Weekly tasting group #212; GSM: Blend or mono cepage? (@ The factory by JdB): Beautiful and complex bouquet with dark and red berries, garrigue, minerals and some pleasant rustic flavors which disappear after a while. On the palate beautiful fruits, herbs and spices, some earth, minerals, a great balance between acidity and sweetness and mild tannin with still a firm bite. This is a real beauty already, but in fact it is still much too young. Probably wise to wait until 2020 at least and it will probably drink lovely until at least the second half of the next decade. Great pleasure!

Bordeaux: Second wines in great vintages. (Valuas): This is my 20,000th Tasting Note in Cellartracker and that should be a special wine. A few weeks ago I tasted this wine (with 100 Parker points) again, and it is really great! I have a few and many users of Cellartracker have it as well, so that is why I saved this tasting note to be my 20,000th. In the bouquet beautiful cassis, cedar, smoke and luxurious oak. On the palate enormously concentrated black berry fruits with a beautiful harmony between acidity and sweetness. Soft but powerful tannin. This is a true beauty and will probably last for at least another 30+ years. 98+

Monthly Tasting Group HWS; Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape (By VD and @ VD): Ripe cherries and berries as well as herbs and spices in the bouquet. On the palate warm fruits like ripe cherries and raspberries, some licorice and dark olives, good acidity and slightly sticky tannin and a good length. The wine is a bit more sweet than the 2014. It surprised me, but in this stage I liked the 2014 a bit more than this 2015.

An easy afternoon with close friends. (By BV @ PdV): Very beautiful and complex bouquet with smoke, vanilla, a touch of barnyard and graphite. Same on the palate, luxurious, a pleasant touch of sweetness, ripe and juicy dark berries, beautiful acidity and round tannin. Silky and lush, very complete wine and still in its young maturity stage. So happy I have a few more.. 94++

An easy afternoon with close friends. (@ My place): Beautiful, luxurious bouquet with vanilla, oak and beautiful rustic impressions. On the palate mainly dark berries and good cherries, ripe fruits, also a firm but good dose of oak and vanilla, tobacco, juicy acidity and firm tannin which has a touch of green bell pepper. Good length. Most of the group thought today was a very good drinking moment and that the wine is in its young maturity stage. Personally I think the wine will develop for the better over the next 5 - 10+ years and show even more complexity and refinement. Overall a beautiful wine with great potential. 93 - 95+

In the complex bouquet good fruits, horse stable, some minerals and metal and good garrigue. (During this evening I noticed/learned that metal impressions show in the youthful wines, but makes place for beautiful wine impressions with some more ageing.) On the palate sweet and juicy dark forest fruits, beautiful herbs and spices , beautiful acidity and round tannin with a good bite. Overall a very harmonious wine with a beautiful balance between sweetness and acidity. Already a great pleasure and a leftover was two days later still great! Probably wise to wait until 2020 at least. Great wine and I will add a point for future expectations. 95 - 96

Weekly tasting group #058; Bordeaux left bank 2001, 2002 and 2003. (@ VD): This is one comparative note for the 2001, 2002 and 2003. In color the 2001 is the most transparent and the 2003 the most dark. In the bouquet all three vintages are almost the same. Very classical with cassis and other dark forest fruits, graphite (lead pencil) and luxurious oak with a beautiful toast. On the palate the 2001 shows good dark fruits, smoke, sweet spices, some chocolate and beautiful oak. Also a beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness and soft tannin. All mentioned for the 2001 also goes for the 2002, but there is a little more extraction. Also more creaminess, coffee and finesse. The 2003 is a category of its own. Enormously concentrated, luxurious cedar, sweet spices, chocolate and intense luxurious juice, finesse and complexity. All three wines will improve with some more ageing. The 2001 will probably be at its best between 2016 and 2018. The 2002 between 2017 and 2020 and the 2003 between 2019 and 2025+. Wihout any doubt the best flight of the evening and I scored the wines as follows: 2001 - 91. 2002 - 92 and 2003 - 95+

A great wine in a beautiful drinking stage and the wine probably still has 6 - 9 years of great future ahead. 96+

Regular dinner group (@ My place): Special company, I have a few and I was so curious, so why not open a bottle…. Well, it was NOT a disappointment. So young, so lush, a lot of cassis, cedar, exclusive oak. So concentrated. Soft but powerful tannin. Beautiful balance between acidity and some pleasant sweetness. Hard to not score this 99 or 100 for the moment. But it is so beautiful and will show even more elegance and complexity after some years. I will not give any advice when to open it, because this might be a superb beauty from now until 2035 or even later. 98++ for now is the most correct score I think.

On the palate a juicy wine with beautiful acidity, chocolate, coffee and leather. A bit drying tannin and a good length. We drank the 2006 beside it and this 2010 gave a more mature appearance, but no doubt the tannin promises some more years. Delicious wine.

I am not going to score this wine. It was so a-typical. The bottle had been tasted earlier with the Coravin and I don’t know if this has influenced the development of the wine. The wine had a very ripe and sweet bouquet with red berries and impressions of cocoa and oak. On the palate some sweetness and overripe impressions, full bodied, good length, round tannin and lush. I have a few bottles myself, so eventually there will be a tasting note from one of my own bottles, but that will not be on the short term.

Monthly Tuesday group #006: Bordeaux 2001 versus 2002 (By VD): We tasted 2001, 2002 and 2000 Pontet Canet in this order; not knowing it was Pontet Canet or even the same wine. This 2000 seems to come from another planet because it is so different in style. In the bouquet the first thing to notice is a lot of toasted oak and smoke. Then good cassis, minerals like graphite, cedar and chocolate. On the palate a lot of toast as well, ripe dark berries, graphite and salty licorice, mocha and espresso. Good acidity and round, still very firm tannin. Great length. This is a concentrated and luxurious wine which needs several more years, so everything can integrate nicely. I have 2 bottles and I hope I manage to wait until at least 2023 before uncorking the first one. 93 - 95+ for this evening and really looking forward to a next try not before 2020.

Monthly Tasting Group HWS #097; Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2007 vs 2009 (By RvD): This wine scored second on a fabulous C9duP evening. The bouquet has beautiful fruits and garrigue as well as a beautiful dose of oak. On the palate dark berry fruits, beautiful garrigue, chocolate and currants, a firm amount of sweetness, but also beautiful acidity. Beautifully dosed oak and soft and round tannin with still a good bite. A very beautiful wine and the oak needs a few more years to integrate perfectly. This is a great and well balanced wine. The only negative remark I can make is that there is a bit heat in the finish. Unfortunately no bottles of this in my cellar, but if I had any I would wait until 2019 or a bit longer. 93 – 94+
