2012 Cayuse Syrah Bionic FrogWalla Walla Valley more |
4/24/2024 - Ex-Ray Likes this wine: 98 pointsFourth time tasting this vintage since Nov. 2020. Third time tasting this vintage since Nov. 2020. Color is still garnet and opaque but no hints of amber edge. The aroma is complex and powerful, of black cherries, blackberries, plums, subtle toasted oak. Slight herbal component but has only a subtle roasted meat component typical of other Cayuse syrahs. A hint of bacon fat also. On the palate the fruit is explosive, round, rich, and complex, not a hint of tannin. The aftertaste is extremely long and balanced, no excessive heat. Very reminiscent of Guigal's "La-La's". Three more bottles, will probably have one every six months or so. |

4/19/2024 - Cow Town Likes this wine: 95 pointsThe last review, from 2021, said it could use more time. I agree, but in 2024, even if it could use more time, it is exceptional. Best Cayuse I have had in years. Funk level was low, fruit was dark and present, but everything was in balance - tasted like a well-aged northern Rhône. I have a love-hate relationship with Cayuse, but this was squarely in the love box. |

4/15/2024 - Clark W Griswold Likes this wine: 95 pointsPnp for my wifes Birthday. This is the usual cayuse combination of ripe fruit and delicious umami notes. Could list them all off but you know what you're getting into. The cork was perfect. Seemed very young and vibrant still. Ever so slight bitter note on the finish. I'm thinking another 10 years to go or more. These are such timeless wines. Bought two bottles each of 13 and 14 off of an acquaintance for the allocation list price a few years back. Sadly this was my last bottle of the 13s. |

4/9/2024 - Ex-Ray Likes this wine: 96 pointsSecond time tasted. This bottle is dark garnet and still completely opaque. Very Northern Rhône style, with sweet smoky roasted meat and bacon aromas, complex and pronounced; black cherries and plums also in the nose. The flavors match the aromas; full-bodied but extremely round, balanced and smooth, nice acidity, very little tannin, and a very long and lingering aftertaste with just a slightly hot component. The finish keeps going on. The wine put on weight and complexity the second evening, one reason we like to taste many wines over two evenings. Cerise is one of our favorite Cayuse syrahs for its elegance and complexity, though not as big as several others, such as Armada. Perfect now, would drink over next 1-2 years. |

4/5/2024 - Nico Botto wrote: flawedAnother Cayuse bottle with the same consistent flaw with the waxy finish and the plastic/gasoline off gas nose. So disappointing for such a celebrated winery that I adore, but too expensive to have too many flawed bottles, from bionic frog to God only knows, it feels getting close to one in every three or four that have been flawed. Especially the ‘13’s and now this ‘16 Sadly. and these are purchased from the winery stored in a professional wine fridge. Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

3/31/2024 - Night Train Likes this wine: 94 pointsCompared to a bottle almost two years ago, this has really settled down. It's now much better integrated. The creosote is muted, but all the other desireable components are still present - pepper, grilled meat, garrigue, minerals, etc. Tannins still present, but they're under control. Rich, with a great finish. Good stuff. Guessing it has years left on it. |

4/1/2024 - Deb293 wrote: 94 pointsSigh. This is my last bottle of this lovely wine. So soft and voluptuous; like velvet in the glass with well-integrated tannins and a very long finish. Slight hint of tapenade, but more remarkable for the intense, brambly dark fruits. This is the second day after opening and there's no sign of degradation. If it weren't for three-bottle bundling, I'd be getting this wine still. |

4/1/2024 - wine4ever Likes this wine: 96 pointsBeauty & the Beast rolled into one wine. Elegant, smooth, luscious yet bursting at the seams with complexity and flavor. Full bodied, with a smokey, violet and blueberry bouquet. Ever changing palate of dark cherry, plum, blackberry, olive, soy, graphite, meat juice, licorice, black tea, menthol, herbs and more. Super long finish. How does he do it? Perfect now and should be for at least another 5-8 years. Bravo. |
