St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more

What a difference a day makes.

Day 1: opened and decanted for 2 hours. It was horrid. Musty, flat, no nose (other than mold), and no finish. Figured it was corked. Left overnight in the decanter to see what would happen...

Day 2: OMG. It's so good! The nose is still slightly musty, but the mouthfeel is terrific--secondary and tertiary--and there is a finish...a really nice finish. Thought it was a treat.

Have two more bottles and learned my lesson for them...

Graceful is the first word that comes to mind. Subtle floral notes. A fine finish but not long. Enjoyed but not blown away.

Drinking beautifully now — in a great window and won’t improve. Delicate nose with some floral components, which was a bit unexpected but very enjoyable. Excellent mouthfeel and a finish that lasted over 30 seconds. Glad I have one more bottle!

Liked this far more than I was expecting -- couldn't believe this was a 2001. It felt more like the 2005, although not close to the power of that vintage. I do worry, however, that we are at the peak. It was best after being open for about 1 1/2 hours, after some time in the decanter. We ended up closing the bottle with about 1/3 left, and returned to it two days later. At that time, it had faded substantially and little was left. Drink now and enjoy an underrated vintage of this wine -- and don't make the mistake I did by saving some of it for another night.

Drank from 375 ml. Definitely on the decline. Decanted for over an hour. Muted and our bottle had a ridiculous amount of sediment — was hard to believe it was only a ‘99. Still enjoyed but it is past its prime.

This still has a lot to give and doesn’t feel like it is on the downturn. Classic palette and a reasonably long finish. I’m going to look for more.

I agree with the other recent ratings. Needs time in the decanter to open up, and is certainly an enjoyable wine. But lacks depth and nuance. Nice notes of tar and pencil shavings. Only 12.5% alcohol but it still comes through a bit on the nose. Enjoyed and have one left, but not a showstopper.

Drank over two days. PnP - should have decanted. Was stiff and closed the first day, an average bottle...but wow, day two was a totally different experience. Richer, bolder nose, much longer finish, and a far better wine. With time this will continue to improve, but it is good drinking material now (but make sure to decant!)

Phenomenal. Best Haut-Bailly I’ve ever had. This is just entering a very long drinking window. I’m thankful I have another 5 bottles in the cellar, and I probably won’t touch the next one for at least 3-5 years. The finish on this beast goes on and on and on - over 60 seconds. Classic palate. I can’t wait to see how this evolves with more time.

1990 Château Lagrange (St. Julien)

Red Bordeaux Blend more

2/20/2021 - wstromb404 Likes this wine: 93 points

I’ve always loved Lagrange because although it is not a Leoville, it hits all the St. Julien notes consistently, and has an incredible price point for the quality. This was the oldest vintage I’ve had of Lagrange, and it did not disappoint. The 2-plus hours decant was a necessity, but the cork came out clean and the time opening up made it improve and improve. The nose is not memorable, but the palate is gritty - dark currants, pencil shavings, black pepper - with a fairly long finish. By the time we finished the bottle 3 1/2 hours after opening, it was peaking. I thoroughly enjoyed this wine.

Brilliant but still feels very young. I picked up a couple bottles in an auction last year and this is the first of the two. Will wait at least 5-10 years for the next. Intoxicating bouquet that reminds me of a cartoon where you see the fumes going into the character’s nostrils and their eyes perk up. Traditional flavors but a whopping finish - at least 45 seconds. Can’t wait to see how this evolves as it ages.

Cork came out totally clean - although very damp. And th funk and mustiness upon opening was overpowering. But with about two hours in the decanter everything settled and this was a great wine - pretty much all tertiary at this point but a decent finish and paired brilliantly with grilled sausage and bell peppers. Yum.

Was expecting more for this vintage. Feels a bit shut down, but maybe that’s just me expecting more. Traditional Bordeaux notes but fairly generic. Still very enjoyable and paired well with dinner, but this probably needs a few more years in the cellar. Not sure it will get much better in the end but it’s worth giving it more time.

Absolutely loved this wine. 3+ hour decant. The early fruitiness on the nose gave way to an earthier and smokier bouquet with the decant, and it opened up beautifully. Silky finish and notes of blackberry, tar, and leather, but oh so subtle. A great wine. Looking for more...

Really smooth, young Sonoma Pinot. Not too fruity, and has some earthiness to it, and will improve with some more aging. Recommended as it is a decent price point. Would get again in a heartbeat.

Beautiful wine. Decanted for 2+ hours. I’m normally a Left Bank guy - St. Julien and Pauillac - but this St. Emilion is wonderful. 30-45+ second finish. Feels young still - not sure why Cellar Tracker suggests a 2010-20 drinking window. That’s not right. This will develop much more in the coming years - give it another 4-5 years of cellaring and it will be incredible.

This one grew on me. And it’s a great value for a 95. Threw it into the decanter for a couple hours - which was necessary. Evolved a great deal with air and time. Ultimately the nose evolved from metallic, dark berry, and mossy to a caramel currant type of feel - great transition. The tannins became more rounded with time and it had a decent finish - not long at first but lingered in a sneaky way in the back of my mouth and throat. Started looking for more bottles while drinking! Good stuff.

St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more

6/6/2020 - wstromb404 Likes this wine: 94 points

What a way to enjoy a Saturday night. Picked up a bottle in an auction recently so figured - hey, we’re in the middle of a pandemic - why not enjoy the finer things. Very happy with my choice of wine, but should have managed the timing of drinking it better. Wine was gorgeous upon opening: beautiful bouquet of caramel, smoke, and currant, and a finish that lasted 30 seconds. But with time in the decanter, it actually lost some of the finish and got a bit too soft. If I had another bottle I would have started drinking after 20-30 minutes in the decanter, as opposed to 2 hours. Overall though - it was a gorgeous wine - a real treat. So, if you pop a bottle, don’t let it sit too long unless you want to lose the finish (not sure why you would). Drink now - it’s probably just a tad past peak - but still brilliant. Enjoy.

Decanted for a couple of hours and consumed over several hours with dinner and after dinner. Lovely fruit-forward nose of blackberry, moss, and leather that became earthier and less aromatic with more time and air. Earthy, rich flavor with a 10 second finish. Overall was expecting a bit more but still was a very nice bottle. Probably could benefit from 2-3 more years of cellaring.

Decanted for over two hours. Definitely needed it. Was musty and funky upon opening. But then opened up after the decant. Very nice nose. Black cherry, liquid smoke, leather. Classic Bordeaux flavors but not very long on the finish. Overall a good bargain and would drink again. Probably in its prime drinking window now.
