Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend more

Ripe and rich with some heat poking through. A very round and modern style with dark cherries and chocolate. I decanted the wine for an hour because the tannin level was a little high. Afterwards, a slight twig/woodiness emerged on the finish, but not much more. Definitely a new world drinkers Bordeaux.

I recently had a Fonplegade that was in this style, but even more over-the-top (I believe Rolland may be associated in both of these wines)...not sure exactly how involved he was in each of these chateaux, but that could possibly be a connection to the styles. Anyway, not how I want my Bordeaux to taste.

No rush...wine has lots of life left. Drink up by its 21st birthday. Drink 2024-2036. 88 points.

Granted, not like decades ago...but they can only work with what Mother Nature gives them. I need to start drinking down the wines in my cellar that I believe are the more modern Bordeaux wines and start buying more of the Sociando Mallet's of the world. Cheers!

12/4/2023 5:39:00 PM - I'll name a handful off the top of my head:

    Left Bank:

    Sociando-Mallet
    Cantemerle
    Cos Labory
    d'Issan
    Chasse-Spleen
    Potensac
    Batailley
    d'Armailhac
    Talbot
    Branaire-Ducru
    Duhart-Milon
    Clerc Milon
    Ferriere
    Durfort-Vivens

    Right Bank is trickier:

    Anything by Mouiex
    Bourgneuf
    Vieux Chateau Certan

And not sure what else...like you said, St. Emilion is a minefield. Can't help there.

Light Cork & earth, not terroir type notes, more like dirt. No fruit, cork & earth on the palette, somewhat bitter + alcohol thru the finish. Tannic bite, not overly stiff. With air, the nose blows off some of the lesser attributes. In the mouth a suggestion of fruit, but still some cork on the finish. Just mostly dark & damp after an hour. Not much plum, cherry or berry.
I sure hope day 2 is better, &/or bottle 2 is better. 1 of 2

10/28/2023 6:36:00 PM - This bottle sounds corked. But, 86 in a fair score, IMO. Jeff Leve likes any wine that is ripe and rich...extra points if Rolland had a hand in it.
