is extraordinary and it is still at 35 years old a huge wine, definitely full bodied, very nice fruit was present but the tertiary flavors were shining. Notes of sour cherry, strawberry rhubarb, cassis, white peppercorns, clove and a line of salinity like salt water taffy, and through the night the wine constantly evolved in the glass and out on weight, with vanilla and baking spice notes, licorice and bell pepper coming to the fore. Still has a nice long drying finish that has great grip yet silky polish as the tannin is beautifully integrated. We drank it over 5 hours with several other wines and this was head and shoulders above everything else we opened. Howard correctly pointed out that the Phelps “is a palate destroyer” and it was true… this wine was so big and mouth coating and packed full of intensity that next to it other wines just paled in comparison, but seriously $100 Cabs tasted almost watered down. What a delight and a privilege to enjoy an evidently perfectly cellared bottle as this example was drinking pristinely. A monumental wine and a true testament to what well aged California Cabernet based blends can become.

9/24/2021 6:06:00 AM - I agree whole heartedly with JOELENE. It went through so many metamorphosis in that 5 hours that is became almost unbearable to wait an hour between glasses to find out what it would become the next sip. The other wines we opened along side it that normally would have been pleasant were truly a disappointment. The price of $280.00 was a bargain. Would I do it again..?
    ABSOLUTELY!

Absolutely stunning old Brunello! At first nose of cat piss and horse manure, like an old moldy papaya an old diaper and bandaids. But the Brett blew off and transformed into red fruits and leather after an hour. So smooth and balanced. More red fruit and leather and lively acidity still with a long smooth cotton finish. Well integrated and refined. Gotta love how these Brunellos age... lovely wine. Hats off to Howard the Great for another amazing tasting!
