2007 Rodney Strong SymmetryAlexander Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more |
4/1/2011 - vanessa.langevin wrote: NRLots of Bordeaux character here with pepper, cassis and spice all over the place. The nose makes me think ribs with a smoky BBQ sauce. There is a sweet note on the palate with with lots of licorice, thyme and nice tannins. Definitely New World, but in a well done way. Not too sweet or over the top. Great length and lots of ageing potential. Very big. |

2007 Rodney Strong Pinot Noir Davis BynumRussian River Valley more |
4/1/2011 - vanessa.langevin wrote: NRMuch fruitier than their standard RRV Pinot Noir due to less time on lees and different selection of Pinot clones. Lots of strawberry, red cherry and some plum with notes of Worcestershire sauce and spices. Very fruit forward. I enjoyed this very much, but it must be noted that it was one of the last selections on a long day of tasting. The profile is very much something that would easily please a tired palate. |

4/1/2011 - vanessa.langevin wrote: NRLight soft red. Smoky bacon on the nose that comes from the 11 months it spends on lees, followed by red cherry pie with spices on the palate. Darker and more smoky than the Davis Bynum. |

4/1/2011 - vanessa.langevin wrote: NRPretty disappointing for this super vintage. Dark inky red. Big nose of dark fruit, smoke and spice. Big, bold body and tannins with a relatively complex palate. Black cherry pits, rosemary, cigar, mocha and spice. The tannins are rich, smooth and sweet. Surprisingly approachable for this type of superstar wine. Age-able but not for long considering the somewhat lacking acidity. At almost $250 a bottle (in Quebec) I would pass on this puppy. The 2007 Ornellaia, for my money, is waaaay better. |

2007 Tenuta Guado al Tasso (Antinori) Bolgheri SuperioreRed Bordeaux Blend more |
4/1/2011 - vanessa.langevin wrote: NRLike Yiannis below, I tasted this next to the 2006 Guado and really loved the Cab Franc substitution for the Syrah. The grape imparts a noticeably more violet color to the wine. The nose has lots of mineral and lead pencil aromas. The mouth is much warmer and fruitier with violets and cassis. Less weighty richness and much more elegance and sophistication than the old version. A definite improvement. |

4/1/2011 - vanessa.langevin wrote: NRDark ruby red. Smoky with lots of roasted green pepper and spice. Complex, meaty and big with more sweet fruit than a more traditional Italian. Still a nice balance between old and new school. Good special occasion crowd-pleaser (a high-powered business lunch maybe?) especially if you don't know everyone's wine tastes. Think hearty meat dishes like ossobuco or pappardelle with wild boar ragù. |

2008 Tenuta Guado al Tasso (Antinori) Bolgheri Il BruciatoRed Blend more |
4/1/2011 - vanessa.langevin wrote: NRInky ruby red color matches the nose that has lots of dark brooding smoky intensity. Notes of smoked meat, BBQ sauce and allspice drift out of the glass on a background of dried prunes and dark fruit. Good body and similar flavours on the palate with a nice balance of acidity, firm-ish tannins and fruit. Finish is medium and rich with no green aftertaste. |

4/1/2011 - vanessa.langevin wrote: NRLots of dark fruit and spice here. Prunes and dried Mission Figs on the nose with some notes of clove and nutmeg. On the palate the winemaker has succeeded in casting a balance between the more rustic, barnyard notes of traditional Aglianico wines and a sweeter more supple and approachable new world style. A good way to intro the grape to more New World drinkers. |

4/1/2011 - vanessa.langevin wrote: NRBright ruby red in the glass. Nose shows lots of red cherries with bits of mint, licorice and orange zest. The mouth has some good quality tannins with both grip and silky smoothness. Good combo of tart fruity/herbal Sangiovese with a touch of Merlot richness. |

2007 Château Castigno Saint-Chinian Secrets des DieuxRed Blend more |
4/1/2011 - vanessa.langevin wrote: NRLots of licorice, thyme and dark fruit (blackberries, black cherries) on the both the nose and palate. The mouth is a fine balance of fruit and quality tannins that give it some heft but stay true to its lighter, south-of-France style. Not overly assertive or intellectual, but still has something to contribute like any good dinner guest. Made for simple pieces of grilled relatively lean red meats. Lamb chops with thyme or filet mignon with rosemary and mustard perhaps? |

4/1/2011 - vanessa.langevin wrote: NRBright ruby red with pale violet tinges. Lots of pretty red fruit, plums, bright red cherries and raspberries with some hints of licorice and lavender. Very light and lively on the palate with some smooth tannins and medium body. Could be cooled and drunk on hot day in early summer. Not overly complex but highly enjoyable. |

4/1/2011 - vanessa.langevin wrote: NRPretty bright lemon color. Lots of gas fumes and sticky cooked yellow and white fruit on the nose. The mouth is full of cooked pear, orange flower, candied ginger and honey notes and the flavours seem to linger on forever. Good balance of sweetness and acidity with definite minerals on the finish. Almost haunting, I loved it. |

4/1/2011 - vanessa.langevin wrote: NRThis late-harvest is deceiving on the nose which leaves you with a very distinct impression of cat pee, orange peel and floral notes. Complex and almost fresh with nothing hinting at the sweetness to follow. The palate is full of white peaches and ripe pear with more flowers (lily of the valley, honeysuckle) and some nice minerality in the background. There is definitely some acidity missing to tie it all together. A little flat/flabby. Could still improve with age. |

4/1/2011 - vanessa.langevin wrote: NRVery light, almost clear yellow with green tinges. Nose comes off as being very sweet making you think overwhelmingly of honey. The high iron content of the vineyard's trademark soil is very apparent. Almost like sucking on a coin or set of keys. The mouth is off-dry and laden with sweet pear and fresh white flowers. Made me think of crisp white linens drying on a clothesline in the wind on a hot summer day. Fell a little flat in the acidity department leaving it slightly off-balance, but this is a crowd-pleaser. Really easy to drink, low-alcohol, and definitely not your typical Riesling. Perfect for a summer garden party or day by the pool. |

2007 Rodney Strong Chardonnay Reserve Russian River Valleymore |
4/1/2011 - vanessa.langevin wrote: NRTasted after Rodney Strong Chalk Hill Reserve 2008. Same bright gold in the glass, but a far more pronounced nose than the 2008. 2007 was overall rated as a much better and more consistent vintage and it is definitely visible here. The palate is made up of creamy lemon and peach notes, with hints of some green (lemongrass) and ginger spice. The finish is all toasty oak with lots of rich vanilla. The alcohol, once again, stands out as being a little too big for my white wine tastes (14.5%), but if you like your Chardonnay stamped with a California signature, this is a wine for you. |

4/1/2011 - vanessa.langevin wrote: NRTasted after the Sonoma County Chardonnay. Slightly deeper gold color with a much more intense nose. Lots of green banana, ripe apple and even a touch of coconut on the nose with similar tastes in the mouth. Not overly complex with a sweaty hot finish (14.4%). Notes of butterscotch and vanilla to smooth it all out. |

2008 Rodney Strong Chardonnay Sonoma Countymore |
4/1/2011 - vanessa.langevin wrote: NRLight gold in the glass. Nose is relatively muted (maybe too cold?) and all sticky pineapple and tropical fruit. A good hit of tart acidity hits you in the mouth preceding flavours of ripe golden apple, lemon and pineapple. Some yeast, butter and other oaky notes round out the finish, but the oak is relatively well integrated with only a touch of bitter green aftertaste. Overall I found this lacking some oomph and intensity of flavour. Somewhat disappointing. |

2009 Rodney Strong Sauvignon Blanc Charlotte's HomeSonoma County more |
4/1/2011 - vanessa.langevin wrote: NRVery pale straw color. An oaky, burnt popcorn on the nose makes you think they've overdone the malo with this, but only 10% of the wine is aged in French oak and undergoes malolactic fermentation. The results are noticeable on the palate that is much more fresh and alive with acidity then the nose suggests. Big notes of jalapeno and tart citrus are joined by more subtle hints of green grass. The mouthfeel is zippy and lively, but still has a certain amount of weight. Very different interpretation of Sauvignon Blanc. |

2/28/2011 - vanessa.langevin wrote: 90 pointsBeautiful deep ruby colour that extends all the way to the rim. Nose is of cherries, violets, licorice and hints of deep, dark chocolate. Fruit forward, but with nice acidity and some minerality keeping it from being anywhere close to jammy. Lovely texture and quality tannins give way to a nice lengthy finish. Beautiful and voluptuous, a nice balance between old-school and new-school. |

2/28/2011 - vanessa.langevin wrote: 88 points50/50 Cab/Merlot blend for this vintage. No Sangiovese at all. Dark inky red hues with violet tinges. Prunes, black cherries, licorice and touches of smoke and green pepper on the nose. On the palate the fruity Merlot fills hits you first with bright cherries and a silky rich texture. The Cab firms it up with some green austerity and tannic backbone keeping it balanced and far from flabby. Good concentration and complexity and frankly, delicious. Maybe just a little pricey. |

NV Sokol Blosser Evolution No. 9Oregon White Blend more |
2/13/2011 - vanessa.langevin wrote: 84 pointsThis 9-varietal Oregon blend (Pinot Gris, Muller-Thurgau, Riesling, Semillon, Muscat Canelli, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, and Sylvaner) starts with a very pretty, aromatic nose of sweet orchard fruit (apricots and pears) with just a touch of crisp pineapple , fresh white flowers (orange blossom), ginger and a touch of honey. On the palate it is just slightly off dry, with a silky texture that finishes on a refreshingly crisp note. Overall the wine is just complex enough to be interesting without being overly intellectual. This would be a perfect pairing for those tricky spicy Thai and Indonesian dishes, and it even stood up well to BBQ ribs and brussel sprouts with lardons. A very versatile little bottle. |
