2001 Chateau Musar Blanc

Bekaa Valley White Blend more

1/4/2020 - SteveHyde wrote: flawed

Oxidized. All 3 bottles purchased at the estate in Lebanon were oxidized. Chateau storage is probably not great. Still, I won’t buy older Musar white anymore.

8/26/2022 12:57:00 PM - Thanks. I'm aware of the style, and am comfortable distinguishing between oxadative style and oxodized to the point it presents as flawed. This was the latter. I have had quite a few vintages of this wine, some more than 20 years old, and to my taste, it is not a wine that ages well much beyond 10 years, unlike the red Musar.

Purchased as an experiment, my expectations for this bottle were low. It looked to be in stellar condition. Fill level into the neck, capsule and label in good shape, color seemed fine. But this is an inexpensive wine, one I buy regularly and tend to consume within a few years of the vintage. It isn't made for long-term aging. I stood it up for several days before opening to let sediment settle.

Capsule was difficult to remove, suggesting perhaps there'd been some leakage. When I got it off, the cork was fully saturated, but the top was dry, and the seal looked good. Thinking the cork might be crumbly, I used an Ah So opener. As I tried to insert one of the prongs, the cork popped neatly into the bottle. Not an auspicious start.

The wine smelled maderized slightly, and the color was slightly muddy. With air, however, it became more ruby-garnet, with ample bricking at the edge. Though it was clearly 5-10 years past its prime, the wine had a faded elegance, with residual sweetness underneath a more loamy, bullion, and iron rust profile. It held up at this level (say, maybe 82-84 points) for the evening as we finished the bottle.

A worthwhile experiment - and I'd still like to try the 88. Good showing for an everyday quaffer some 24 years old.

Pleasant, but confirms my experience that the Musar whites are not nearly as long-lived as the reds. Bought at the estate and hand carried home, so provenance not an issue - though I question just how good the storage is in the massive cellars of the estate.

4/17/2020 9:15:00 AM - 1994 would be a stretch. But the 4 01s I bought at the estate were also all oxidized. Not good. The 07s are not going to improve. If I buy the white in the future, not sure I will, I will drink it within a couple of years.

Very well made by Vajra from a plot acquired from Baudana. Lovely sweet fruit, well-structured with fine tannins. Lively in the mouth. Will improve with more age, but fun to drink now.

Beautiful. Love this old vine Gamay. Rusticity done right. Grainy tannins, dark, dense fruit that shows very clear, perfect with roast duck.

My reactions to Scavino are always complicated. These are often fabulous wines, great structure, pure, clear fruit, depth, tannin, mouthfeel. But you have to take them for what they are. If I judged them again classic Barolo criteria, I'd be more critical. But they are great to drink. I thought about selling them off as my tastes changed toward the traditional, but I'm glad I didn't. Digging into them has given me a chance to appreciate them for what they are.

Beautiful Barolo, drinking close to peak now but with many more years ahead of it. Double decanted at 10 am for 8 pm dinner. Silky, plush, with resolved tannins and lovely fruit. Strong finish.

I had this at a tasting and bought a bottle. I didn’t like it at a party. Don’t know if it was my mood or what.

Quite lovely. No sense of where this wine is on its aging curve, but very good with Vietnamese food at Doi Moi in DC. Softer, very rich with light citrus and floral notes. Well balanced. Lovely mouthfeel. Clean finish. Not at all oxidized. Still has years ahead of it.

Wow. What a wine. I am not that familiar this producer, but the 82 riserva hit it out of the park. At peak. Resolved tannins, fabulous structure, clear, densely layered fruit. Dark plum color. Would add more of this to the cellar any time I could find well-stored bottles.

  • Comment posted by SteveHyde:

3/27/2017 5:43:00 PM - Yes, mature. At that age, bottle variation is to be expected, and I'd encourage you to open one soon to see how it shows. Even older Nebbiolo benefits from a little air time, so pulling the cork 6 hours before pouring might help.

Not easy to find these wines in the US. AG does not review them. He finds that they are not well made. I can't speak to the cellar conditions or winemaking, but the results are more interesting and impressive than I might have thought from AG's views of the wines. Too young and slow o'd for 4 hours, the wine is soft ruby in color, with a classic Barolo nose and profile: sour cherry, some spice mixed with earth and tobacco and tar. Needs a decade, and should improve with time.

The best bottle I've had yet. Quite something to think that a 10-year old Barbera is showing better now than it did 5 years ago. Sour cherry fruit, dense tannins, fabulous grip, but beautiful balance, as well. Great.

    5/24/2014 1:28:00 PM - Bob,
This is by far the best bottle I've had yet. In mag, you can easily give it another 2-5 years. It will hold for another decade even in 750s, but whether it will improve depends on your personal preferences. I enjoy it at this stage. No longer primary, but with fruit that is still very fresh. I should have 2 more in the cellar somewhere. I won't rush to open them, but see no reason to let them age too much more.

Kelly's TN and score are right on target. This may be a second wine, but it holds its own against many a first wine. Deep purple garnet, plush mouthfeel, lovely crushed black berry fruit with good backbone.

2/8/2013 7:06:00 PM - Ken, thanks for the note. Since mine seems to have been written almost 4 years ago, I'm not sure whether I just mistakenly identified the Caberlot as Il Carnasciale, or not. I know the wines well, have been to tiny mountaintop estate to taste with Bettina (if I am recalling the owner's name properly), and own most vintages of Caberlot from 97 - 2004. I pick up Il Carnasciale when I can, now drinking the 05, which I'm enjoying a lot.
