Medium ruby colour. Medium (+) and developing nose with red plum, dark plum, vanilla, charred wood, baking spice, black pepper and black olives. Medium (+) taste of red plum, dark plum, prune, charred wood, tobacco, baking spice, black pepper, leather, black olives, licorice and potting soil. Long and dry finish. High acidity. High tannins. Full body. A very good Sierra Foothills Cabernet Franc. Drink now or over the next five years. Goes well with beef, game and veal.

Dried fruit, Smokey aroma, full palate has cherry fruit, and mineral qualities, dustier tannins that grip, herbal qualities develop mid palate going into the finish that lingers with clove spice. Found it enjoyable, would like it for causal drinking around a fire with friends.

Happy way beyond price point on this one. I recall $20+- a few years and believe some decent ratings prompted the purchase and it is a steal. Nice fruit but not too much. Fine grainy tannin but not too much. Some acid and a lingering finish. Glad I have more. 92+

Deep ruby in color, alcohol very high, tannins, medium, sweet (dessert), finish long.

Aromas, cold rock, sweet grapes, cranberries, over ripe mandarins, cut grass.

On the palate, sweet grapes, cranberry jam, blueberries, spices, vanilla and oak.

Not a tawny style wine, it's full of ripe red sweet fruit.

Missing that "aged" component.

Pale purple in color. The wine is dry, acid is high, alcohol very high, tannins unremarkable, finish medium.

On the nose, alcohol, strawberry, tart raspberries.

On the palate, raspberries, tart cherries, bramble, green bell pepper.

Unbalanced, alcohol too high.

Wine is bright ruby in color, acid extreme high, dry, little to no tannins, alcohol medium high, medium bodied, medium fruity finish with a zing from the acidity.

On the nose, catch a slight Brett, laying over a bed of ripe strawberries, raspberries, bramble, and a hint of oak.

On the palate, stewed berries, hints of barnyard, red apples, cherries, and a cut of oak.

Tasted at the winery during a library event, and thought this wine around a 93 with intense quintessential aromas and tastes of Gamay, perhaps just this bottle but the Brett has really thrown me off.

Deep purple in color. The wine is dry, acid is medium, tannins are medium, minerality is medium, salinity is low, alcohol is medium, finish is medium, full bodied but very unoffendingly medium.

Aromas of dark fruits, plums, dark cherries, chocolate, spices, oak, vanilla.
On the palate, dark ripe fruits - plums, dark cherries, spice, oak.
Taste like it smells.

Subjective: I like the wine - but it's an unremarkable merlot.

You can smell the fruit and the alcohol. Tannins are not sharp nor dull. A little bit of mountain feel with the tannins. Long finish. Solid wine.

8/2/2023 - TheSagePalate Does not like this wine: 86 points

The wine is garnet red, bone dry, acidity is medium high, tannins are present, coarse and a bit too rough, alcohol is super high and the fruit is drowning here, salinity is medium and minerality is medium.

I likely opened this bottle a bit too soon, very unbalanced high alcohol.

On the nose, dark fruits - black berry, plum, strawberry.
On the palate alcohol blowing out my palate.

The fruit is almost not present, doesn't taste corked though so I guess it just didn't have enought time or the bottle was a bit off.

I liked this wine at the winery, but not on this bottle at home.

Edit: Improved a lot with 2 hours in the decanter. Not changing my score though.

Solid well made wine in a forward style, ready to drink. Earthy fruits and just enough oak "structure" to make it very enjoyable, if a bit straightforward. Nice

Color is deep red with hues of purple. Wine is dry, but jammy and high alcohol give a perception of sweetness. Acid is medium plus. Tannins are present and fine but fairly aggressive. Alcohol is high, very high, likely 15.5% or higher. Salinity is medium. Body is full.

On the nose, intense dark fruits - overripe plums and blackberries, vanilla, and licorice. On the palate, jammy cooked blackberries, ripe plums hit you immediately, followed by vanilla and oak. The finish reminds me of coca-cola. The wine and tastes heavy. I find myself seeking relief from the intensity of this wine that can only be found with a good pairing.

Subjective notes: Wine tastes a bit sweet on the palate and the long cola finish isn't something I enjoy in wines.

NV Lava Cap Mourvèdre Reserve

El Dorado more

6/29/2023 - TheSagePalate Likes this wine: 95 points

This bottle of NV wine is a blend of 2017/2018 vintages of Mourvedre. Color is ruby/garnet. The wine is bone dry, acidity is medium, tannins are high but extremely fine and smooth, alcohol is medium plus, salinity is medium, body is full.

Aromas are ripe cherries, dark bitter chocolate, tobacco, and a smokiness. On the palate, I get ripe cherries, chocolate, baking spices, a warm smokiness, oak, and vanilla. There is a very beautiful minerality to this wine, and it really highlights a lot of the quintessential mourvedre aromas and tastes. I think it is one of the best pure mourvedre wines I've had.
