2004 Penfolds Bin 389

South Australia Cabernet-Shiraz Blend, Red Blend more

Had this in comparison to a bottle of '01 we opened, and it was much sweeter on the nose, and noticeably more peppery and tannic, that said it was fabulous as well - Dark purple almost black, well concentrated with notes of black fruit, plum, pepper, mint and vanilla on the nose, big and brawny, but very well structured, nicely balance, silky smooth with an amazing finish, excellent! (92 Points).

Agree with some of the previous reviews, but perhaps I'll be a bit more kind as I believe we are experiencing the real, and significant issue related to screw caps (I'm in Canada, so not sure if it was under Stelvin for the others, but by far the most expensive wine we've had under cap), the issue being the trade off between TCI risk, and the glorious breathability of cork to allow a wine to evolve as in my opinion, this bottle could have been bottled in 2012 let alone being from the 2002 vintage - Dark, full bodied, with a nose of plum, blueberry, black fruit, spice, pepper and vanilla, very well made, balanced and a touch simple considering the pedigree, fruit forward and spicy, smooth on the palate with excellent length (90 Points).

2/16/2014 5:13:00 AM - Thanks GM - This screw cap madness is a result of the science out-balancing the art of wine, and I get the industrialization for mass produced wines under $20, but for fine wines, or simply wines meant for aging I'm not at all convinced, and last night's Black Label experience just reinforced this...
As one fine Aussie wine maker put it, 'We'll go screw cap as soon as Margaux does' says it all!!

Much better than our last bottle of this over 3 years ago, showing this varietal can age and grow more complex, really, really tasty - Black, full bodied with a nose of extreme plum, blueberry, spice, graphite, tar and vanilla, very well structured and integration with many years ahead of it, complex, spicy, intense, off dry on the palate with amazing length, stunning (92 Points).
