2015 Blue Poles Allouran

Margaret River Red Bordeaux Blend more

Screwcap, 13.2% alc.
Dark and vibrant blood crimson.

Aromatic nose of liquid lead pencils, blackcurrant, a touch of beetroot and ripe capsicum, but not under-ripe. Nutty oak, redcurrant, wet rocks, chocolate.

Dusty tannic grip. Rather closed on the palate, with only shortish length. Pretty light, bodied and fruited. Smells sweeter and richer than it presents on the palate, where it is reasonably sour-fruited and austere. Different on day 2; more integrated and fleshed out.

Opinion: A nice drink. Guzzle-able. Could sit smelling this for hours!

Continues a very strong run for me from this producer, one that I consider probably the most underrated in MR (along with Higher Plane?). Deeply rooted in structure over flavour with grainy red fruits, savoury layers and a presence that has proper length. 5yrs+ ahead.

Opened for two hours. Has durif-level durability in that it tastes very young despite its 12 years (although it does have screwcap to make it even longer). Still quite closed on the nose with some molasses and figs. Intense meaty, dark-berried mouth but elegant at the same time. Long carbon paper and licorice finish. I think this will improve even more but can't be sure. Note: No sediment, which means it was overfiltered and will limit any further development.

Quite perfumed. Blackberries, with fine tannin structure. Excellent!

Singing. Secondary characters just ever so slightly becoming apparent. Love this juice. What value.

Spice on the nose but I don't really taste it. The palate is a mix of of tart fruits; plum, backberry, something else black-ish that I can't place. Lots of acid keeping things very fresh. Chewy tannins, soft but grippy, cheek-coating. Mostly primary, I don't get a lot of oak character and not yet tertiary. Very enjoyable already but needs to find a next phase of evolution to really wow.
Good now, but mostly I'm curious about where it goes with time. Wants 5-10 more years, I suspect, to really unfurl.

Developing nicely - has texture, flavour and depth. A lovely merlot. Not a lightweight wine - punches well with flavour

For mine remains at the top end of seriously structured reds from MR. Grainy tannin, dry red fruits; subdued but not. Euro smarts.

What place is there for well-crafted but anodyne wine? In a way I would prefer a wine with personality, even it is a bit of a rough diamond. However, an odious personality is probably still a thing deserving obloquy and anodyne might be to preferred?

I came to this wine in about 2018 with much goodwill, having read fine things about the maker and their Merlots. I was underwhelmed and it was yet another reminder that whatever the merits of the AFR, it's wine writers (in terms of my preferences) were not to be trusted.

I found the wine underwhelming at the time, not because it was bad but because it was dull. The oak was a little prominent for my taste but was not badly handled or clearly out of balance, the fruit was varietal but uninteresting, length and intensity were medium; overall a very medium wine. Good for a meal with people who don't care about wine, or for a time when you have a cold or rabies, or want to live like a Seinfeld viewer.

Nothing much has changed. It is more integrated but still dull. It might become a late life eccentric, but I suspect it will just get more and more inoffensive, like one of those sad old people who no one notices, cares about or is offended by. At the nursing home staff and visitors step over and around his body for days after he has expired. They have to look up his name.

As Saki wrote in Christmas with Dull People "They say there is nothing sadder than victory except defeat. If you have ever stayed with dull people ... you can probably revise that saying". If you have a cold and want something to cut through the food, drink a Negroni or a Martini. Don't waste time with people who don't care about wine. Suicide over Seinfeld.

A beautiful showing. Balanced and fresh. Dark fruits and good complexity. Was a bit circumspect with the blend (Merlot driven) but very positively surprised.

Hard to find an Australian Cab Frac this good. Drank beautifully at first open and then opened up to another level over the next few hours. It certainly has many years ahead but drinking so well now.

This is a super classy wine. Beautifully made. The bright acid profile is a highlight. This could be anything in years to come. About as good as it gets for Australian Merlot and equally as good as the 2018 of the same wine.
