2007 R Wines Chateau Chateau Skulls

South Eastern Grenache Blend, Grenache more

1/22/2018 - Mossrose wrote: 91 points

Kept open and tasted over 6 days. Dark purple color. Interesting 60-40 blend of Grenache and Mourvedre with a surprisingly low 14% alcohol for an Australian Rhone blend, that also has neither heaviness, detached sweetness, nor alcoholic burn. Features an excellent balance of refreshing acidity and drying tannin. At 11 years old, nicely rounded and integrated, still has ample black raspberry and blackberry fruit, and shows no sign of oxidation or thinness.

A nose of some muted fruit and some spice, dark brickish in color. A medium to full bodied red, with blueberry, black cherry, some smoke and spic eon finish, a bit past prime but very smooth, drink now, cool label. www.winelx.com

Brought this to Burlamacco Ristorante (East Coast) for dinner with my wine mates. Theme of the evening: Wines from Chris Ringland. Bottle was decanted for 6 hours prior to consumption.

Tasting this wine is like revisiting a familiar old friend.

Purplish red in colour with a sharp nose, filled it mouldy, musky old stuff. Dried tea with black coffee, coupled with dried raisins. The spices are less pronounced and prominent.

Some cream and vanilla in the finish.

Brick red in colour with a perfumed nose filled with rambutans and rich lychees. Resembles a fine ruby port at some point.

On the palate the are some notes of bark, fresh pine, sweet syrup and tree sap texture with fine carpet linens.

Close thy eyes and imagine sipping on an aged scotch whiskey.

There’s room in the wine multiverse for old school Barossa Shiraz from a master.

4 hours in the decanter and while there’s development Theres no sign of collapse.

Nose. There’s definitely an initial hit of spirit, but then past that so much going on. Leather, earth, roasted spices and then black fruits (cherry, blackberry etc)

On the palate this wine is rich and porty but in the best way. There’s definitely a touch of alcohol and very rich fruit bordering on the sweet and jammy. But what holds this back is balance. There’s a menthol freshness and the sweetness is just on the right side of excess. But then the complexity is everything a monster red wine should be. A beautiful alchemy of earth, roasted spices, tobacco and leather, merged with black cherry kirsch, blackberry and raisins.

It’s not for everyone and it’s definitely not trendy and at 17.2% alcohol it’s not a midweek wine. But it’s aging so well for a blockbuster red and is testament to what a phenomenal wine maker Chris Ringland is. Bravo! And Hic!

Very interesting wine, big black dark fruit, not hot at all. Wine evolved significantly over a three hour dinner. And not sure for the better.

Upon opening very impressive, deliciously forward with dark fruit but not in an overpowering way. Actually restrained and sophisticated And not hot at all especially considering the 16.3% alcohol. The fruit was very enjoyable, a bit sweet but again not overpowering in any way. As the evening went on, the wine quieted down into an enjoyable but not especially memorable wine, did not have any telltale marks of a Shiraz by the time we were done.

I don’t understand the scores in initially got that said it was a nice one. This came as part of a three pack, two more to go. I think if you have any, probably time to drink up.

Skulls 2018 Australian shiraz has one of the coolest labels I have ever seen. Got this as a tip from a happy tree trimming customer. This velvety wine smells like jam, but has complexity. There are palate notes of chocolate, smokiness, spice, and a touch of eucalyptus to go along with the notes of dark fruit. It is not as fruit forward as it could be due to the age, but it is there. And the smoothness of it makes up for that. Don't say no if you get a chance to try this!

Recall trying this around the time it was released and it being somewhat of a fruit bomb, unbalanced, with no complexity. Happened upon a bottle in a small wine shop in a back cubby - basically been on its side on the floor for the past decade plus. Bought it for fun and surprisingly this one turned out better than it started life from my memory. Mellowed fruit with complexity and a lengthy finish. Not exceptional but far better than expected.

Appearance: Bright and clear, the wine is of deep ruby colour, with fading rims and legs.
Nose: Clean, with pronounced intensity aromas of black fruit of blackberry, cassis, dark plum and bilberry, dried fruit of prune, oak notes of toast, kernel notes of coffee and chocolate, mineral notes of earth, pungent spice of liquorice, sweet spice of clove, hints of maturity notes of savory. The wine is developing.
Palate: Dry with medium (+) acidity, the wine has medium (+) tannin of ripe and silky texture, high alcohol, full body and exhibiting pronounced intensity of flavours of black fruit of cassis, blackberry and dark cherries, dried fruit of prune, oak notes of toast, kernel notes of chocolate, pungent spice of liquorice, herbal notes of eucalyptus. The wine has a long finish.
Conclusion: Outstanding quality Australian Shiraz with a very strong nose showing great complexity, with plenty of ripe black fruit, French oak and a wide range of earthy, spicy and chocolate characters. The palate is powerful, with good acidity and tannin, and great concentration of flavours, finishing with an exceptional long finish. It is ready to drink now and can further develop for another 5-7 years.

Deep color, strawberry nose.
Plenty of black cherry on the palate with little to no tannins.
Virtually no acidity with a flat but unoffensive finish.
Showing its age, as it lacks fruit character and depth.
Still, a decent Shiraz that has aged fairly well.

I completely concur with the assessments by DANNYKOZ and Jay Miller for the WA. This fine was fantastic upon opening and was screaming good at about 30 minutes from there on out. A fantastic nose of scorched earth, blackberries and blueberries leading to a balanced full-bodied palate with an awesome finish. The wine definitely lived up to the amazing packaging and hype. Hats off to Chris on this great wine.

Of all the wines I’ve laid down, this lived up to the price and commitment of a decade and a half of storage. This had everything I could want. Fruit bomb, for sure, like a good new world wine. It also had a hint of eucalyptus like my favorite Rhône’s. Deep, layered fruit with sweet, soft tannins, perfectly controlled alcohol heat and depth for days. Perhaps my favorite wine in recent memory. EPIC.

If you don't like Aussie wines that were high in alcohol, over-the-top fruit, etc., just give them time. This wine has settled into a much more sophisticated offering as it reaches the end of its drinking range. Still has nice fruit, but now it goes much better with food than it did 12 or 13 years ago.

No longer great, but still quite drinkable, way beyond the 2016 date provided by the community. A little cough syrup at first, but ultimately still very drinkable with typical strong licorice flavors, but pretty balanced over three nights.
