Great value sparkling wine. Yeasty apples with reasonable bubbles. Not the most complex but at the price point that is okay

2012 Bon Cap Pinotage The Ruins

Robertson more

3/15/2018 - johnrm Likes this wine: 89 points

A more acceptable example of Pinotage than I feared (yes, I might be thought slightly prejudiced against this grape). Organic production and the vines are old, dating from the late 1960s. Raspberry jam is the prominent component on the nose and palate but with some plummy (and some cherry) fruit developing gradually. Some spice. A very 'juicy' wine with excellent acidity, integrated tannins and remarkable length.
Just the merest hint of 'burnt rubber' that taints so much cheaper Pinotage but not really a problem here. Perhaps it might be more kindly described as slightly 'chocolatey' at the end? Quite an enjoyable bottle. It is certainly the best Pinotage I have tasted. It improved over a couple of hours and was good with food - I have raised my score a point.

you could drink it but it had a bitter astringent quality that made it unlikeable. $3 grocery outlet.

I think we have something here. Found this in a dusty corner in one of our local retailers. It has been sitting upright, but the screw cap did it's job and has maintained the freshness over all this time. Rich golden color. Needless to say, the 62% Chardonnay and 17% Viognier bring a high viscosity, lifted mouth feel. There is the beginning of layers of flavors starting with caramel leading to a steely, mineral citrus and even some apricot and orange peel. By the mid palate the Viognier brings a honeyed flavor on the roof of the mouth. By now nicely integrated and very well balanced. The finish has some peach, orange, melon and citrus.

Initially had a nice balance of bright fruit and pepper, but the longer it sat the more lush and smokey it became and lost the spice that balanced it out. After being open for a couple of hours, the overripe juiciness of it was overbearing to me. All that being said, for the price point, it's not a bad buy as long as you don't let it set. It paired really well with a bbq marinated chicken.

To the other 5 CT members that are holding this wine... gift it to someone you don't care for very much. I believe this is the lowest rating I have given a bottle on CT. One smell of the cork and the most descriptive word would be... yuck. Color is of urine... yes I did just say urine. 65 rating may be generous but I may be able to put this in the Nissan and improve my fuel mileage.

A bit of enigma, but a good one. Fruity without a touch of sweetness, combined with spice and leather. Very good, especially for the price. Was a high scorer among 12 wines in a blind tasting.

This wine is lacking in fruit but shows some bruised pear, apple, and minor tropical fruit. The wine does show an interesting nuttiness, honey, and toast, but with out the fruit, balance isn't there. Structure is lacking as well, with poor acidity and making the wine flabby and lethargic.

Liked it even tho more a red fan. Little strong which I think helped. If I recall pear, honey, little pepper heat yet smooth and relaxed. Can see this with chicken, fish, or even some pasta in white sauce. Yet I drank no food and enjoyed it.

Tobacco, clove, candy cigarettes and kirsch on the nose. On the palate, fruit is full and round with a touch of smoke, comprised of plum, blueberry and canned peach. Tartness and tannins help give focus and structure. I have never been a fan of Pinotage but its presence in this blend does not detract. One of the better South African wines I've had, really.

Mature thoughts to the aromas. Palate shows the creamy side of Chardonnay along with a hint of ripe viognier-ness. An easy oak appeal. Well done at $12.

Vinoteca Winter Portfolio Tasting 2011 (London): Pale red. Marmite-y nose. Then sweet red fruit on the palate. Ripe and juicy but a bit simple. Better than the 2009 but, for some reason, and despite organic production, it just seems synthetic somehow.
