Mörkt rött, härlig doft. Djupa, fyliiga smaker med kännbara tanniner i eftersmaken.

It's so fun to have zero or even low expectations for a wine you've been holding, only to learn it's a beauty. Such a drinkable expression of sangio & barbera from a winemaker in South Africa. Aging like Jennifer Aniston, and reminding me that the surprises are the things I love most about wine.

Herbaceous blackberry scent; more Cabernet-like on entry (if you try really hard you can imagine blackcurrant, but that degree of mental concentration makes the rubber and smoke components harder to bear). Tannic, crabby finish. Excessively alcoholic at 14,5%. Acceptable value at €4,99 / 75cl retail. 81P

Pale gold to medium straw colour. Very clear, unoxidised look. Nose has light green gooseberry, herb character and light lemon and grapefruit peel. Nose replicated in the taste, adding gravelly minerality, light nuttiness rounded by a very light creamy touch. Light body, high acid, slightly oily mouthfeel, long finish. Excellent and probably still developing.

Smokey, gamey and chewy. A fine example of South African Pinotage; head and shoulders above the gimmicky coffee or chocolate pinotages often found on the market. Match with cured meat, venison or duck

Refined enough, well extracted, possibly built to last. Must buy 1 more for long haul testing. Cost is so small and potential award is sooo alluring :-)

I'm always more of a red fan than a white fan, so I can get quickly bored with Chardonnay and even tire of Marlborough sauv blanc by the end of the hot summer. So, I figured I'd try something... different (if not weird). Boy am I glad I did. What a bouquet! What flavor! WHAT VALUE! The nose is terrific, lemongrass and a tart sweetness. The taste matches, lemon and peach with green grassy notes, just glides down the tongue. This will definitely be chilling in my fridge all summer, which will be an easy investment as well considering the price point!

Rated 5 stars in Platter's 2009 edition. Finely blends 8 separately vinified varieties, some oaked. Sauvignon Blanc (40%: Chardonnay 20%: Viognier 15%) dominates with subtle tinned pea notes, but seamless, harmonious. Silkily elegant, with rare sense of completeness. Should mature good few years.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The wine shows dark, very slightly translucent black cherry color with almost inky viscosity to it. The nose is heavily dominated by aromas of blackcurrants, blackcurrant jam and oaky milk chocolate tones with subtle nuances of fresh, brambly dark berries and herbal minty hints adding some welcome complexity. The wine feels quite dry, robust and muscular on the palate with heavily oak-driven flavors of woody bitterness, cocoa, toasty spice, fresh dark berries, some sweet blackcurrant jam character and a hint of vanilla. The wine is quite structured with moderately high acidity and firm medium tannins, whereas the alcohol makes the mouthfeel quite warm, almost hot. The finish is long, rich and powerful with a little bit of tannic grip and bold flavors of mint, ripe blackcurrants, toasty spices, some vanilla-driven whisky oak and a hint of blackberry jam.

Ugh. A textbook example of overdone new world faux-Bordeaux. No matter how high-quality fruit the wine is made from, you'll never taste it underneath the thick layers of new, toasty oak. The fresh acid structure suggests that there is some balance to the wine, but I heavily doubt that the wine will survive long enough to see this much oak get integrated with the fruit. This much jammy fruit and obfuscating oak makes the wine rather ponderous and quite unpleasant to drink. Pass.

Complex with Gooseberries, Ripe pineapples, hint of honey, asparagus and green grass as well as perfume on the nose. One of the most interesting noses around - you can spend an evening with it and it changes all the time. Taste: Lime, Toast, well balanced - did defenitly age well.

2012 Nederburg Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Edelrood

Western Cape Red Bordeaux Blend more

10/23/2014 - forceberry wrote: 77 points

Aged for 12 months in oak barrels.

Moderately translucent cherry red color. Rather simple and one-dimensional nose with aromas of ripe blackcurrants, juicy red fruits and raspberry jam, some toasty oak, a little bit of ground green peppercorns and a hint of earthy spice. The wine feels ripe, soft and somewhat sweet-toned with flavors of almost jammy red fruits, some plummy fruit, a little bit of spicy, peppery bitterness, light vanilla oak, hints of raspberry candies and quite noticeable alcohol heat. The wine is lacking structure quite a bit with its modest acidity and mellow tannins. The finish is warm, medium in length and somewhat lacking form and shape with vague, ripe flavors of dark berries, some jammy red fruits and a hint of spicy, peppery bitterness.

A very soft, simple and boring wine lacking structure and sense of place. On the upside, the wine seems to be lacking that smoky character the previous vintages of Edelrood seemed to suffer. However, on the downside, this wine shows a lot less deoth and character as well. A dull and pointless wine. Bleh.

Chenin blanc (48%), Riesling (18%) and Muscat de Frontignan (30%) with a few percent of other varieties
Coppery gold this was extremely unctuous and sweet, tasting of raisins but without any redeeming acidity. Out of condition but while the other sample was fresher it still cloyed. CHP 81pts

Medium+ amber color.

Fully developed nose with a medium+ intensity. Lots of almond paste, dried tropical fruits, dill, caramelized nuts, spice box and whipped cream.

Fully sweet on the palate with a medium acidity and medium+ body. The flavor intensity is medium+ with almond paste, dried tropical fruits, baked lemons and butterscotch. The finish is medium+.

Very mature and was probably better for a couple of years ago. Good QPR though.

Further to my Note of Sept. 21, '21: This continues to please as an everyday SA CB, although she notes that it seems to be fading more after 24h. If that's true, it's minor in my opinion. This wine has changed my thinking about SA CB--now one of my favorites for everyday white.

Further to my Note of March 12 '21: This is #5, but I bought 3 more because of the QPR. This continues to please. Mature gold color but nose and flavor are rich and satisfying, and it holds at least 24h. Good complement to poultry dishes (we had grilled duck breast), light-sauce pastas, and oily fish. Expect to carry on for at least 1-2 years.

Bought a 6b case for 5/b from a local independent eclectic shop; this is #2. Medium gold; honeysuckle, some peach; white stone fruits, honeysuckle, some honey, good mouthfeel; some persistence. Delicious with plenty of life left. Glad to have more, no hurry. Stored vertically (screwcap) in a cool, dark basement since purchase. My evaluation (see earlier posts for my 4-category, non-point rating system): This is notable+ when considering quality, age, and price.
