very light and bright garnet colour and light body. floral notes permeate the fragrant nose of cherry, blood orange peel, ripe tomato flesh, and gravelly soil. light bodied and brightly acidic in mouth, red fruits flavours that echo the nose glide over chalky and slightly woody but very pleasant tannic base. anise and pepper spice add complexity. very good length with a tomato note.

in its drinking window now and for another eight or so years.

13% AbV; from 50-100y.o. vines; three-month maceration, followed by eighteen months' ageing in 50HL casks; spends an additional twenty-four months in bottle before release.

Old brick red colour.
Clearly over the top and very mature but still drinkable. Not without qualities and a certain charm. Best on day two after opening.

Bolognese’s note below is spot-on. I would add only that this wine has a wonderful texture even at only 8 yrs past vintage. It was a great find on a Milan restaurant wine list.

Sunday evening quick drinks in the neighbourhood. Drank in Conterno Sensory.
Initially rather austere (although still more open than the Buon Consiglio) and needed air to open up.
Appearance is clear, very pale intensity, ruby colour with thin garnet rim. legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of Morello cherries, raspberries, minerally earth, rose and tar. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), fine medium+ tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of ripe red cherries, raspberries, minerally earth, fine tar, rosehips, spice, underlying cool alpine feel. Crunchy long finish.
Very good quality. Much more giving character in comparison to the Buon Consiglio, and slightly weightier. Really speaks of a place and terroir. My blind guess was young Alto Piemonte/Valtellina.

This exudes classicism. Some VA at first on the nose that blew off fairly fast. Really picked up aromatic steam after 15 to 20 minutes. Mysterious aromas and flavors in the tree bark/walnut department. Little to no fruit, but not in a dried out sense. Rather, we realized after a few minutes of sharing descriptors that not a single one was fruit. The tannins were in a nicely resolved place--slightly grippy but in no way astringent. This closes with a blast of tangy acidity that makes one reflexively reach for food.

AG and I must have been drinking different wines. This felt muted except for the singular cough medicine note. Could have been a beauty if that darker bitter flavors weren’t so dominant.

Very pale color, beautiful nose with floral, red cherry, some funkiness. Reminiscent of Frank Cornelissen. Complexity fades quickly in the glass, though. Light to medium body.

Scarlet with rusty glints. Nose of red plum, faint tar, dense earth, dark violets. Layers of nimble but firmly-etched red plum, berry, hints of asphalt, and sweet earth on the palate. Fresh acidity and youthful, slightly dusty tannin. Longer finish of clear red fruit cut with iron and tar. Lovely wine showing beautifully at this early stage.

Decanted for c. 3 hours. DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT DRINKING THESE WITHOUT SOME SERIOUS AIR.

Color is orange garnet, translucent. Nose is roses and orange blossoms with some herbal notes. In the mouth, cherries, oranges, anise, ginger. Finish has a wonderful sour orange candy quality with rosemary.

There are still some lingering tannins here but they are very fine and not particularly distracting. As usual no oak whatsoever.

Altogether this is another lovely bottle from this producer. Great balance. Super vibrant. Elegant. Definitely has plenty of room to run but very good now.

Having tasted through a ton of wine from this producer over the past year or so, I think my preference is for the Sassella bottlings; they are uniformly more mineral and complex, however, the Grumello bottlings appear to mature a bit earlier and are wonderful.

Very light red color as expected for mountain Nebbiolo, but intense in aromas (roses) and flavors (strawberries, cherry cough drops). This is ready to drink as the tannins are not at all heavy. A bit of alcoholic warmth on the finish (14% on the label), but overall a lovely drink.

Somewhat translucent red. Lifted, dried rose hips, and unlit cigar on the nose. Light bodied. Fresh tasting. Really damn good if this is your thing. It is my thing. Also: still quite good the next day, which is unusual for me.

Brought by MM. About 30 min - 1h after opening. Lovely, elegant aromas of ripe cherries, herbs, and rose. Palate is just beautiful - elegant and transparent. Just ripe cherries, herbs, bark, and minerals. The pronounced tannins kick in on the midpalate but the palate still remains lithe and elegant. There is definitely some ripeness to the fruit but the nice acids keep everything in check. So young with a lot of potential. 93+

ArPePe study (Ora et Labora, Portland OR): The nose is perfumed and refined with elegant tones of red cherries, raspberries, strawberries, spice notes, rose petals, incense, potpourri, and violets. There is a real layering effect going on right now with a lovely coolness to the fruit. The Medium/full bodied feel shows off the refinement and elegance of the nose with tart, high acidity and silky, high tannins. The structure is peeling back to really let the feel shine. This has started to enter a maturity point where there are still ample primary qualities to the fruit while it melds together well in harmony.

ArPePe study (Ora et Labora, Portland OR): Oh mah gawd. This nose. I mean seriously, this nose. One of those things I just love about ArPePe is the purity of which they approach Nebbiolo. And that is in spades here with deep and flowing tones of red cherries, strawberries, raspberries, plum sauce, fresh herbs, crushed rocks, licorice, violets, rose petals, herbal spices, and savory notes. This is that nose that you just get lost in and let it happen. There is a lot of layering already, though there is still very much a primary quality to the fruit. The Medium/full bodied feel is elegant and refined as it caresses the palate with tart, high acidity and silky, high tannins. This wine has floored me. It's just so beautiful. Everything is in its right place while still retaining a good amount of primary fruit. There is a long way to go, but oh boy is this a special one.

ArPePe study (Ora et Labora, Portland OR): The nose is fresh and vibrant with lifted tones of red cherries, incense, balsamico, strawberries, herbal spices, earth notes, and rose petals. There is a good bit of nuance to this nose that really requires a bit of attention. It is perfumed and well layered while still retaining a lot of freshness. The Medium/full bodied feel is deft and refined with tart, high acidity and silky, high tannins. This is drinking extremely well while still possessing a good amount in the tank.

ArPePe study (Ora et Labora, Portland OR): And this is where we begin to stretch our legs and dig in. Oh the nose is just so heady and complex with perfumed tones of strawberries, red cherries, crushed berries, crushed rocks, rose petals, wild flowers, licorice, fresh herbs, and a touch of leather. The fruit is firmly in the red spectrum, but this really has taken on some layering as the tones have begun to work in closer harmony. The Medium/full bodied feel is fairly light on its feet and balanced with tart, high acidity and silky, high tannins. This is a feel that is about refinement. The layering of the nose comes through beautifully here as well while the finish doesn't want to quit. This does feel like it may even have another gear to kick into with a few more years. It's just getting going and it's already a beauty.

ArPePe study (Ora et Labora, Portland OR): The nose is fresh and perfumed as it really lays into the red spectrum with tones of strawberries, raspberries, bright red cherries, red fruits, spice cake, rose petals, licorice, and some clove spices as well. Though the nose is perfumed, it is lacking just a slight bit in the depth department as the tones more sit towards the surface. The Medium/full bodied feel is deft and balanced with tart, high acidity and chewy, high tannins. There is still a good amount of youth to the wine as the tannins have some real bite. But, the nose is gorgeous and a real delight right now in a very primary way.
