2012 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon 40th Anniversary

Napa Valley more

There is a massive presence of sediment clinging to the neck, shoulder and beyond, down the bottle. Squid ink color with intense blackberry fruit aroma without bouquet.
Thick, viscous, cloying, jammy and unidimensional fruit profile without complexity other than the vanilla imparted by American oak on the finish.
If we tasted this blind it would be identified as an Amarone style wine, of indeterminate grape varietal, perhaps a blend of Zinfandel and California Syrah, sweet, devoid of tannin, and with acidity felt in the teeth.
There is no complexity in what is tantamount to a science experiment of building a well made wine, but THIS IS NOT A CABERNET SAUVIGNON. This is the last Camus “Cab” we will buy. Those of you who may have tasted the early 1990s Caymus Cabs (under $20.00 going to 20-24 dollars till around 1994, yea I know, ancient history) will know that the wines used to taste like cabs. Why?

2011 Saxum Broken Stones

Paso Robles Red Rhone Blend more

Well it is that time of year. As my friends know tomorrow I begin my 91 days of sobriety and a low carb diet. Time to cleanse the temple. So for my last bottle of wine before abstinence I chose the Broken Stones. It has been a year and a half since my last bottle and this wine still amazes me. Dark berries and chocolate on the nose. The palate is dark berries, plums, figs, tree bark and chocolate. The finish is never ending. We drank alongside of a 2011 Saxum James Berry and this was definitely the better wine. So to all my friends and my fellow wine enthusiasts I will not be posting for the next three months but I will be reading the posts every morning. So you all stay healthy and good drinking.
