My last of 6 bottles. The aromas are still lively and fresh, but the taste… the fruit is starting to fade a bit, leaving a more austere wine. I like these on the fresher side. Tanins are fully integrated, so to my taste I’d recommend drinking sooner rather than later, although that seems to go against popular opinion.

Not sure how to rate this, but I’m finding that I just don’t like Gruner Veltliner. I love olives and brine, just not in my wine.

A strange melange. Needs 45 minutes or so to open up. No distinct flavor notes that I could discern. Ok, but nothing special. I’ve had prior vintages of this that I much preferred.

4/12/2024 - Big Juicy Red Likes this wine: NR

Lovely nose, nice flavors (dark cherry notes, soft mossy earth, almost Burgundy-like tartness on the finish) but the intensity of both is just a little bit lacking for me. I would say it’s very good to excellent, but not fantastic.

I will note that the last glass (about 3 hours after opening) was the best, so give it plenty of air first. No signs of fruit fading though — this has a lot of life left yet.

Relaying a description from Full Pull:

"...Jim and Patty began working with their block of Weber fruit in 2005, and to this day the winery sources the exact same block, a 1983 block of Pommard-clone material, so 38 years old at harvest.

(from Jim): There simply aren’t many 35+ year old vineyards in Oregon. In our nearly 20 years of working with this vineyard, it has routinely produced one of our top wines of the vintage (certainly the 2012 and 2016 could make a strong argument for that being the case)… This wine has both the delicacy and fruitiness that this vintage has brought to bear in several vineyards. It is a naked wine, offering red fruits, an abundance of spice and a texture that is sublime and haunting. It is complete, age-worthy, unique all while still being a distinctly Worden Hill Rd Pinot Noir. Beautiful wine for old vine Dundee Hills vineyard fans.

(back to Full Pull): Yes indeed. The team harvested the top half of the block on September 22, followed by the bottom half three days later. This was a very small-berry year, so they entirely destemmed both lots – no whole-cluster material in the ’21. The wine was aged in French oak barrique, about 40% new, and listed alc is 13.0%. It kicks off with an expressive Dundee Hills nose: wild strawberry and pomegranate seed, forest floor undergrowth notes and lots of minerality. Just a gorgeous, deeply appetizing aromatic profile. And my goodness the palate. It’s pure and focused, suavely-textured and conveying wonderful depth and fruit impact married to a real sense of buoyancy."

Needs 3+ hours to fully open up, then flavors and alcohol are much better integrated. Before that, the 14.1 ABV was too noticeable for me. Also, the earthy notes come out to play then, leading to a fuller (although still big and on the rich side) wine. Certainly nice, but not my fave.

3/20/2024 - Big Juicy Red Likes this wine: NR

My last of 3 bottles, and by far my favorite. Now, finally, this is drinking like a proper Morgon. Lots of complex red and blue fruit notes, something spicy, even notes of toasted wheat bread on the nose. I largely agree with @WMCCONE54’s flavor description, although 5 - 8 years left may be pushing it. But there’s a complexity to both the aromas and the taste that were missing in prior bottles. Whether that’s a matter of time and evolution or bottle variation I can’t tell, but right now, tonight, this bottle is really excellent and drinking well above its price point.

2019 AVERÆN Pinot Noir Eola Springs Vineyard

Eola - Amity Hills more

3/16/2024 - Big Juicy Red Likes this wine: NR

Notes of cherry, black cherry, with some other rich underlying fruit. Unfortunately, the most noticeable aspect to me is the high alcohol (it’s 14.1%), which was immediately evident. The bite faded somewhat after an hour or so, but it’s still too “big” of a wine for my tastes. Some nice flavors, and it’s certainly enjoyable (certainly worth $30 from Garagiste back in 2022), but I wouldn’t pay much more for it. Not quite complex enough, or long enough of a finish. More of a brute force wine, rather than finesse.

I was tempted to say “Got wood?” and leave it at that, but that’s not entirely fair. For the first couple of hours there was a predominance of oak, but after a long while some fruit finally came out. What there was was dark and muted though. I’m not as thrilled by this as I used to be. Maybe it’s on the downswing?

No detailed tasting notes, but it was really delicious and drinking very well now. I seem to have gotten more sensitive to alcohol though, as the 14% bothered me more than it did with prior bottles (admittedly drunk several years ago).

Sadly, I don’t like this, or at least this bottle. Initially it had a strong medicinal taste and the 15 octane mowed me over like my grandmother in a strong wind. After an hour more earthy elements began to appear and it got a bit more interesting, but it still just tasted wrong. I won’t rate it, as I’m hoping it’s an off bottle.

Had side by side with 2019 Daniel Bouland Les Delys Morgon, which was preferred by all. This one had strong aromas of garlic bagel (which was mostly just weird). Taste was dark fruits, a bit of earth, and a lot of spice on the finish. Possibly this is still too young, but tannins we very noticeable and it just seemed a bit weird and out of balance overall. Probably won’t buy again, but I’ve got some 2018 still, which I’ll try just to make sure.

Aromas of dry earth and rich red fruits. Taste is congruent — rich red fruits, almost candied (I keep going back to fruit roll up, for lack of a better description) and lots of earth. Finishes long, with a hint of pepper and (sadly) some alcohol bite (it’s 14%). Full bodied, moderate plus complexity, moderate plus finish. A tad disjoined between the two flavor extremes. Hopefully it will settle down with additional age.

From Kiana:

WINEMAKING:
100% hand-picked into macrobins. Mechanically and optically sorted into 1.5 ton open-top stainless fermenters. Combination of twice-daily manual punchdowns and punchovers. Full ML in barrel, topped 6x per year. 40 months 46% new oak (37% French, 8% American, 1% Hungarian).

ESTATE VINEYARD COMPOSITION:
38% Kiona Estate
29% Artz Vineyard
19% Ranch at the End of the Road
8% Heart of the Hill
6% Sunset Bench

VARIETAL COMPOSITION:
86% Cabernet Sauvignon
8% Cabernet Franc
3% Merlot
3% Petit Verdot

VINTAGE NOTES:
The 2019 vintage on Red Mountain was similar to years prior, with heat accumulation coming in approximately 4% lower than 2018. Clear skies and a predictable summer resulted in a “by-the-book” ripening period. A relatively early frost created a bit of a crunch towards the end of the vintage.

My second of three bottles, the prior one being 12/2022. This one showed much better. The wine is now rich and fruity, with some meat overtones and notes of fresh earth. Excellent acidity, almost no tannins, and fruit still dry and slightly tart. Really delicious, and deserving of its 91+ point rating. An interesting contrast to the Crozes-Hermitage wines I’ve been drinking recently.

2011 Cantina Sociale Cooperativa Copertino Riserva

Negroamaro more

2/2/2024 - Big Juicy Red Likes this wine: 89 points

I know that in an absolute sense this is not an exceptional wine. I’ve had other Negroamaro’s with greater complexity and flavor delineation. But it’s a very good wine, and I loved it from the start. Back about four vintages ago, this was my first Negroamaro. I was mostly drinking new world wines then, but I loved this from the start. It was shockingly different, but something about it just grabbed me — that mix of fruit forwardness backed up by lots of Old World funk — and a great value. I guess I’m still emotionally attached to it.

At this point the flavors are rich, if ill defined, but it’s smooth, nicely balanced, and still has good acidity and just a hint of tannins to see it through the finish. I’m giving it a solid (and mostly rational) 89.

I don’t have much experience with IGT, but this was very nice. Notes of leather, a bit of fireplace, restrained dark fruit notes, and a long finish. Good complexity and balance. Tannins soft but still very present. Drinking very well right now, and likely still has a lot of life ahead of it.

From the producer: 50% merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 10% petit Verdot. 14% ABV.
