2020 Viña Peñalolén Cabernet Sauvignon

Maipo Valley more

1/13/2024 - Tim and Bonnie Likes this wine: 92 points

An interesting and intelligent wine. A muse in a glass. Carries notes of (forgive me while I overindulge myself) black cherry, dried blackberry, gooseberry, fruitwood smoke (a hint), cooked brown sugar, dried tangerine skin, red plum, mushroom, violet, pepper plant leaf, and later, eucalyptus and thyme.

It’s been a while since a wine has tempted me to analyze it, something I reserve for lush high quality wines or delicious high value wines. This it’s the latter of those.

2019 La Compagnie Rhodanienne Gigondas Bois de Menge

Red Rhone Blend more

On day one you root for this wine because it’s a Gigondas you found for $14.99 at Trader Joe’s and you want to brag to someone about the wine steal you found. You might even pull out the now non-cool term…duh, duh, duh…QPR. But, alas, as much as you try to convince yourself it’s engaging and deep, it’s only linear, monolithic. Although, it makes one crave pork or turkey, so serve it with anything with which you’d serve cranberry sauce on day one.

Day two however…

Well apparently it evolves! This wine now tastes and smells like none of the following but reminds me of them all.

First, an aroma that takes me to my childhood. It’s medicinal. Iodine? No. Mercurochrome? No. The green stuff you splotch on a wound with a sponge on a bottle like shoe polish, what was that, Campho Phenique? (Geeminee, I almost spelled it right! Google says it’s two words not one.) Maybe, Hydrogen peroxide? Mmm, nah. I’m going with Campho Phenique!

And then there’s a spice I relate to Mexican food, not cumin, not chili, but if cumin and chili and oregano and pitch and Campho Phenique had a baby…? And add some petroly, berry-kissed tangerine and I think that’s pretty close.

Would I purchase again? Yes, I think so, even if just to make myself think deeply about a wine.

Guessing this is more like a 13% ABV. When one imagines a 15% ABV wine, it connotates an entirely different drinking experience.

It’s not bad, it’s just…meh.

Hot, the alcohol is rough. They’re selling the bottle (heavy, deep punt, attractive label), not the wine.

Price point way too high at $19.99. One could explain how its surprisingly lightweight, citrusy taste would go well with chicken, but so will a $7 Chateau Saint Michelle Chard, so why spend more? Can think of many more wines below this price range, Juan Gil, for instance, that throw this one out at first base.

Very present fruit and tannins. Reminds me of Liberty School, but only because I had LS first. Could’ve been the other way around.

Pour 4 glasses in the first 15 minutes when it is somewhat interesting, or vacuum cork it and serve 3 days later when it will be much richer.

Folks, this is what wine is supposed to taste like! I’ve been very confused and even doubting myself as regards reviews for wines in the $100 range. They, for the most part, totally disappoint me; and so I write an honest review that rates those bottles much lower on the scorecard than most others, and I somehow feel a burden of guilt about doing so.

But this offering renews my joy of wine, and even though it is still expensive from the working man’s POV, it is worth the spend. Don’t pass on this, enjoy it alone with cerebral conversation or over a juicy piece of red meat.

Thanks to the vintner for their effort and dedication to producing a wine with both old and new world qualities. We appreciate you!

2010 Beaucanon Cabernet Franc Cuvée Louis

Napa Valley more

2/15/2019 - Tim and Bonnie Likes this wine: 95 points

This is, hands down, one of the best wine buys left in the United States. While most vineyards have mounted the profit horse, Beaucannon has done what you hope your children would do were they winemakers, and offered extravagantly beautiful wine for a reasonable price point.

These vintners, whom I’ve never met, made a decision of principal, and we must honor that. They had to forgo profit by holding the wine until it was ready to drink, in their estimation.

The greatest wines may always remain above the ability of common folk to experience, but the Beaucannons are working to change that. Integrity; that’s not what Beaucannon means in French, but it should.

Gee whiz, $90 on sale?

This wine tastes like a $29 cab not $90. Grieves me to say this because N&N produces some good wines, but buyer beware.

No bones to grow on; it may get better with age but it’s way down the chart in that regard.

Simply don’t understand the other reviews...maybe it’s me?

By point of comparison, and I’m 1) not a shareholder, and 2) risking driving up the price of a great QPR wine, try a Beaucannon Cabernet Franc and then taste this wine, and then tell me it’s 3x’s better.

Old world nose, which is a positive for us; supported by layers of reddish fruit. Not big and powerful, more delicate, although not weak.

If it evolves to the point where it touches the top of the palate, will rocket upwards.

Guessing the Spanish, who make, IMHO, some of the greatest wine in the world at the best value, send us this because frankly, we’re Americans. And we’ll buy it, and drink it, and not complain.

No one to blame but Commerce on this one. The destination is not worth the journey.

It doesn’t exhibit the sophistication of the other Suduirat’s I’ve experienced, it is actually totally different. Would categorize it as “crowd pleasing”.

PLEASE DON’T serve on day one, it will come off cheap, not inexpensive.

Pop it, vacuum cork it, then wait 2-3 days and taste again.

Chocolate richness ensues.

Judged on opening, 82. Judged after a few days opened, 90.

Shouldn’t have to treat a less expensive bottle in this manner to enjoy it, but would recommend you not hold the journey against the destination.

No doubt it seduces with fruit and power, it simply lacks finesse. If you desire a luscious bi-tone wine to enjoy without being distracted during a convo, a business meal perhaps, order this. Actually, I’d recommend this for a business meal...you’re likely to close the deal!

If you’d appreciate a bit of contemplation in your experience, try something a bit lighter with 4 or 5 tones to it.

Solid wine, and actually not overpriced. Just needs to be selected to meet the moment.

The 90 is concretely conjoined with its QPR. If it had a solid mid-palate, it would be priced at $30+. To be specific, it sits just above the tongue, and doesn’t touch the upper back roof of the mouth.

High octane and rough, but may just need time to round out. Let’s give it a year or two.

Although, if a weary, snow-covered soul were to stumble into your mountain cabin some winter’s eve, and you were fresh out of “the recipe“ with which to revive them, offer a glug of this and they will be tap dancing in front of the fire within moments.
