Opened the bottle on the Saturday and felt like I was chewing on blotting paper. Immediately put it aside for 24 hours and re-tired it on Sunday. A lot better but still very very young. Needs time at least 2-3 years.

This is a fine and lacy Grenache with notes of strawberries, raspberries, stony notes along with red tea and liquorice? The palate is surprisingly elegant and lacy with bright red fruit, gummy bears and fine gravely texture. The tannins are super fine with a fresh mid-palate , slightly hot but not overly so, and a finely textured finish this is super enjoyable! Drinks well now.

Deep red colour with berry aromas. Floral palate and chocolate. Tannins prominent but these will mellow with time.

2022 Chalk Hill Wines Tempranillo Grenache

McLaren Vale Tempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more

This is a helluva wine, particularly for the price.

Opens beautifully and then lets out its lungs with air. Rose perfumes, plums, raspberries suffused with spices, leather, and something of darker menace (ex Temp?) lurking there too. Entrancing.

Finesse and drive. An admixture of fine sandy Grenache tannin with Temp's firmer, slightly grainy tannin. Works well, providing tension and line for the spicy vibrant fruit. A lick of seasoned oak also features, sympatico with the fruit/tannin, and adding extra spice. A delicious temptress. Knotted hand towels are a must unless you're up for debauchery (consult Danny Craven, the godfather of Springbok rugby, to understand the dharma of the hand towel).

Mixed views surround the 2022 vintage but I've been impressed with the quality and poise of the SA reds tasted to date. The 22 of this blend is a class above an earlier edition (perhaps 2018 or 2019) tried last year, which looked a bit four-square and not my style.

While I've been on the prowl for a knock-out 21 or 22 Grenache in the $30-40 range, so far blends have turned my head. This and the stunning Yangarra GSM 2021 lead the pack.

Chalk Hill's top Grenache, the Alpha Crucis, is all class, one of the finest in the land. But this at half the price is a banger. It scooped trophies for best other red and wine of the show (the famed Bushing Monarch) in McLaren Vale this year. I'm close to awarding it Outstanding (but the hand towel chastens me).

Priced in the mid-20s from bigger outlets, it's killer value.

This is a very good wine of its type. The type is the warm, slightly earthy, South Australian type. There is always a time and place for a friend like this. It isn't always what you want, of course.

From a cooler vintage, following on from a real stinker, this delivers the best things from McLaren Vale - warm, ripe fruit but a little more lively acid than you get from the Barossa; probably due to the cool sea breezes. Blackberry and dark plums are the fruit characters. They are not in the jammy spectrum.

Some nice spice, earth and leather round out the picture. There is very good length, intensity is fine - not off the charts but also not limp. Tannins are close to resolved.

Oak is important to this wine. I think the spice and the texture are very much based on oak. However, the oak works because the fruit can hold it. In my ideal, the fruit wouldn't need the oak, but we drink the wine in front of us.

For me, this falls into the category of wine that you are very happy to drink but don't feel obliged to chase. It is a superior wine of its type, thanks to attention to detail in winemaking and the pleasing freshness. It worked rather nicely on a day when I did something and it worked, in terms of the law. So rare it is.

Saw the heading "quality Aussie shiraz", thought "yes please!". But then a bit surprised with what I got! It's almost (and I can't believe I'm saying this!!) TOO full bodied!

One of the darkest coloured wines I've ever seen, definitely a sipping wine. There's a slight savoury note to it, with a more earthy/oaky finish than I would expect from a shiraz, reminds me more of a heavy malbec. It lacks the slightly sweet fruit tang I usually associate with Aussie shiraz - not unpleasant at all, but not quite what I expected/to my taste and a little expensive to persuade me to buy again.

Deep red plum colour no hint of age. Cigar, oak, alcohol, vanilla? Raspberries, plush, dense, intense. Clobbered by tannins at the end. A monster, slowly maturing.

A surprise, given the price point I wasn't expecting much, but should have expected that the Chalk Hill team wouldn't disappoint. It's supposed to be a cracking vintage and this bottle didn't disappoint. Deep, dark red-purple; black fruit, licorice and oak aromas with a lovely savoury taste. Tannins are very subdued for so young a wine.

From Website:
The fruit was sourced from our organic Chalk Hill vineyards from vines aged 25 and 50 years. Each parcel of fruit was harvested and handled separately. After fermenting on skins for 10 days, the fruit was transferred to a combination of new, second- and third-use French oak barrels, of which 15% were new. It spent 15 months in barrel prior to blending.

The long warm summer produced lower than average yields resulting in concentrated wines with rich mouthfeel.

Opened 6 hours in advance. Big fruit, some spice, alcohol is remarkably well balanced, oak is quite pronounced. Incredible lenght. Has the stuffing to still last quite some years, though I don't think it'll improve much. Lovely wine and a beautiful hommage.

Dark nose of blackberry and toasted spice. Palate shows intensely dark fruit (blackberry, chocolate, black olive), but it's surprisingly light-bodied. It's got powerful acidity but not much tannin, and the finish feels a bit thin and empty. Good with fatty beef, but could definitely use some soft tannin to plump up the palate and balance the acidity.

Full bodied, but doesn't have the peppery notes you'd often find in an Australian Shiraz. Could have used some decanting, held its own for a coupe hours until it was gone.

Somewhat lacking in depth, though it is full bodied (if that makes sense). Definitely brightly acidic, with lighter colored red fruits than normal for a McLaren Shiraz. Kind of cherry I think. Seems strained a bit and herbal notes don’t play that well with this fruit. Okay, but better with food so that notes that aren’t as well integrated have a foil against which to play.
