2012 Elk Prairie Vineyard Petite Sirah

Lake County more

Ah, the purple grin known as Petite Sirah (as if it were petite in any way). The wine you only drink with family or "real" friends. Its kind of like those dental chews you had as a kid that colored your teeth and showed you how bad your dental hygiene was. I was surrounded by loved ones tonight, so I indulged. To be honest, I've been on a Petite Sirah tear (or binge). I'm embarrassed to tell you how many bottles I purchased in the last 3 months (about 40).

I picked up this Elk Prairie PS on my way through the Redwoods from Eureka. I didn't visit the winery- I believe I picked it up at a touristy gas stop in Myers Flat. I'm now going through my PS collection in random order.

Upon opening, the Elk Prarie PS was hot & bothered-- undrinkable to be honest. But I wasn't intending to drink it right away. I decanted for about 3 hours, poured a glass and put the rest back in the bottle.

It still took a little acclimating. I wasn't sure if I liked it at first - but I kept needing more sips to figure it out. It was still a little hot, and long legs pointed to a significant alcohol content (confirmed by my foggy brain after glass 2 and this rambling review). This wine is eccentric. Everything a PS is supposed to be (fruity, dense and bold), but an extra dash of pepper. A little rough around the edges- I probably should have let it age a good 5-10 years lol. But in the end, I wanted a second glass and I'm already looking forward to round #2 tomorrow night.

2009 Elk Prairie Vineyard Pinot Noir

Humboldt County more

1/23/2015 - TWDummy Likes this wine: 93 points

Slightly hazy in appearance with a light ruby color. On the nose, pronounced aromas of cherry, raspberry, pink roses, vanilla and hints of tobacco and earth. On the palate - light-bodied, high acidity, little to no tannin. Flavors of juicy cherries, grapefruit rind, cola and forest floor. Long finish. Beautiful, fruit-forward wine with a lovely lean mineral subtext. This aged very well, indeed. Elk Prairie Vineyard is located in southern Humboldt County. 10 acres of mostly Pinot Noir and a small amount of Cabernet Franc. Elev. 1200 ft. Vineyard started in 1992.
