Very evolved nose, brown sugar, loads of leather, sous-bois mushrooms... Took 30 min to open up in the glass with beautifull aromas of sandalwood, cigar box, roasted meat, loads of leather and completely integrated tannin... Very nice wine at 54 years of age!!

popped and served without decanting. Very light color, initially acidic on the palate. Plenty of preserved salty plum (話梅) with savory notes, along with a little leather and certainly something fermented. Later started gathering body in the glass with aeration. Nose was nice and fruity, with plums, black fruits, and a little animal. Less powerful than expected, but a lovely wine nonetheless.

popped and served without decanting. Obvious notes of stewed fruit, still a little sweetness on the nose, so fragrant and lovely. Later on also a little bit of black olive, and almost a little nutty on the nose. Acidity relatively high but still has a little sweetness on the palate.

Wow. Served blind. Thought 1990s burgundy ! Ruby with just a hint of age and bricking. Still lots of red fruits and perfume on the palate. Quite a lean after taste. From BV

Tasted at Bern’s, this wine had a deep red center and tawny rims. The nose was a bit quite at first but then quickly ramped up to high- intensity notes of plum, tan spices, figs, almond paste, and soil. The nose was 98+ quality.

In the mouth, this was ripe with great balance and refinement. It had rounded tannin, a silky texture, firm acidity, and great length.

My only quibble was that this wine was certain at its peak and further aging is likely to be detrimental rather than developmental. Enjoy (now)!

opened just before serving, without decanting. Unfortunately served too warm by the sommelier. Madeira-like, very savory, nutty, with some desiccated coconut.

Plenty alive with prefect provenance from Bern's frigid cellar, this was really quite lovely. Deep but delicate, with red fruits, dried flowers, and herbs with a dash of acidity. Certainly at peak or perhaps a touch past it, but not even remotely tired. This was really charming and surprised to the upside.

i tasted this wine around 1998 while in grad school with a friend's dad who was a wine collector. we had a terrific meal, and many delicious wines, but this was the best... and by memory one of the best wines i've ever had. of course, i don't remember the details and my palate was less mature then, but i do remember this wine to this day. i saved the label all these years, and keep it in my cellar. i didn't know until recently that it was essentially a DRC. just a fun memory to share.

This was easily one of the top wines of the night. It had such a pretty, limpid, rose/pink color, a la 1969! The wine was fine textured and gorgeous to behold, and even better to drink. The red fruit was so subtle showing tart strawberry, and sweet red cherry. It had such pretty and lightly, perfumed baking spices, that went so well with the fine, tart, and lovely fruit. This is a perfectly textured, perfectly tasting, and perfectly drinking, fully resolved RSV. (98)

2018 Villa d’Este Wine Symposium – Kelly, RJ, Justin and Kevin's excellent adventure; 11/7/2018-11/11/2018 (Villa D’este, Lake Como): Remarkably intense and complex nose displaying deeply toned concentrated pure black fruit, lovely sous bois, a hint of soy and black truffle, grilled cep, Vosne spice, Chinese medicine and earth. Perfectly integrated palate, nicely concentrated pure black fruit, remarkably dense yet silky and polished, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, no noticeable tannins and a long concentrated black fruit driven finish with Chinese medicine and soy at the end. It shows more concentrated fruit than the 80s but not as clean and precise. This has reached the secondary peak. If cellared properly, this can easily last a few more decades but will not improve.

No-doubter Burgundy of the night. A textbook RSV with those spice-bazaar aromatics - can't keep your nose out of the glass. I have heard complaints for years that the '69 vintage is starting to crack up, but there is not even a hint of that here. The fruit is still sweet and luscious, and with a deep, dark pitch. Cinnamon and pure black pinot fruit, with an exceptionally refined texture, just like RSV should be. Side note: I have seen bottles of this floating around from time to time (although none in as pristine a shape as this one was), and had always assumed it's from the old Domaine Marey-Monge before the lease to DRC. But there is a neck label on this from the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti with Henri de Villaine's signature stating, "Charge de l'exploitation du Domaine Marey-Monge 'Romanee-St-Vivant', je certife qu'il a ete recolte en 1969, 15.493 bouteilles numerotes de 1 a 15.493." So this would appear to be a stealth DRC RSV after all. Our bottle was number 005544.

RSV 71 - its beautiful how the RSV ages gracefully with an amazing bouquet of dried roses, oxidated fruits on the nose, good spices. The palate is fine, delicate, with an incredible integrity in the palate, good roundness with this oxidized fruits

With Club des Vingt, alongside the 1955 and the 1985 DRC. This was the marginal preference of most of those present, although to me the 1955 was equally beautiful. Still vigorous. Still holding beautiful cherry fruit on nose with lovely bottle complexity. Very intense on palate, with tannins largely dissipated but a lovely harmony and a very long finish. About as great a Burgundy as I can remember.

Wow. I was not disappointed. Always a bit nervous when pulling the corks on these older wines. The cork was soaked, black. But we scored a hit. Totally tertiary with beautiful autumnal notes. Great depth and mid palate. Rich, complex, nice fruit and a long, long sweet finish.

Red brick color. Nose of tea, with pronounced savoury aromas. Sweet and subdued mouthfeel, with a gentle palate showing wisps of fruit flavors, wood and stone. Like a graceful and elegant old lady, this had an understated charm. Still a pleasure to drink after 42 years, this is an amazing wine.
