2007 Citille di Sopra Rosso di Toscana IGT

Red Blend more

I am lucky enough to have visited Montalcino in Northern Italy. The bottle I drank is actually a "Rosso di Montalcino", not "Rosso di Toscana". It is their plain table wine, which is of great quality. Like the food in Italy, it is its simplicity that makes it so special. Of course, I am comparing it to others in its price range. If you are not expecting too much, and are looking just for a pretty decent wine for a regular dinner, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Red cherry, mixed with darker plum along with spices, tobacco and earth notes on the nose. Medium bodied (14.5% ABV) with bright red cherry upfront, gaining density as well as darker, more complex fruit notes through the mid-body. Good structure on the backside, but it's neatly joined with the fruit through the middle so they work together quite well. The longer it's open the more it deepened and the more the fruit overall moved to the blackfruit end of the spectrum. The tannin-based structure is such that this should be held for at least another 2-3 years. But after about two hours open, the complexity and depth of the fruit and the balance this wine already possesses suggests it will be well worth the wait. (Ristorante Virginiae; Rome, Italy)

This is nicely evolved but I don’t think it will change any more. It is in a wonderful place and even better on the second day. Lovely lush mouth feel with dark fruit and a little leather. Wish I had more. I really love the 2010 brunellos and this does not disappoint.

Tasted at Zachy's. Nice but controlled tannins with beautiful fruit. Some earthy flavors with long finish. Plenty of acidity to make it very age worthy. Give it about 3 -5 years and will last many years beyond.

Prior bottle was almost 2 years to-the-day and this wine has evolved along the lines I'd hoped. Plum, black cherry, floral and spice notes on the nose with just a touch of black raspberry. Between medium and full bodied with black cherry upfront showing good expression and a nice touch of brightness as well. Mid-body adds darker black cherry as well as plum. There good density as well as good depth through the middle. Tart black cherry, acidity and tannins as well as spices, earth and mineral notes through the finish. Did take some time to open up and while it showed well throughout, it didn't show it's best until 3+ hours open when the balance and integration both took a step forward. Should continue to evolve along these lines as has a good amount of upside, so I'll wait until at least Q4 2024 for my next bottle.

Garnet color. Stunning bouquet of cherry, cherry licorice (anise), and sweet spices, all expanded by echoes and overtones. The arrangement brings integrated, smooth tannins of magnificent breadth, that join together with mouth-watering bitter chocolate in an impressive finish. A palate that expresses all of the architectural edges of pure, unblended sangiovese. Sublime.

Dark plum/black cherry color, polished finish, watery rim

Plum, black cherry, black licorice, eucalyptus, hint of vanilla with a little citrus way in the background - very focused nose but signaling a little heat

Dark berries, mocha and dark chocolate, espresso on the finish, with some dark mineralogy. Viscous mouthfeel, characteristic bitter orange rind appears on the finish after an hour of air.

Big wine, plays well with a bolognese - the interplay with the sweet carrots, shallots and fat is outstanding. 15% alcohol is noticeable. I would pair with a grilled veal chop.

Additional note: I vacuum sealed and refrigerated for 2 days and then drank. The heat had softened and was outstanding with a grilled steak.

Red fruits, brown sugar, earthy, leather notes. Structured with strong but smooth tannins.
Wine appear almost too sugary at first - nice acidity to balance it out

Aromas and flavors of dried sour cherry, subtle earth, and some garden herb. Medium body with decent acidity. A decent wine, just not all that exciting. Does pair very well with penne and sausage in marinara.

Decanter for 2.5 hours. Aromas of dark cherry and a little sweet earth. Medium body. Hugely intense flavors of sour cherry and a bit of toasted oak. Balanced acidity and fruit. Sweet gripping tannins. Old world all the way, total food wine.

I can't imagine a wine drinker not liking this. It is so easy to guzzle. Some red fruits, maybe cherry. It has absolutely no typicity, there is no brunello here. But then, not every wine has to be a slave to that. It actually reminded me more of an argentine malbec or napa cab. JuSt a nice smooth tasty bottle of fermented grape juice.

I've been sipping on this for 3 hrs & it gets better wt some time. It's elegant by the 3 hr wt deep cherry front & licorice on finish. Could spend lots if time sitting, but if you are willing to decant for 2-3 hrs....superb.

This took three hours in the decanter to open up. Moderately dark in color for Brunello. Leather, black fruit flavors. Traditional style. Good, just not exceptional.

Dark ruby color. Not a particularly nose, but some subtle earth and leather notes. Cherry notes, soft palate, but lacks complexity. Some suspended sediment towards end of bottle.

This was a medium weight Brunello with moderate acidity. I drank this over two days and found it slightly improved on day 2. A very nice Sangiovese that went well with pizza.

Because we read prior reviews, and thought it might need a long decanting, we ran it for three minutes in the iFAVINE (3 hours).

The wine is crimson colored with slight browning on the edges. The legs are heavy and slow. There is no sediment in the bottle. The nose was very muted, but smelled like black currant (cassis) and cherry kool-aid. It tastes like orange, black currant (cassis), blueberry, cherry, clove, rose-hips and a bit of a hot finish. The body is medium/light. The wine has angular texture. The wine has a medium finish and medium/ high acidity.

The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry. The body is medium. The wine finishes short. The wine has low acidity.

I was not impressed when I first tasted this wine however after letting it open up and breath, its flavors really came through. It really mellowed and changed my impression of my original tasting. Next bottle I will let it breath a while before drinking.

Lightly toasted cranberry color. Rhubarb pie, leather, and earth nose. Medium bodied, plums, crushed cherries, baking spices, dusty tannins, good acid, cedar, a bit of heat, and a long finish. A really good sipper.

Decanted for 45 mins. Light to medium ruby color with some bricking around the edges. Nose of black cherry, roasted plum, a bit of cedar cigar box, floral notes and some sweet oak spice. Slightly warm on the nose but not overly so. Mostly dark red fruit driven flavors on the palate with a mix of sweet and savory flavors and warm oak notes on the finish. Medium+ acid and tannins with a juicy mouthfeel and dry finish. This wine showed much better than expected based on some other notes but this drank really well on its own and even better with a meat based tomato sauce.
