Taste is unctuous honey with an additional lingering (but generally pleasant) bitterness that stands out on the aftertaste. A small bit of the trademark gerwurz lychee, but the honeyed notes kind of overwhelm that. A little simple on the finish and hasn't quite gelled together yet, though it did get better as it opened up. |

I was surprised to see a grand cru from such a highly regarded vineyard and top producer in a good vintage on sale so cheap, but I was disappointed by the wine. It was recognisably rieslingy (petrol and peach on the nose) and had definite Alsatian character, but I found it excessively fat and a bit oxidative, with too much of the wet hay character that I get on pinot blanc and don't really like. Hopefully just a bad bottle. |
