2017 Sandhi Wines Chardonnay Bentrock

Sta. Rita Hills more

4/15/2023 - Big Juicy Red Likes this wine: 93 points

My last bottle (prior one was 9/2021). Acid is now fully integrated, and oak is largely unnoticeable. It’s still crisp but silky, multi-layered, and complex. Notes of lemon, lemon curd / meringue or some type of creamy lemon, and so much more that I can’t identity. This is a fabulous wine that’s great on its own or with food. Wish I had more.

Not sure where to begin here. This wine is delicious, with amazing complexity. It needed an hour plus in the glass before it really came together, and the flavors continued to grow and evolve throughout the evening. Broad and deep palate of blue and black fruits with just a hint of earth underlying it all.

2018 Whitcraft Winery Pinot Noir Kick-on Ranch

Santa Barbara County more

4/23/2023 - Big Juicy Red Likes this wine: 92 points

I largely agree with @Rawdealbuffy. Closer to deep pink than pale ruby in color, with notes of fresh strawberries, a bit of candied strawberry, and underlying notes of earth or mushrooms. Moderate plus complexity and finish. Lighter and easy drinking, but there's a lot going on here.

First, gotta love Drake & Chris. They're the only people I know who will be precise enough (and honest enough) to label a wine as 12.42% ABV.

Kick-On is my favorite of the Whitcraft pinots. To me, it has the best combination of funk / stewed mushrooms / forest floor (that I love) with a bit of fruit. This is my second vintage, and I think I like it better than the 2016 (although it's been a while since I had that).

The nose immediately screams pinot -- soft and fuzzy "funk". The taste leads with fresh and dried strawberry, followed immediately by pinot funk. After several hours (and most of the bottle), there's a hint of residual sweetness that comes across. Moderate plus to high complexity and finish, high acid, and almost no noticeable tannins.

This wine is absolutely delicious, and ready to drink now. It worked perfectly with a couple of pasta dishes we got carry out from a fancy Italian restaurant (one was wild mushrooms, the other buffalo mozzarella, tomato, cream, and chili flake).

2017 Anthill Farms Pinot Noir Comptche Ridge Vineyard

Mendocino County more

6/30/2023 - Big Juicy Red Likes this wine: 92 points

Really delicious, hampered IMHO only by a (perhaps) slight lack of flavor intensity. I bought a bunch of these on super sale and am loving them. Needs a good hour plus to open up, then soft and velvety mouth feel with a melange of flavors including wet earth, spice, savory notes, and maybe some red fruit and sour cherry. High acid, but not alcohol. Elegant, with good flavor distinctiveness, even though I can’t name them. Drinking very well right now.

50% Xarello, 25% Macabeu, 25% Parellada co-fermented primarily in stainless steel. Disgorged 12/2021. Needs 30 minutes to open up, then strong notes of limestone and chalk — basically very minerally — with some lemon and maybe Meyer lemon and other citrus flavors. Amazing complexity for $22 or so. Wonderful wine.

Drank my second of four bottles tonight, and it’s much improved from prior review. Flavors are now all balanced, although perhaps a bit muted. No detailed tasting notes, but it was quite delicious. Drink or hold.

This wine is SO delicious. It's complex, with a long finish. No detailed tasting notes, but the aromas and flavors kept evolving throughout the evening. It's really an amazing wine (and amazing value) for ~$35 -- I wish I had more of this vintage.

Spicy, with some pinot funk and good fruit. I only got moderate plus complexity and finish, but the 14.5 octane really holds it back for me. Pinot shouldn't be that high.

I have to respectfully disagree with @JClark6. Let it open up for an hour, and it shines. Red and blue fruits layer over earth and forest floor. Well integrated tannins, moderate alcohol, moderate plus complexity and finish. For under $40 on sale or special deal, this is a very nice wine, and drinking beautifully right now.

Certainly a nice wine, but I don’t get the effusive praise some critics have given this. Maybe it just needs more time?

Flavors more savory than fruit, but I’m having a hard time breaking it down. Large grained tannins, and I’m not seeing a ton of complexity here. Maybe I’m just missing something.

7/10/2022 - Big Juicy Red Likes this wine: 90 points

This is my third vintage of Reverdon, and I love it. Bright, fresh, and easy drinking. This is the epitome of summer to me. Works great with Margherita pizza plus corn on cob, or salad, or almost anything else. It’s one of my favorite Beaujolais.

Personally, I like it bright and fresh. I just got a few bottles of the 2017 vintage, and they’re nice but much more Burgundian—a little darker, a little heavier, and not as fresh. I’d recommend drinking these within a year or two.

5/18/2023 - Big Juicy Red Likes this wine: 89 points

Also a $13 FP deal, and it absolutely is a deal. This is my first Array wine. Very spicy and a richness that comes with age. Yes, the acidity is fading somewhat, but it’s still interesting (very spicy for a chard) and has a lot going on. Worked well with Thai curry. I’ve also got some 2013 Nina’s Reserve that I’m now anxious to try.

12/25/2023 - Big Juicy Red Likes this wine: 89 points

Needs 90 minutes or so to open up. Good acidity, moderate plus intensity fruit flavors, some oak and soft but still slightly gnarly tannins. Pretty good Chianti (this is much more drinkable now than my previous bottle a year or so ago), but still a little thin in the middle and not much finish. I kept wanting it to be just a notch better than it is. May continue to improve with additional age though.

2011 Cantina Sociale Cooperativa Copertino Riserva

Negroamaro more

2/2/2024 - Big Juicy Red Likes this wine: 89 points

I know that in an absolute sense this is not an exceptional wine. I’ve had other Negroamaro’s with greater complexity and flavor delineation. But it’s a very good wine, and I loved it from the start. Back about four vintages ago, this was my first Negroamaro. I was mostly drinking new world wines then, but I loved this from the start. It was shockingly different, but something about it just grabbed me — that mix of fruit forwardness backed up by lots of Old World funk — and a great value. I guess I’m still emotionally attached to it.

At this point the flavors are rich, if ill defined, but it’s smooth, nicely balanced, and still has good acidity and just a hint of tannins to see it through the finish. I’m giving it a solid (and mostly rational) 89.

Nice moderate intensity aromas with a bit of pinot funk, but that didn't really carry through to the taste. It was more fruit driven, but dark and more extracted fruits -- dried blackberry, dried cherry, etc. Over all it was a bit too 'fruit juicy' to me. Not my style. No wonder it's on sale everywhere (retail, LastBottle, etc.).

Wine is slightly cloudy. Color is pale purple with hints of rust.
Nose is moderate intensity, maybe black cherry and pomegranate with a hint of something herbaceous (green bell pepper?).

There’s a hint of effervescence to the taste. Lots of tart cherry and blackberry or black cherry notes, but with no noticeable tannins it glides every so lightly over my tongue. Light to moderate body, moderate complexity, high acid, and moderate alcohol (just looked — it’s 12%, so more like moderate minus to low).

Overall it’s quite enjoyable, if slightly atypical. I got it on close out for about $20, so very happy with it.

On the bigger, heavier side. Only 13.9 ABV, but seems higher. Not super complex, nor great flavor intensity. Ok for the deal I got, but probably wouldn’t buy again at current (higher) prices.

Somewhat surprisingly this needs 30 - 60 minutes to fully open up. Nose of lemon with a hint of grapefruit and fresh cut grass. The taste is congruent, with a bit of peach atop a salty/mineral-laiden core. High acid, good structure with bright, fresh, clean flavors. Moderate complexity and moderate plus finish.

This is a really nice wine with clean, crisp flavors. It can be drunk on its own, but excels with food. I suspect that, like pinot noir, it would pair with just about anything. I had it with Mexican flautas (before switching to a Rioja) and it worked well.
