One of the stars of this line-up. So beautifully pure, but also deep, layered and complex, with notes of leather, smoke, tobacco leaf, dark and red berries, some violets, tar and smoke. Medium-full bodied, slightly austere, with medium-high acidity and medium-high tannin that is excellent quality. Superb wine that is a great representation of the winery. Drinking like silk and as usual the first bottle that was empty.

Dinner at Formento's (Chicago, IL): Disgorged July 2016. It's a little surprising that this is actually my first time trying an Egly-Ouriet. But in any case, I found a wine that seems to me to be on the cusp of becoming a more oxidative style. This is a thick and fleshy champagne, full of heft and body, and there's a sappy, bruised apple character here that reminds me of the best of those oxidative wines. This is on the richer side of the champagne spectrum, and there's also a slight breadiness to this wine as well.

Absolute beauty wine that would make all roses in the world turn green with envy. Super polished tannins and a petite sweetness in the fruit that plays in this high tones of the specter.
This is as good as it gets.

5/4/2017 11:36:00 PM - This was PnP in restaurant and drunk over 3 hours. If youre opening one I would taste it first and then judge if needed a caraffe. Some of this barolos from "newer" vintages tend to shut down with air.

    Look forward to your TN.

Opened later in the day than planned. Dam work gets in the way! Took a quick taste and found it a bit more tannic and aromatically tight than expected so, seeing no sediment, I immediately splash decanted and let sit for an hour before back into the btl and onto the dinner where I removed the cork on arrival. We started drinking a couple hours later. The color is translucent lighter bright red color. Lots of floral aromas of roses and violets plus some herbs and spice. Other folks with no knowledge of the producer remarked about the uniqueness of the nose. Everyone was surprised by its weightlessness for a Barolo and most felt it more Burgundy like. That said, the tannins are distinctly Barolo and a bit more present currently than I prefer. Not a bad thing for the long hall but impeding full pleasure at this stage. Flavors are dominated by Rainier cherry, spice and herbs currently along with some stoniness. I enjoyed this tonight and its squarely in my wheelhouse but its needs at least 3 more years plus to tame the tannins and and show more complexity. This seemed to get more tannic and tighter as the night went on so, I'm not sure a ton of air would have mattered. This is not a big tannic beast but rather a wine of finesse and elegance that just needs more time. Very, very happy to own 3 more!

Similar to last year. Rich balsamic at 3 hours. Became floral at 6+. Powerful and delicious and enough elegance to drink now with long decant.

And then you insist its not a flawed bottle...

Something is clearly flawed. Maybe not visual on cork or other but not representative.

Please indicate as flawed. Thank you

Quite transparent and beautiful to look at, but it doesn't convince tastewise. Somewhat muddy and bland. Some cardboard on the nose.

Piedmontese night at home. SO'd for 9 hours. Very dark Serralunga-aromatics of tar, dark plum, dark berries, tobacco, cigarbox, cedar wood, licorice, anise, black tea and leather. It's full-bodied, dense and powerful, with still high acidity and high but top quality tannin. Long and complex finish. A fantastic Serralunga Barolo from this great traditional producer. It's far from being easy-drinking but has just so much character and personality! It reminded me of G. Conterno Cascina Francia in the best way possible. Wow!

Popped & poured; translucent ruby in the glass. Ripe red fruit (primarily cherry) and menthol on the primary nose, with a spice nuance emerging with some air.

Initially tight on the palate; sweet & sour red fruits, adequate acidity. I like it now, but I will be willing to bet I'll like it more once the pizza is done ;^)

Tasted at a big California tasting. Beautiful aromatics of cinnamon, red berries, dark cherries, flowers, minerals and some steely notes. It's medium-bodied and dense with medium-high acidity and medium+ tannin providing structure and freshness. Good length. A very pretty and juicy Pinot Noir from R-M.

Like the last taster, I noticed a strong burnt note on opening (reduction?) which didn't really go away until the second night. It's a subtle but vivid wine with notes of tar, spice, and elegant fruit, though more on the palate than the nose at this point. It may be in a slightly awkward phase right now and in need of a year or two, or at least of decanting.
