Purple with magenta rim, low transparency. Not much on the nose, stone, preserved plum. Dried fruit on palate. Short length, astringent, dry finish, tannins inside lips.

Tannins ahoy! Not only on the first day, but on the second, the rough tannins kept me from tasting much of the wine. On the third day, the tannins had finally receded enough that I could taste the rest of the wine, and it was actually kind of nice. Good fruit with some herbal nuances, though the tannins were still kind of rough. I'm not sure I'd age it though, as I suspect the fruit might die before the tannins.

Appearance: deep purple, youthfully bright, medium staining, medium+ tearing, no rim variation nor sediment.

Nose: clean, medium- intensity, youthful, black plum, ripe raspberry, black olive, black pepper, clay pot, dusty earth.

Palate: dry, medium+ tannin, medium acid, medium+ alcohol (14%), medium- concentration, medium body, medium- finish, black currant, black plum, blueberry, ripe raspberry, black pepper, clay pot, dusty earth.

Overall: A clean, youthful, Malbec-based wine (with 25% Merlot) that shows the expected black fruit notes with a touch of pepper and minerality. The structural balance is pretty decent, but overall the flavor concentration and length are a bit disappointing. The fruit isn't concentrated nor interesting enough to make up for the lack of many of the herbal and more interesting earthy notes that I would expect from a Cahors. The absence of oak means that there isn't much complexity in the wine overall, but I think that was probably a good winemaking decision because this level of fruit would likely not be able to stand up to too much anyway. Certainly an easy drinking and casually enjoyable wine, but not interesting nor unique enough for me to seek out again.

Dark color. Nose: Dark berries, light floral notes. Dark cherry, minerality, finishes dry with healthy tannins. Leans more Bordeaux-like than Cahors (14.5%)

Sat, 11/23/19, $2 Tasting (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): Apparently 75% Malbec, 25% Merlot grown in "a variety of soil types including gravelly sand & clay/limestone."

N: A melding of ripe berries & toast (?) with notes of minerals; Intensity lurking?

P: LM, poss Med, body; RNDISH entry with NICE, almost swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which stays within hailing distance of the init frt as it surprisingly PRETTY much works itself out by the LONG, balanced finish with an ALMOST pleasant bitter/swtness (60:40) to the dusty tannins. NEEDS through '21, then at least coming CLOSE to approaching its 10th. My VG+/EXC-, even the higher eventually POSS being low, though one MUST be... patient. ;) 90 pts & Silver @ Decanter's '17 World Wine Awards. [This vendor's $12.95 is now $2 < wine-searcher's only current source.]

Wines At Our Table; February 21st 2016; 2/15/2016-2/21/2016: Garnet color with with earthy black fruit (blackberry, plum) aromas. On the palate it's medium-bodied, fresh and a bit tannic with a bit of minerality. Blackberry and plum flavors dominate with a bit of cassis and roast coffee flavors, and a lingering finish. A blend of 97% Malbec with 3% Tannat, this Cahors is sourced from 30-50 year old vines planted in calcareous clay.

Purple that shows a bit of crimson in the light. Spice, stems, and cola on the nose. Medium bodied, blackberries, tart cherries, a bamboo curtain of tannins, tobacco, dark chocolate, and a medium-long really dry finish. I should have run this through the vinturi.

On the pnp this was shut down. No nose. No palate. All acid and out of balance. After 15 minutes in the glass it started opening, but still it seemed tight and not willing to give up what it was holding. Still acidic.

After hours of breathing it starting showing spice and floral notes on the nose along with black and blue fruits.

The palate of black fruits, tar, fig, and light smoke are balanced with slightly mouth drying tannins. Long finish. I was pleased to not find any green vegetal notes (pyrazines). This wine came around nicely. 88

At $21 not a solid QPR, but hey, it's from France... :)

Observation: my first Cahors Malbec. It's a completely different beast than the fruit driven Argentinian Malbecs. Still a good amount of fruit, but more old world in style than their Argentinian brethren.

Edit: popped this three days ago. Poured one glass, tasted and made notes. Stored 1/2 bottle in Pladypus (just a small bubble of air inside,) left one glass in bottle. Next night had glass in bottle. Meh. Third night had 3rd glass from Pladypus. An improvement, but only slight. Tonight, the forth and final glass. It too, from the Pladypus. Improved. Fruit toned down. Layers of fruit, tobacco, vanilla, all with a mouth filling viscosity and tannic backbone. Raised from 88 to 89.

I can't believe I didn't take formal notes, after holding this in the cellar for so many years. So, from memory then. Fantastic dense opaque colour - incredible for a wine of this age. Still quite tannic with great fruit. Drinking well now, but can continue to hold. Was surprised by the density and fullness of the fruit flavours. A little bit earthy and rustic too, but all very good. A successful experiment in Cahors!
