6/10/2011 - BurgAndy wrote: 89 pointsClassic Volnay Santenots. Aromas of red and black fruits, stones, subtle cinnamon notes. Soft on the palate, with nice sap and extract; black stone fruits dominate. Tannins are soft for the vintage. Drinking nicely now with little to no benefit with extended cellaring which may be secondary to its enhanced maturation in this format. |

8/30/2011 - Rob and Meg wrote: 85 pointsThe nose shows elements of honeyed pear/apple and caramelized lemon peel, as well as an interesting undertone of dried cherry. The oak is slightly present but well integrated within the aromatics. The palate comes across as somewhat dilute initial, with tones of orchard fruit, honeydew melon, and cucumber. The mid-palate gains momentum with focused lemon/lime zest that continue onto a persistent finish of arising fresh mushrooms, woodiness, and a mild alcohol spike. The wine has average structure, but is salvaged somewhat by good mid-palate weight. This is a nice chardonnay, but suffers from slightly out of balance structure and flavor. R&M 85 |

4/14/2008 - IlonaN wrote: 89 pointsThis wine really sang with a first course of coquilles st. Jacques, bringing out the buttery richness in both the wine and the food. Tropical flavors, with a velvety texture, integrated oak and adequate but not brisk acidity. Definitely a wine to go with rich seafood and cheeses. Much better than the last bottle, which we drank without food. |

4/25/2009 - sleepyhaus wrote: NRWorst bottle yet. Either the wine has shut down, which seems quite possible looking at the arc of my scores, or else it has peaked and run its course. Only time will tell as I'll let that last bottle sit a few years, along with my last '02, to revisit someday and see if I was right to drink them all so young, or an absolute fool. |

9/20/2008 - sleepyhaus wrote: NRThe most tired showing yet of this wine. Dumb phase? Dumb bottle? The fruit of the attack and the acidity of the finish seemed disjointed, leaving the fruit seeming heavy and flat and the acid seeming overly aggressive after that. Still a nice bouquet. Perhaps we'll hold off for a while to finish. |

5/14/2008 - sleepyhaus wrote: 91 pointsJust really wonderful wine. Still way too young to drink. If I am smart I will hold the rest for at least a year. Nose is less floral this time, more complex, pinot funk, leather and earth, palate takes some time to open, really nice, just slightly sweet, red berry. Acidity to carry the flavors but no unpleasant tartness which for me is a major plus. This should drink well for five to ten if stored properly. My task is going to be to find some good '99 to hold me over, then drink these, then the '02, leaving me drinking the '05 about ten years from now (my premier crus generally) |

4/26/2008 - sleepyhaus wrote: 91 pointsI need to keep my hands off this now to see where it goes from here. Popped and poured and the nose on this burg was AMAZING. My wife said it smelled like a rose garden. I don't pick a specific flower, but it smelled like crushed flowers and fruit syrup. Flavors tended towards raspberry and blackberry, just a bit liquer like and maybe a hint of blueberry. The palate was a bit muted but that could have been me off a bit too. That is the only thing holding the score back because surprising as it may be for this wine the nose was astronomical. If the flavor profile ever wakes up to where that nose is this will push 93 or 94, which is far more than I expected from this wine. But then, Volnay Santenots is always one of my favorites |

4/13/2008 - sleepyhaus wrote: 90 pointsI drank a bottle of this one night after the first. I had no intention of doing so, but after opening a horrid chilean cab and a cooked CDP I needed something that I knew would be nice, and it was. May be better even than the score I gave, but a that point my palate had been through the ringer, so the overall impression was of good pure fruit and hints of spice. Recommended |

4/12/2008 - sleepyhaus wrote: 91 pointsVery nice. Very, very nice. Really drinking about ninety but with an upside potential of 92. The fruit is as lush as would be expected for '03, but the aromatics are surprisingly complex. Really nice burg and represents a nice value too. Fruit reaches a depth that will please California Pinot lovers to no end, but with Burgundian spice, nice structure, and compelling depth. I was pleasantly surprised. It is hard to say where this will go, but development while open gives the impression that improvement will continue for several years. Short decant advised for immediate consumption. |
