4/23/2024 - liber Likes this wine: 92 points

1st of 12, opened 80 minutes, perfect cork and level - pale yellow, youthful; flint, oyster shell, lemon and apple, notably mineral, complex, fresh and classy; lightish, long, persistent, v intense rather than concentrated, slightly sharp and angular, notable salinity, minerality and typicity for Clos, upside, 8+ years. At least F (17.5).

1st of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level - light yellow, leggy; orchard fruit, v ripe, touch of tropics, hint of Ramonet spearmint, relatively fresh, not particularly complex; med/full, ok length, quite broad and slightly coarse, not flabby but heading in that direction, may well tighten and focus with more bottle age though I worry about slight lack of energy to fruit, if so upside, 8+ years. For now VG (16).

10th of 12, pnp, perfect level, cork quarter stained, back on top form, marvellous black cherry, some liqueur, hint of black raspberry, very mineral as befits CdlR, complex, GC authority, some upside surprisingly, 12+ years. F+ (18).

2015 Caroline Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets

Chardonnay more

4/19/2024 - liber Likes this wine: 95 points

1st of 12, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level - very pale, leggy, young; very aromatic, orchard fruit, finely judged citric cut, marvellous chalky minerality so characteristic of Caillerets, notably complex; medium bodied, vv long, persistent and nuanced, fine balancing citric cut masking concentration and ripeness of vintage, almost Mosel like tension and nervosity, youthful but open for business, upside, 10+ years. VF (18.5).......outstanding and thanks to JonnyG for prompting me to pull a bottle!

1st of 36, opened 90 minutes then decanted 90 minutes, perfect cork and level - very dark ruby, quite transparent, youthful robe; more black plum than cassis, some mineral and smoke, quite dense and unlayered presenting more as a simple right banker; full, round and caressing, ok length, persistence and concentration, sweetish mid palate with hint of tannic structure on exit, but as yet too monolithic and simple and without the breed and layering I'd have expected, so I'm left confused, could go either way though I suspect it needs more time to come together properly so long as there really is proper tannic underpinning which I believe was just detectable, if so much upside, 30+ years. But for now a tentative F (17.5).

Last of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, fruit diminishing in this bottle with citric edge slightly on the sharp side, probable downside but no real rush. Just about F (17.5).

3rd of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, pulled from cellar to replace corked Canon 89, needed some waking up but second half of bottle was in line with previous notes, lovely, nuanced and long with proper 03 scale if not 02 transparency, upside, 15+ years. At least F+ (18)......this grower has dropped off radar undeservedly!

double decanted - little rim development, dark quite dense but glossy ruby; black plum and spice, some earth notes, simple and straightforward; fullish, ok length but little fruit, coarse tannic structure all too apparent, massive over-extraction based on this bottle, though other notes on this site suggest this bottle an outlier, though there was no obvious taint, no future, drink. At best G+ (15.5).........I originally bought this en primeur but was able to sell it back to the merchant having picked up that extraction might be an issue but have stuck by more recent vintages which I've enjoyed.

1st of 24, pnp, perfect cork and level - darkening bright gold; nicely spiced, honeyed fruit, some marmalade and butterscotch, fresh surprisingly and very complex; fullish, v long and persistent but much younger and apparently less concentrated than appearance would imply with palate some way behind nose, attractive balance, relatively early days and with much upside, 30+ years. VF (18.5)........I expected more and greater weight of fruit based on a couple of bottles I had in the noughties when it was massive and slightly OTT; currently I'd put this behind the 89 and 88.

2 bottles, both aged, brown appearance, living more on structure than fruit, one bottle with slight cork taint, the other fresher and showing some bright fruit but spoiled by tinny back taste (storeage?), both showing hard edge which I found regularly in Latricieres from 70s and 80s, but which I wouldn't have expected in a ripe vintage like 1990, no future here, drink up. G (15) better bottle.

double decanted, brown throughout, tired fruit, some structure, perfectly drinkable and a treat of course but objectively well past its best. G (15).....I had a Montrose 18 in late 80s which was remarkably fresh, nuanced and drinkable; my sense is that the vintage is much better than the books will tell you; at this age cellarage is all. it is of course the ladies' vintage with nearly all men in the trenches!!!

14th of 24, splash decanted, perfect cork and level, bright youthful robe, black fruit and mineral, more plum than cherry, round and expansive, unresolved tannin well covered on exit, some residual austerity as befits Corton to add to lightly polished feel, maturity plateau, 10+ years. 2nd of 12, opened 30 minutes, perfect cork and level, as first bottle on 7/3, a fine bottle of wine, beautifully balanced, if without the weight and authority of the best vintages though given its youth and scope for improvement, I would expect greater layering and dimension to develop over the next 3 to 5 years and for it to hold for a further 10. F+ (18).

4/4/2024 - liber Likes this wine: 92 points

7th of 12, opened an hour then decanted 45 minutes, perfect cork and level - youthful robe, purple rim on first pour, dense and glossy, attractive fruit driven bouquet and palate but decent complexity and length including Branaire's chocolate marker; however after an hour fruit suddenly diminished showing a fairly coarse tannin structure, balance and fruit seemed ok initially so I left confused by this and the marking reflects early impressions with final glass more like 89-90, upside I think, 11+ years? F (17.5).

2002 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds

Pinot Noir more

4/2/2024 - liber Likes this wine: 93 points

1st of 12, opened an hour then decanted 30 minutes, perfect cork and level - dark but transparent ruby, little development; cherry, touch of cranberry, slightly sour and mineral edge, pure, fresh and reasonably complex; medium bodied, long, notably persistent, bright fruit, fine balance and grip, slightly simple as yet with unresolved fine tannin apparent on exit, adolescent but drinking, much upside, 20+ years. F+ (18) for now........nice to get an Angerville wine that is actually a good drink as they take an age to come round often going in and out of sulky phases (eg 95, 98 and 99); the 03 is probably to be preferred for current drinking but I suspect this will have the edge when fully mature in say 10 years and the Lord only knows when the 05s will be ready!
