Seems grumpier than my previous bottles. Or maybe it’s me, I’m also grumpier.

  • Comment posted by Enfant sauvage:

12/28/2021 6:15:00 PM - Thanks for the heads up. I bought a case of old Pinon in this release (I love his wines), but I mostly picked up sweet stuff from the 80s and 90s. I’m only in for one bottle of this so far, but you may have saved me from from dropping $200+ on additional bottles. What a shame. I wonder if they were always off or if the reconditioning went sideways like some disastrous plastic surgery.

This was really excellent - complex and layered. That said, I think my palate is a bit more attuned to Barsac and this felt just a little thick and cloying. If I ever go into a diabetic coma, however, this is my preferred way to be revived - please take note.

8/10/2020 11:36:00 AM - Good point. I suppose was thinking of going INTO a diabetic coma, but the way it came out I guess that statement is more the equivalent of a do not resuscitate order. Maybe I should rethink that. Be glad I'm not your doctor and do not take note!

Meh. Maybe exploring this producer in this particular vintage was unfair, but I'm not going to spend more money to find out. Didn't love the Chenin Blanc either, and that's saying something for me.

4/24/2020 1:18:00 PM - You had me at Bandol+Fleurie. Gros Nore is a bit heavy for me, though I enjoy a well aged Tempier once in a while, and Fleurie is one of my standbys. "Les Enfants Sauvages" (no relation) make good, funky Mourvedre as well. My problem now would be buying just one or two of your recommended D&Rs by mail without grossly overpaying. If not, do you think I can just pour a little Coudert into my Chateau Pradeaux and get the same result?

Agree with others, best sub-$25 (at the time, well above $25 now) Rhône wine in recent memory. Big, but nuanced and restrained rather than overripe and spoofy. As other tasters have noted, floral and baking spice notes are very prominent. Drinking fine but with plenty of time to continue to improve.

  • Comment posted by Enfant sauvage:

4/20/2020 1:11:00 PM - Gilles has been well and truly discovered. I think this wine still runs about $40 around here for the current release. I got these for $25 at good store in DC on release. I hoard a little of the Cornas now every year, but haven't revisited the VdF.

I'm a fan of Billigan, I find our views often coincide, but I don't know him.

Man, ’15 is just not the vintage for me (in Muscadet or Beaujolais). Ripe. This is always a great value and is still a very good wine, but ripe, damn ripe.

  • Comment posted by Enfant sauvage:

11/5/2018 7:06:00 PM - Right? It’s still a lovely wine for the money, but the wow factor isn’t there. It is totally lacking that intensity and steely razor edge of other vintages like ‘14 and especially ‘12.

A revelation. Excellent stuff. As Billigan noted, and I suspect we have the same salesperson, like a cru beaujolais but with a bit of new world heft. It's clean, almost too clean for my taste in this level of wine, where I tend toward a bit of sauvage (of course). Still, this is a wine I will be returning to. As some Chilenos would say, y volveré, a tus brazos caeré. Las estrellas brillarán, nuestro amor renacerá.

9/13/2016 12:53:00 PM - Definitely up for some drinking sometime. As for our mutual friend, I seem recall that he quoted me the Barral bit as well! I responded that the only Chilean wine I really liked was the stuff from Luyt, to which he replied, "It's like that! Only cleaner!" Well, I don't really see the Luyt resemblance, but that's okay, it's good wine, and our friend does not gush like that very often, so when he does, how can you resist?

Another night, another bottle. This wine is so airy and finessed that (apologies to Debussy, Cage, L'Enfant, Seth, and anyone else reading this purpledrank prose) it's like drinking the space between the notes in 4'33".

Decided to open this sooner rather than later and for a largish group of philistines based on recent mediocre reviews here. Decanted for 2 hours, and I stuck to my Puffeney and didn't get to this until there was only one small glass left. To my surprise, I found it to be excellent. Sweet/ripe? Yes. But also complex, clean, not overly heavy. Lovely red fruit, a bit of spice and herbs. Overall, a very pleasant wine that I wish I'd drunk more of instead of leaving it to the folks who brought over the Chloe pinot noir... I don't regret the Puffeney for a second, but I was led astray (just a bit) by CT for once. Gah.

10/7/2015 6:43:00 PM - Thanks. Everyone here is so focused on finding a wine that's good enough for occasion x, but every so often we err the other way and serve a wine that's far too good for the occasion. I find that amusing.

2012 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Le Domaine

9/10/2015 - sleepyhaus wrote: NR

2012 was a really poor vintage for Loire cab franc, as is evident from this bottle. I'm not saying that it is bad, but it is a very average Baudry Domaine. Just doesn't bring a ton of anything, nor does it have the effortless class that better vintages can show. I found it to be fine but unexciting, confirming most of my other findings from this region in this vintage.

On a more worrying note I have had a concern lately about my tastes and Baudry's wines. I'm finding them to be an almost international take on the region, somehow a bit stripped. I need to dig into my cellar and find a better wine from a better vintage and see if that seems to be true. If so, there is always Joguet and Guion.

  • Comment posted by Enfant sauvage:

9/10/2015 12:54:00 PM - I'm interested that you find Joguet less internationalized that Baudry, I've always tended to find the opposite (not having known Joguet when it was really Joguet). Guion is great too, but he takes rustic to a whole other level. Any Joguet recommendations that are still available and that you would consider more representative of place than Baudry?

2013 Domaine Vrignaud Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume

8/12/2015 - Enfant sauvage Likes this wine: NR

I actually really enjoyed this. It's not a deep wine, nor the most prototypical Chablis, but for $20 it's very good. As some have noted, the nose is a touch on the tropical side for Chablis, but the palate is well within the acceptable range for the region. Not the most tense, edgy Chablis you'll ever have but far from flabby or New World either. A really nice everyday wine.

Ok. Not sure what the fuss is about, other than that this is much less offensive than most California syrahs/Aussie shirazes. Very thick and dark. Dark blue fruit, iodine, but, for me, lacking any of the elegance or nuance of a good N. Rhone.

Unmistakable cab franc profile, albeit a very herbaceous one. Sage, moss, some mild tobacco, plus a good dose of rock and earth, layered over nice red fruit and the expected bell pepper.

While this isn’t going to blow anyone away, it is an absolute steal at $12.

Wow. Just about the best way I can imagine to spend $25 (maybe along with Baudry Grezeaux). This was beautiful after about 30 minutes of air. Funky, acidic, and lithe with cherries, leather, tobacco, aged hard cheese (let's say parmigiano reggiano since this is Italian wine and absurd specificity is the key to any great tasting note). Rebuy. And rebuy, and rebuy...
