Seemingly better than my previous taste 5 years ago. Sangiovese bite with some merlot richness. Nice structure and great with lamb and roasted vegetables.

PnP, vg showing. I wasn't planning on opening my final bottle, but a guest stopped by and was curious, so here we are. Fully mature with decent freshness, drink now. Rather elegant, the lightest touch of dusty savory. The core of fruit is fading, it's more tertiary than anything. 13,5%., drink in the next several years based on the last two bottles. The 01s are still showing rather young and snappy.

Let’s just get the obvious out of the way: yes, it’s THAT Lamborghini. After Ferruccio retired from building cars and tractors, he bought the La Fiorita estate in Umbria and he took up winemaking. I’ve had the good fortune to enjoy a few different vintages of “Campoleone”, their most serious wine, over the years but it’s often a bit of a challenge to find in the middle of the US. It’s traditionally a 50/50 blend of Sangiovese and Merlot and labeled as an IGT. I had two bottles of the 2001 vintage in my cellar and decided to open one because, why not? As luck would have it, the first one was corked. Might as well open the second! That’s more like it!

Popped and poured a small glass for myself. The 2001 “Campoleone” pours a deep ruby/purple color with an opaque core moving out towards an orange rim; medium+ viscosity with light staining of the tears. Some faint signs of sediment too. On the nose, it seemed a bit reticent so I took Tim Heaton’s lead, based off his fabulous note from back in 2017. Into the decanter it went while I prepared dinner. I ended up leaving about 2oz in the bottle as it was full of sediment; almost a muddy sludge. After about 90 minutes, the nose came alive!

Developing still, after 23 years! Beautiful notes of plums, brambles, purple flowers, leather, tobacco, green herbs and spice drawer. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins (though well integrated at this stage) and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long, dry and zippy. What a tasty treat and I can’t underscore how youthful this seemed! Based off this experience, well-stored examples are drinking well now with a 1-2 hour decant or enjoy through 2031 with ease.

PnP. I've had two in the past year with consistent results: it's time to drink up. I'm really happy to have opened when I did because, while fully mature, there's still (just) enough freshness to keep this elegant and enjoyable. It needed 30 minutes to fully open, and once it did, it slowly faded over the following two hours (in bottle, not aerated to decanter). Some beautiful tertiary with a few strokes of charming secondary notes, too. A goodly amount of sediment, as expected. DRINK NOW. recommended

PnP. My third of four, and this particular one, while managing good freshness for its age, proved a good reminder to drink my final bottle sooner than later. Mostly tertiary at this point, with soil, red and dark berry, and forest notes. Medium-bodied, fine, round tannins, avg+ length and decent complexity. Now and the next several years, if this one is representative. 13,5% abv. recommended

Drinking well, this bottle didn't quite have as expressive a nose as a bottle a couple/few years ago...smooth, pleasant, adequate structure. I don't see this improving from here

My final bottle of this vintage. Part of a pasta and pizza Sangiovese night with my wine group. No formal notes. But as a Merlot/Sangiovese blend, it seemed heavier (or more full bodied) than the all Sangiovese wines.

Still retains deep purple color-no brick. The nose was somewhat disappointing with only a hint of dark fruit. The palate was better with notes of tobacco and licorice and toasted oak. At the end of it's prime drinking interval.

A nose of muted red fruit, brickish in color. A medium to full bodied with black cherry, some licorice and spice on finish, past it’s prime. www.winelx.com

I noticed the cork seemed of low quality when I pulled it. After I poured the wine into my glass it looked surprisingly transparent. I should have been more careful when I tasted it, it's vinegar.

My first btl i am actually drinking of this having given 3 of them away over the years. Very lovely polished and unique Tuscan wine. The sangio/merlot blend works here and both varietals show their best characteristics, and really seem to play off each other. There is nice tart sangio bing cherry to balance out the rounder plummy merlot. Tons of mineral (iron) and forest floor notes. My one critique is the wood seems a a bit heavy handed here, and this is overall quite internationally styled (as I expected). This is starting to dry out and should be drunk up in short order. Needs food, but drinking it solo at the moment.

Needed a 30 min decant to open up. Well balanced wine that’s medium bodied with a decent finish. Certainly in its prime. This was as good or slightly better than the 01. This will drink well for another 3-5 years.

Probably my last bottle. Chapeau to Bob for putting this wine onto the radar of the international wine community. While I struggle with Bob’s credo of bigger is better towards the end of his career, this was just a great find 20 years ago. Still a fairy dark garnet, no signs of oxidization which I find remarkable for a Sangiovese / Merlot blend, this is showing a great balance of those two grapes that are fairly rarely combined. Well delineated fruit, integrated tannins and good length. Still in a great spot - drink now
