3 hours in a decanter (2 bottles) then drank over the next 7 hours. Very pretty nose of spice, tar, violets and cherry. Pallet of cherry, leather, licorice minerals and a touch of tar. Great mouthfeel and long finish. Of the 6 different reds, 2013 dunn Napa Valley, 2016 torbreck the descendent, 2008 circa cab franc, 2014 Pontet-Canet and 1995 Pontet-Canet, this was the overwhelming choice as wotn by our group. I initially, also liked this the best but buy the end of the evening I thought the dunn had caught up and it was a toss up. This is still young and changed tremendously from opening sip to 3 hours later so if you pop a bottle be sure to give it lots of air. Highly recommend.

2019 Barolo Tasting (K&L): Very plush, very fruity, and very approachable. Clearly modern, especially in contrast with the 2019 Azelia Bricco Fiasco.

We decided to open this to honour Enrico Scavino who passed away late February 2024.

Incredibly fresh; young. Light on its feet. Liquorice, iodine, leather, fennel, on the nose. Beautiful long finish. The first of 6 bottles, plus we have a 6 bottle case of the Bric del Fiasc from the same vintage. One or two a year for the next 5 or 6 years.

A great Barolo.

One of my favourite Barolos, partly, I confess, for the 'Fiasc' in the name - it reminds me of my life. Indeed, it is from the Fiasco cru, which is even better.

Made as a distinct wine since 1978, it is also the house favourite. Note that word - is it better than the Annunziata, or the Cannubi? I think the case can be made, but it is sort of irrelevant because it is the wine that I also like best.

The tannins in this wine are sandy and fine and there is a reason I write about them ahead of the delicate and glorious fruit - they are to me a thing of genuine, rugged beauty and I can't get enough of them. The fruit is all glace cherry, tar and rose petals and some jube. Exquisite. The overall impression has me putting on Manfred Mann's Earth Band's ethereal song 'You are, I am'. Like the wine, I never want this song to end. The descending 6 note motif so wonderfully expresses the melancholy and joy that meet in so many things, including finishing a glass of this.

This wine is comfortably in the outstanding category. Perhaps the finish could maintain intensity for a moment longer, he asks, scratching about for reasons to not give it the ridiculous score that he wants to give it.

I would exercise caution in ascribing oak to Barolo. Those days are long gone. The tannins can mislead, giving the wine an impression of oak, were it another grape variety. Scavino at this time had long given up use of new oak in any significant way. At this time, he was down to about 15% new oak barriques for a year. The real key to the wine lies in its soil (sandier than any other adjacent site) and the way they manage extraction and ferment. They are also rigorous in the vineyard, making several green passes and then hand sorting when picked.

A monster in scale and structure (still). Ruby color. Nose a bit shy, red fruited with light cedar undertones. Palate is large scaled with big coarse tannins that turn a bit austere in the finish. Has a nice reframing menthol note though. Very dry finish—seems more like wood tannins but who knows. Drink or hold—may still use some time. Not sure the style is for me.

Much improved on night 2. Oak notes integrated and the texture smoothed out. Much less angular. Bumped to 92 from 90.

From a half bottle, decanted for 3-4h, really needed it. Now, after quite some time, it shows the usual perfumy nose and bright red fruit with cheeky tannins and acidity, otherwise consistent with my previous notes. 91/92

Well-balanced, medium smoked tannins. Dominant cherry fruit, secondary leather taste. Drink best with food. Agree with others, that it will evolve further for the next five years.

Tasted at Paolo Scavino

Andrea, the marketing Director hosted my family for a private tasting of the 2020 vintage. This was the last pour and was served blind. We knew it was a scavino wine, i guessed pre 2010 and post 2000.

As it had been open 24 hours, it was full, well rounded without any harsh edges. A pure delight and shining example of the skill and work the winery puts into their wines. It also serves as a gentle reminder to age these bottles as a wonderful wine experience awaits!

Saturated black cherry on the nose along with blackberry, black currant, dried sage, licorice, and black pepper. Medium bodied and a smooth-ish mouthfeel with modest acid and a modest amount of fine grained tannin. It's pleasant enough but watery and a bit thin in the mid palate. Flavors include a briar patch of berries, tar, licorice, dried sage, green bell pepper, and black pepper. It's all fine and dandy, but lacks personality and any amount of special pop. The longer this sits out, the more watery it gets. Don't age any longer.

I actually found this overly fruity and extracted, so am surprised to hear that they limit maceration in order to avoid over-extraction. Not my style of wine in any case - too ripe and fruit-forward, like a Nebbiolo from the Rhone Valley.

2016 Paolo Scavino Barolo Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata

Nebbiolo more

3/25/2024 - thesternowl wrote: 95 points

The Scavino family’s holdings in the Rocche dell’Annuziata MGA have always been quite special and at Paolo Scavino, it’s bottled as a Riserva. This 2016 was popped and poured and enjoyed over a several hour period. It pours a deep ruby with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with powerful notes of dark cherry, red roses, some tar, dried herbs, gentle warm spices and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with high tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. There’s wonderful concentration and the finish is grippy, long and delicious. As far as Riserva’s go, this is a winner. And, because this is a 2016, you can drink now (with some patience) if you wanna enjoy in its relative youth but this will undoubtedly last for decades.

Over the last 70+ years, Enrico Scavino was a force behind the family’s expansion in the Barolo region. And while he was never been shy about innovation (Enrico was one of the “Barolo Boys” after all), he was a bit more judicious with his use of new French oak; careful to ensure each vineyard’s story was being told. Increasingly, there has been an even greater lean towards a more traditional touch with less time spent in barrique (very little of it new) and more time spent in botti. And while the quality has never really been an argument, the results are evident in the glass and I’ve been impressed with the wine of the last several years. But I digress, the real news is that Enrico passed away in late February which means Piemonte has lost yet another legend.

Opened, allowed to warm up, and served. Medium body, solid ruby. Very floral nose with some licorice and menthol. Nice acidity and balance - lithe and aging well. The nose is quite distinct and classy. Decent fruit and not overly dense. Not as good on day two so I would suggest this is fairly mature at present.

Wonderful. Medium red color with some brown typical of Nebbiolo just starting to show its age. Well integrated tannins, and 15 year old Barolo should have some tannins. Dried red cherry, spice, and leather. Drink now to 2030.

Young, well made and pleasant.
Spicy semimature nose, some wood, orange peel, mushrooms, cherries and herbs.
Sour berries with sweeter cherries, some smoked wood.
Overall a fine Barolo in a good window.
