2020 Sonoma-Cutrer Chardonnay The Cutrer

Russian River Valley more

3/1/2023 - Zinslut Does not like this wine: 81 points

Went to Smart & Final of all places.. the “Cutrer” was discounted from $35 to $17.99…. Hmmm… what a deal…. Well NOT so much. This is similar to the same characteristic as their regular bottling with this being a Russian River Appelation. Not close to the SC bottlings I revered early in my career… to the point I don’t recognize It. Fruit if Any.. maybe caramelized pear is muddled with course tight grain toasted Oak with again a watery non existent finish. Those that called it Balanced are delusional .. elegant .. maybe in a Car Crash…and scoring it in the the 90’s is a 1990 Fantasy.
Please avoid this and don’t be fooled by the Name or the previous incarnations. A’s Pacino said in Scent of a woman “ All honor is Deeeaaad” Drinkable for a watery puckering glass … but I usually curse fruitless Wine. Good luck SC

Pop n pour over 3.5 hours. I'd take these faded reviews with a grain of salt, they may enjoy young robust cabs or milkshakes as I call them. This has aged so gracefully at 13.5%. For my palate in no stage of decline, plenty of fruit and in balance. Plum, pomegranate, cedar, mint and some leather fill out a lithe profile. Finish lingers, a classic Napa cab. Well stored bottles have room to run. Try my last bottle in 2-5 years.

Beautiful balance of soft spice on the nose, and this is reflected in the artfully constructed palate. The wine is not as deep as previous bottles I have had, and it lacked a little in structure. I do not know where awarding it 97 points (please see below) comes from. 93 I feel is about right,

5/22/2023 1:04:00 PM - I have a half case of this in my cellar and although I've yet top crack open a single bottle I thought I'd reply to your comment about the 97 point score from a previous user. The answer to your question is obvious: Taste is subjective. Or, maybe your bottle didn't show as well as the previous user's bottle. I've tasted the same wine and vintage days apart and rated the wine with vastly different scores. Anyway, I hope your next bottle is better than your 93 point score. Cheers.

After opening the bottle I tasted the wine and thought the wine was tainted. So i decanted it for about 35 mins, thinking it just needed to some sort to blow the mustiness off the wine.
Well the wine was overly acidic with an unpleasant tast. Maybe it needs more time in the bottle but i doubt it. I was highly disappointed

  • Comment posted by Baron Slick:

5/5/2023 6:24:00 PM - Sounds like this could possibly could have been a tainted bottle. Considering other users have rated this wine in the 90's would it be fair to designate this a flawed bottle rather than a score of 84?

Decanted an hour before dinner (lots of sediment) only to find plodding flavors drug down by heavy oak and low acid. We struggled thru a glass apiece and dumped the rest.

4/4/2023 10:33:00 AM - Out of curiosity, to the extent that the second bottle you had was delightful, and given that the rest of user's scores reflect the performance of your second bottle, would it be fair to mark this up as a flawed bottle in lieu of such a low score?

I'm way behind on posting TN's so I'm hoping to get it into CT in the next month or so. I hope you have a better experience next time around. We really enjoyed ours. Cheers.

Could be a bad bottle, as Otis Wine Lover wrote, but I think it's a bad lot. Raisins and VA (volatile acidity). Options: (1) discard, (2) return to Trader Joe's, (3) use in place of balsamic vinegar, (4) use as drain cleaner.

Full bodied and briary upfront, with dark cherries, blackberries, and licorice in the background. It comes across more as Paso Robles than it does Napa Valley, with sound structural integrity, and tannic persistence on the back end and through the finish. Tasty.

Very dry with a little citrus and a lot of mineral elements. Could use a little more fruit in our opinion. Finishes a little bitter. Not bad but we prefer the BdB quite a bit more.

5/24/2022 11:26:00 AM - I've been drinking this bottling for years and it is typically pretty tightly wound at this stage of its development, displaying more mineral-inflected tones in lieu of fruit. I have found that the fruit is more pronounced the longer it ages. Cheers.

A pleasant wine. Has that youthful brightness and shows currants and mild tannins. A medium bodied quaff, not over oaked. Accessed by Coravin and let it breathe a bit. Certainly a short finish. All in all, what you ought to get for about $20 but so rarely do, especially from CA. A nice daily red.

Ripe, buttery, and delectable aromas segue into a superbly dense frame of racy acidity and mineral-inflected notes of loquats, preserved lemons, apples, and nuts. Dry yet mouthwatering, this is structured and perfectly balanced, with bottle age complexity and a beautiful ash-driven finish. All class.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah, this offers bittersweet notes of black cherries and melted, dark chocolate on a thick, syrupy, extracted bed of oak. I didn't expect for it to be on par with its premium label siblings but this was disappointing.

A nice intro to a California interpretation of Rhone varietal wine. Grapey notes of black and blue fruit, asphalt, and white pepper-like intensity. Full bodied and open knit, with flavors that gradually build nice depth, breadth, and complexity as the wine evolves in the glass. Cool label too.

This bottle had a touch of tca. Very mild, added an earthy note. The wine had spicey notes with red fruits, tannins that dissipated in an hour. Medium bodied , would be 89 points w/o tca. The tca was on the cork, immediately apparent upon opening.

  • Comment posted by Baron Slick:

3/10/2021 9:19:00 PM - Hi, to be fair, if the wine had enough TCA to negatively affect the score, shouldn't this be classified as a "Flawed" wine, rather than rating it a lower score, and thus affecting the overall CT rating? Or in the very least, leave it as No Rating (NR). Based on your TN, this was clearly a corked wine and thus Flawed. Thanks

The Third Annual Blind Tasting of American Pinot Noir (My House, Houston, TX): Retail $20. Funk. Not quite Brett, I don’t think, but there is a reductive, sulfur thing going on. Normally, I like the funk, but this is a bit over the top, even for me. The palate is fruity, but that funk is definitely still there. Very Good. 88 Points. thedrunkencyclist.com
