Although supposedly past it’s best, this wine was balanced, supple and a joy to drink on Christmas Eve

This is going ok at 9yrs but not sure it was ever making claims for greatness? Soft structure, settled bitter lemon, acid edges, early honey and KERO. Will live a while yet but a classic case of unlikely to get better.

Screwcap, 12.5% alc. Pale green gold.

Piercing citrus and tropical fruit, toast, butterscotch, talc and bath bombs, sweet florals, and some pyrotechnic notes of chlorine, wax, and fireworks.

Powerful and vibrant palate, almost spritzy. Firm acidity that bites at all corners of the mouth The initial high-impact citrus drops away quickly on the finish, yet the other flavours continue coming in waves.

Opinion: Powerful and complex Riesling. Can handle extended ageing, perhaps another 10 years?

Pale lemon gold colour. Citrus, lime and lemon on nose. Medium+ to high acidity. Medium body. Flavours of lime, tart green apple. A little unbalanced and simple.

Huge, rich, concentrated nose with stewed plums and a hint of mint chocolate. Again rich, heady concentrated flavour of plums/earth/mineral edge. Very smooth and a very long finish. Alcohol level less noticeable this time as everything is integrated in an evenly balanced manner. i suggest therefore drink up as little will be gained with further cellaring. Best with rare full throttle meats.

Very fresh despite the age. Apricot, peach, carried by a pleasant acidity with orange peel flavours. Great length. In the background a nice minerality showing the region and very subtle kerosene aromas. Brilliant Riesling. Still a few years of life ahead!

Wow. I didn’t even want this - but it was cold and I thought it might go well with a pork belly. So fresh and zesty. No kerosene taint - which I’ve never viewed positively. Apples, acid. Delicious.

Screwcap. 15.5%. Dense black, purple rim. Big Zin spicy fruitcake bouquet with waft of alcoholic warmth, no shortage on offer here. On the palate this is just a huge monumental wine with everything turned up to 11 on the fruit/tannin/acid/oak/alcohol. Classic big Zin structure and needs time - at least another 4 years, possibly more(Zin can fall over quickly with little warning hence my conservative estimate). Like crossing Sangiovese with Durif. Calls for wild boar.
After an hour it dials down and not quite as nice, one of those tricky wines with a limited drinking window after opening.

Ridgy-Didge Riesling Tasting 2018 (Prince Sydney, 40 Hansard Street): Ripe lime, a little struck match, a little reductive. In the mouth it's exceedingly acidic, sharply tart. Short as well. Nah.

Screwcap. Nose of wet hessian, struck match, and sour cherry candy. Palate feels heavy and thick, but cut with sharp, harsh, sour acidity. Intense fruit flavours of blackcurrant, morello cherry, and lime juice.

I'm not sure. Maybe this has just started to develop because on the palate and the nose it is very in-offensive. I'm a bit in-between with this one. Hold or drink. Maybe hold and hope.
