In my opinion, it’s well balanced and mature, a bit of red currant and less cherry, so fruit is not the main theme, but therefore there is a lot of all spice, clove, some juniper and bayleaf, some white pepper, some wood notes in the background and leather tones. |

12/3/2023 - RGCM Gananda Likes this wine: 93 pointsPrior bottle was 11 months ago and this wine continues to show quite well, but is a small step down from its previous heights. Black cherry no the nose along with spices, earth, tar and leather. Especially after being open for a few hours, is clearly moving away from the fruit and onto secondary notes on the nose; not a negative thing, but a clear sign of a 23 years old wine. Medium bodied now with very rounded and open black cherry upfront and very good depth. There's a touch remaining of the blackberry upfront to provide some contrast. Mid-body has also retained its density and shows a mixture of black cherry and plum. The combination of density and blackfruit through the middle leaves the wine feeling very elegant and silky, but without some of the complexity and nuance it previously showed. Mostly integrated tannins, acidity and spices on the back along with minerals and spices through the finish. The fruit and density/roundness through the middle are this wine's strengths. It has enough acidity and tannins for support, but it simply doesn't have the vibrancy it exhibited even just a year ago. There are obviously going to be bottle variations on a wine of this age and while I do think my prior bottle was a slightly better bottle, I think my bottle today is indicative of where this wine is likely to be today and into the future. It still has time yet, but I would drink this over the next year as barring a positive bottle variation, every additional day is going to take another small piece away from this wine. Glad I was able to enjoy my last bottle when it was still showing so well, even if perhaps not as great as previously. |
