2006 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Le Corton

Corton Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

5/25/2014 - Average Wine Guy (MH) wrote: 90 points

The 2006 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Le Corton is medium ruby in colour with a nose of sweet juicy red currants, red berries, cranberry juice and a noticeable slight volatile acidity.

Soft and sweet red fruits enters the palate with a palate cleansing freshness. There's some stalkiness coming from the mid palate with an acidity that follows. Very clean in style though one may argue that a slight earthiness that follows after. The earthiness comes up particularly a little stronger towards the end. Medium finish, pretty enjoyable thought it might be a little tart.

Enjoyable 06 vintage wine. The wine though, transforms to a strange shut-down stage after 2 hours in the bottle. I'm certain it was just taking a quick nap.

The 2008 Château Poujeaux is medium garnet in colour with a slight ruby rim. Sweet sour cherries, black cherries, slight stalkiness and vanilla pods completes the bouquet.

On the palate, there's a sweet entry of black currants with a mid palate acidity that is pretty uplifting and slighting refreshing alongside some flavours of thyme. Medium structure, easy drinking but pretty straightforward in style. Pleasurable but nothing much to showcase in depth.

2002 Majella The Malleea

Coonawarra Cabernet-Shiraz Blend, Red Blend more

5/6/2014 - Average Wine Guy (MH) wrote: 90 points

The 2002 Majella The Malleea is dense garnet in colour with dusty plums on the nose alongside some herbs (thyme), cedar, vanilla pods and eucalyptus.

On the palate, the wine enters with purple and black currants and a mid-palate of woodiness that then progresses to some red sour prunes with some eucalyptus by the side. There's an attractive spectrum of flvaours on the rather broad palate. Tannins are very fine now and acidity is still well-present. Pretty balanced in style which definitely gives the wine its attractive nature. Finish is medium (-) in length, though one might argue it being a little tart and possibly drying out.

2011 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Champlots Blanc

4/17/2014 - Average Wine Guy (MH) wrote: 91 points

The 2011 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Champlots is medium (-) brilliant gold in color with very good vibrancy there. The wine boasts of a superb intense nose of creaminess, slight vanilla pods, green beans, winter melon with slight floral notes as well. A very integrated nose indeed that one might actually find it hard to 'break down' and 'tear apart'.

On the palate, an entry of crisp green apples welcomes one before a midpalate of nuttiness and creaminess that follows. Pretty structured in style but very firm without being harsh or in anyway unpleasant. A wine that sings its presence but not barging in. There's some slight pecan nutty notes as well with a medium (+) finish of good minerality and salinity. A finish that is almost salivating. Broad mid palate and pretty round as well before drawing back to a focused style with a fun play on the palate profile.

A pretty serious St. Aubin with definitely many years ahead.

The 2011 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet Les Ancegnières is medium gold in color with a nose of ripe stone fruits, overtones of pronounced nuttiness such as pecans and walnuts. There's a firm underlying salinity and minerality on the nose with a hint of back end sweet spice and oak.

On the palate, the wine enters the palate with pecan as well as some stone fruits coming up on the mid palate. There's a firm underlying acidity that really creates a good structure in the otherwise flabby wine. The salinity lasts a long while to the finish. Pleasing medium length finish. Brilliant style for a Village and is sure to beat even some 1er crus out there perhaps!

There's a good acidity that gives the wine a fresh finish instead of a lingering sweetness that might be too mouth coating. Nice medium (+) finish. High quality 5 puttonyos indeed.

The 2001 Château de Fuisse Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes is medium (+) gold in colour. Sweet roasted honey nose with pronounced nuttiness alongside dried apricots, beeswax and lemons.

The palate boast of sweet beeswax and dried apricots. There's some green apples showing from the mid-palate with some nuttiness from development. There's an underlying minerality perhaps, but rather weak. Flavours seem to be a tad bit tired, or perhaps the wine is shut. One might say its window is closing - hence, its now or never.

On the palate, the wine boasts of dark red fruits, dark cherries, backed up with a firm structure and underlying smokiness. There is a lot of elegance and style in this wine. Entering the palate expansively, bursting its flavours and coating the palate before drawing an end of laser like focus. It's firm acidity lies underneath its powerful fruit notes drives the wine on a memorable super long finish. Balance is key here, with lots of underlying character. Superb and definitely many years ahead.

I definitely have high hopes in this wine for its future ahead. (90+)

A Flight of 2005 CDPs: The 2005 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de mon Aïeul has to be the second runner up in the flight. Dark garnet in colour with a nose of kirsch, slight soy, liquorice, gentle smokiness and slightly chocolatey. The palate is slightly chocolatey and very mouth-coating.

An entry of fresh herbs which then moves on to dark currants and gentle smokiness. The acidity coming up a little towards the end. Quite expansive in style with a finish of pleasant spices. Very integrated and its balance is definitely commendable. A tad bit young today, but many, many years ahead on this one. Hold on if possible. Its structure proves longevity. (93+)

On the palate, the wine lies strongly on its herbaceous palate and is rather dark and smoky. Dark raisins persists alongside sour cherries. A bit of a barnyard finish. A tad bit of weight there, but the wine is rather 'all over the palate'. I'm not too sure if this can sustain and develop well in the years to come.

On the palate, the wine displays blackcurrant notes with dried rose petals before a mid-palate of peppery notes. Impeccable balance there. Very pleasant. Tannins are super fine with a medium (+) finish. Drank this wine over 6 hours and definitely did not lose any of its structure and style. Only gets better with time. Too young to drink today, and a lot more patience would reward those who wait. (92+)

Press Lunch with Puri Mancebo, Export Director of Vega Sicilia (Les Amis): The 2003 Oremus Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos is amber in colour with an intense nose of bright tangerines, nectarines, slight earl grey tea, sweet honey, dried mango skin and good marmalade that overlays.

A high viscosity entry of tangerine peels, dried mango skins, marmalade before a mid-palate of earl grey notes, honey and bee wax. This is not an everyday dessert wine with its impeccable focus. Acidity is the main star here, coming up at the mid-end palate to keep the wine absolutely fresh and light at the end. Powerful and dense upon entry, expands and flood the palate with flavours before a lighter and fresh medium (+) finish. The importance of acidity is once again emphasized here for its end-of-meal freshness. The 6 puttonyos delivers 228 grams per liter of residual sugar. Too many years ahead for this, though absolutely irresistibly already! 91+

Press Lunch with Puri Mancebo, Export Director of Vega Sicilia (Les Amis): The 2003 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único, Vega Sicilia's top label, is medium garnet in colour with a slight ruby rim. The nose tempts one with gentle red fruits, slight spice, but more floral and perfumed. In addition, one might also notice nuances of potpourri, some compact wet soil and pine nuts. An integrated and elaborated nose indeed.

On the palate, the wine has an exceptional elegant entry with great finesse, boasting of nice bright red fruits and a powerful structure. This moves on to some wood and noticeable pinenuts and some floral notes. Superb focus from the mid palate, long and seductive finish. Balance and elegance is definitely the key here in such an impressive wine.

Hours of decant is needed for this to come alive just a bit, but a fair judgement definitely can only be made in the decades ahead. 92+

Beautifully soft and round entry of gentle jammy red fruits with impeccable balance and structure. Soft but powerful in style, good drive to a lasting finish. A wine that one might frown upon just to pull apart the truly integrated flavours. Nice gentle woodiness coming up from the mid-palate with lovely underlying acidit that really delivers the wine on a memorable finish. Reminds one of a well-made Bordeaux, with a Spanish spin. Very young now, but given its structure and built, the wine definitely has many years ahead - and its secondary characteristics will definitely be a rewarding one for the patient drinkers. 91+
