Alway enjoy this excellent QPR sparkler! Always balanced and intriguing. Easy week-night decision to open and finish a few days later. For $5-7 more than basic cava this offers a lot more. Paid $16 locally.

A very pleasant surprise that shows what American sparkling wine can be, this bottle was purchased in 2018 for $15, and the label code shows it was disgorged in 2017. I had sort of forgotten about it as had planned to drink it at some point over some summer but that didn’t happen. So, we brought it when the opportunity presented to dine at a great BYOB place in Montclair NJ. Ie, if it was dead/sucked, then you just move on. However, to our surprise, this was drinking better than many NV champagnes I’ve had. It was light on its feet while also have decent weight to stand up to food. The acidity was perfect and the fruit was alive with some lemon and brioche, and the finish was quite long. The wine went great with everything from chicken liver mousse to seared Spanish octopus to fried chicken. Wish now I hadn’t consumed my other 5 bottles years ago…

Slightly off dry. Apples, lemons, pears. Syrupy and a little cloying mid-palate. If you want off dry, this is a fine choice.

Decent domestic sparkler for the price. Playdough nose with yellow apple.

Light bubbles, almost frize in style. Medium plus acidity, good cut, green apple unripe pear. Not particularly sophisticated or complex but enjoyable.

The Sixth Annual World's Largest Blind Tasting of American Sparkling Wine (Houston, Texas): Retail $30. 56% Chardonnay, 44% Pinot Noir. Pale orange with a savory, meaty component on the nose. The palate has fruit, but it is subtle, and there is plenty of tartness, but it struggles a bit to come together. Very Good. 89 Points.

The Sixth Annual World's Largest Blind Tasting of American Sparkling Wine (Houston, Texas): Retail $24. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir. Straw to golden with a shy nose of cashew and maybe some tree fruit. The palate is a bit flabby, lacking some sparkle and comes off as a bit sweet. Very Good. 88 Points.

Pears and citrus in this gear QPR bubbly at Costco. Medium size pearls. Profile is smooth and elegant. Not very yeasty and devoid of any brioche in the flavors but still a classy sparkler.

Disgorgement date of Feb 2023. This is very different to the bottles we had with a 09/2022 disgorgement.

Nose feels very Champagne like. Brioche, strawberries, lemons, cranberries, and saline. Seems to have more acidity than the last bottles - which may balance out the sweetness I noticed before.

Medium bodied, chalky, crunchy acidity, and easy drinking. Palate of strawberries, raspberries, lemons, cream, limestone, and a touch of barrel spices. Moderate orange and orange peel, cranberry, chalk, light brioche, and spice finish.

A great combination of easy drinking and complex. Absolute steal at $18 a bottle.

Stepsiblings or Just Besties?

Don't you think it's adorable when I attempt to use millennial speak?

In my time, we would have thought the spelling wrong and you were trying to say beasties (Capt. Jack would understand that).

Taking it at its literal, and contemporary, meaning is more appropriate given today's wine and its association with another winery from the same stable, Roederer.

Scharffenberger Brut Excellence NV

You see, both wineries fall under the same ownership; Roederer. It is the close association with the Roederer Brut Reserve NV, that draws on similarities.

Both source grapes from Mendocino County, although Roederer is 100% Estate fruit while Scharffenberger may use their own along with a portion from Roederer. Their proportions of varietals used are identical (60/40 Chardonnay to Pinot Noir). Another reason for any difference may come from the fact that Roederer uses a small amount (roughly 10-15%) of oak-aged NV cuvée to their wine. They do have different winemakers as well. All of which might contribute to the noticeable differences between the wines, however slight. Primarily in the fruit department, which trails only by a skosh.

So is the savings worth the difference? That's the $9.99 question. That's the diff where I am.

The Roederer has been my "go-to" sparkling for a long time, but recent price increases into the $26 arena have made me more hesitant. At $16, Scharffenberger restores that sub $20 price tag.

Now towards the end of the year, there have been times the Roederer drops in price back to that $15 range, at which time I stock up. Though I can't rely on that.

The good news is that I have enough Scharffenberger to get me to year-end, so for now, I sit and wait.

I hope that doesn't drive me to drink as that may use up my stock and force the issue of choosing one of the stepsiblings or besties before the new year.

Cheers

9/2022 Disgorgement date.

Pours a nice medium salmon with a touch of copper. Moderate medium sized bubbles. Nose of candied raspberries, sweet lemon oil, brioche, and saline. A bit on the sweet side, but very well balanced. Palate follows the nose. There is light tanninc structure present. Medium-length finish of raspberry and sour lemon candy finish with brioche, mild spice, and seashells. A persisting spice profile builds up with a few sips.

While on the sweeter side, it remains very crisp. This is great deal at $20 and going to make it in to my rotation with Roederer Estate as a house bubbly.

Deep salmon color. The nose sports a bright, chalky, floral appeal with raspberries and white cherries, with some biscuits, strawberry rhubarb pie, sea salt – a lot of cool things going on. The palate is racy with fine bubbles and a lush mouthfeel. Strawberries, tart red apples, wild raspberries, the fruit is mixed with biscuits, saltine crackers, honeysuckle, mint. Love the creaminess but this maintains crunchy, fresh vibes throughout. Tthis classic California sparkler is still going strong, and is demonstrating some serious value. 55% Chardonnay, 45% Pinot Noir, aged two years on the lees.
