A really impressive Cali cab with Bordeaux style power. Fragrant on the nose displaying loads of dark fruit, spice, mocha and walnut, vanilla and tobacco. Silky smooth tannins and soft acidity. A refreshing finish. I’d buy a case of this!

This wine made me think of my old cabin in the woods. Make that the outhouse of the cabin. Something is radically wrong here. Avoid. (Note: this had been stored in my climate controlled Eurocave).

Drinkable but not fruit left, a little hot and little flavor. Too old.

Made in a California more elegant possibly leesy style. It feels rich as it crosses the palate with a broad combination of tropical and orchard fruit. Maybe even some melon. There is very adequate balancing acid but it hits you on the mid palate rather than attack on the entry. Orange and tangerine flavors and aromas. Even some banana. Mild golden color. The pure and expressive tropical fruit lingers for minutes.

This is a big full flavored fruit forward blend. The red fruit is nicely layered with earth. It has low tannins and a nice long finish.

Brutally intense dark ripe prune and black cherry nose. Dark purple as wine gets. Full bodied. Plenty of legs. Stains the teeth. Rich and solid. Big dose of oak. Spice and eucalyptus. Mulberry finish. Some how it all balances. Kind of the Prisoner of Paso. Overall dominated by big ripe blackberry and plum.

This blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Petit Verdot has a fresh, medium-high intensity nose of dried herbs, red & black fruits, currant, cassis, and fine wood spice aromas. On the elegant, medium-full to full-bodied it palate it has spicy aroma replays which are supported by smooth, well-structured tannins and very good acidity. The long, savoury oak finish is firmly structured with youthful, drying tannins. Will be even better in a few years and should drink nicely to the late 2030s. Score: 93+ pts

This deep-to-opaque crimson wine is a blend of 77.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15.6% Petit Verdot, 6.5% Merlot and 0.4% Cabernet Franc, aged for eight months in French oak (50% new). Serially tasted over a three-hour period from a bottle that had been popped and poured, it fully opens after the first hour to reveal aromas and flavors of chocolate-covered cherries, mulberries, Asian spices and pipe tobacco. Medium-to-full-bodied, low-to-medium in acidity, seamlessly alcoholic (14.5%) and with fairly well-integrated oak at such an early stage, it wraps its flavors with plentiful sweet tannins, stays solid in the middle and finishes with medium length. This is a very credible "workhorse" Cab from a winery that offers several other bottlings that sell at a significant premium. Drink now-2032.

It doesn’t taste like a Napa Valley Cab, so it must be crap, right?

This wine -so common at markets across California- is really quite good. Heavy notes of cassis and cherry with herbal overtones -oregano and a touch of fennel. The ending is pleasantly secco and works loam and a little tobacco into a long finish. You can taste the skillful use of new French Oak in the barrels.

80.4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11.5% Petit Verdot, 7.8% Merlot, 0.3% Cabernet Franc

Tasting Note 15 of #50in2024

First time I ever tasted Daou Cab Sav from Paso Robles.. I was disappointed.

I approached it open-minded - having heard of Daou before but not knowing much about its production, reputation or price.

I looks like deep purple in the glass. The aromas were pretty strong ...almost perfumed (unnaturally strong?) But it still smelled good.

I wasn't performing a tasting per se, so I just jumped in to have a sip in a social setting. The first thing I thought of was "sweet". The wine tasted so sweet to me. Almost all the cabs I drink are from napa and I am not deeply familiar with paso robles wines, but this was not a traditional cab taste in my opinion.

I drank the glass, and it tasted like ok red wine but was too sweet for me. One glass and done. I was left like it was wine served at a wedding or a bottle from the grocery store.

I had been talking with a friend who asked me what I thought it cost based on taste and I said $30 -- pretty close after we googled the cost.

This is not a wine I would choose again. Its ok, and perhaps even a step up for those early in their wine journey moving on from Apothic Red.

This just isn't a good expression of cab sav. at 77% cab sav and blend of others, I think it misses the mark.

Some friends over for a little tasting of big red wines. This was the best wine of the evening and far from the most expensive.

Blend of free-run Cab Sav, Ca Franc, and Petit Verdot, aged 22 months in 100% new French oak.
Opaque ruby color, offers aromatic contrast between dark, savory cherry fruit, chargrill and graphite, and top notes of green pepper and rose petals.
The palate explodes with detailed flavors and its tannins are already resolved and chocolaty, with seamless acidity and exotic spicy layers emerging on the extended finish. Wow!

Big Jammy but very good. 15.2% abv on the label. Interesting wine with a crowd pleasing style. Good depth of flavor. Not what I am looking for but very good wine, also very expensive. Picked this up to give it a try and I would go Napa at this price.

Bold and weighty but not grossly heavy or too sweet. The smoky, oaky, coffee bean note overpowered some of the fruit according to some people in our tasting group but I think once it breaths a bit this settles nicely into a rich example of a CA merlot.
