2015 Stag's Hollow Syrah Renaissance Amalia Vineyard

Intensely smoky and very concentrated. I almost wondered if this was some Okanagan smoke taint - it was that intense. Still very enjoyable but overshadowed by the smokiness.

I thought this bottle may be past its prime but now looking at my prop notes it may simply be that the wine was never that good. Perhaps a bad vintage because I recall typically enjoying the Renaissance Merlot but it seems out of balance with too much heat and not enough fruit.

Oddly, I found this a bit flowery and bitter at the same time. Not quite to my liking but it's trying to be interesting, so points for that. Served with seared scallops.

2018 Stag's Hollow Cachet No. 05

Okanagan Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/20/2023 - hutchbr Likes this wine: 92 points

The Cachet line from Stags Hollow is truly one of my favourite wines from the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia. I first tried this wine maybe 15 years ago and even though it was a bit pricey for me I gave it a go. It did not disappoint then and certainly not today either. The Cachet #5 is what I had today and paired with the King of Steaks. SUPERB! At $85 it's not cheap but we'll worth it.

Hint of smoke and tobacco on the nose. Black cherry as well.
Decanted minimum 1 hour. First impression was good with black cherry, blackberry with very little tannins.
Next up paired with T-bone and peppercorn sauce. Faired well and would do it again.
Will try again at a 3 year window instead of 5 to see if tannins a present.
Not complex enough to give a 90+ rating but still very good and recommended.

Ok bottle but not worth the price, too much acidity in order to really enjoy the flavors, shallow depth of aromas, quite short mouthfeel. Not bad for a daily table wine but needs to be priced appropriately

2018 Stag's Hollow Syrah Renaissance Amalia Vineyard

I expected a 2 hr decant or more to just open it up after trying their very tight entry level syrah a few months ago. Instead I decanted and was immediately enjoyable, it continued to evolve over the next couple hours beautifully.

Nose is a fragrant yet delicate balance between cherries, blueberries and violet. Nose reminds me a lot of US Zinfandels similar to a favourite of mine, Carlisle. Palate is smooth and savory with black fruits, bacon fat, leather and dark chocolate. Medium, peppery finish with some bright acidity and balanced tannins. Gismondi recommended aging it for a while but it's in a very nice place right now. I'll be drinking my second soon and wishing I had a 3rd!

Blackberry and cranberry with a hint of anise, moderate acidity. Needed a bit of time in glass for the tannins to mellow, but nothing overwhelming and went great with pizza.

Once again, Stag’s Hollow is showing off its skills to grow European grape varietals. After Albarino, Teroldego and Tempranillo, they are now mastering Dolcetto (originally from Piedmont, Italy) like no others in Canada. Bright, fresh, earthy and extremely versatile, this is the Italian version of the French Beaujolais with their Gamay. Expressing bright red fruits like cherry, cranberry, raspberry mixed with a great deal of light spice at the end, this wine can be your best friend when it comes the time to pair it with food.
