Opulence with a 6 hours Decant.

Harmoniously dense Opulent nose of all the fruits and minerals you can think of. Balanced of red fruit and black fruit swinging back and forth between minerals inside the mouth. Closed off at first then opens wonderfully. I don't recommend touching a bottle until 2029 or 3030 as it was rather closed off in the beginning.

Second day of this bottle Bordeaux and dark chocolate dominance.

Fairest Creatures and Where to Find Them (K&L Wine Merchant - Redwood City): Nose: Quiet, dark blue fruits, brisk passing by of earth, and light twigs.

Palate: Surprisingly fresh dark red and black fruits, a hint of bright blueberries, savory minerals, and deep gentle earth. Love the freshness here. There is a bit of heat on the midpalate but that might be due to youth. Went quite well with an aged rib eye, as it took away any kinda harshness in the wine.

At this age, protein will help. This bottling tonight reminded me of a sprinter that tripped after the starting pistol in a track and field competition. It took some time to get back up and shake it off, but it still performed well. Don’t open yet, give it ~2-4 years before trying one. I felt like this wasn't showing its true colors just yet. 96-97+

Mirror Mirror on Wall, who's the Fairest of them All? (KLWines and Flemings): Thank you Marvin (@wineburrowingwombat). Had at Flemings after the Fairest Creature Tasting. Was super shocked that WBW would bring something like this for dinner. Lovely wine! HUGE! Will also need time to mellow out. Very big, powerful, masculine, dark, brooding. Had with a prime Rib Eye with just salt and pepper. No frills dinner and awesome with the Tusk. Probably the best restaurant steak I had in some time. Cooked perfectly med rare and perfectly seasoned. Shared a pour with Fleming's Ops Director, who also in his past, managed the Levi Stadium, York Family wine program. He was gracious enough to give comp us a pork belly appetizer which just paired beautifully with the Tusk as well.

Nose: [58°-60°] A brooding concentration of blackberries with a quiet and subtle ripeness, a bit of fresh blueberries, earthen oak, moss, and hints of dark chocolate. Purple and black flowers and if they were somehow sweet.

Palate: [58°-60°] Brooding black fruits, tons of clean and generous fruit without being heavy or weighty. Deep and damp earth, spiced oak, and something similar to a light, creamy coffee if it had a dob of rich fruit in it. Finishes with black and bitter minerals, and steeped tea. A long finish at that, with a dark graphite note that slowly surfaces on the finish.

Attributes: Clear, dark ruby, almost black. Dry with medium to medium-plus amounts of fine tannin. Medium-plus body with medium acidity (the acidity is well integrated if it's higher). Great finish of at least 20-22 seconds.

Thoughts: So giving and pleasurable while not tiring on the palate. I was constantly going back for a small, sip non-stop (terrible habit). Oozing with flavor from start to end, and manages to squeeze out every bit flavor on the finish. The generous profile does not waver over the course of emptying the bottle. Side note: if you fancy classic Napas or bdx style cabs, this won't butter your croissant. Drinking great now, and will hold well for years to come. Drink now through another handful of years.

Happy new year, everybody!

Serving notes: Bordeaux glass. Slow-ox'ed at cellar temp ~54° and consumed over 7 hours. Recommend serving ~56°-60°. Decant only as needed.

Really outstanding wine. Drinking beautifully right now, classic cabernet qualities that are all in perfect harmony. The fruit is a marvel to behold - so pure, so clean.
No rush on drinking this, but I would not put this at the back of the cellar - too much joy in drinking now.
Bottles like this are what make this hobby fun (and not just expensive)

Nose: [59°] Scents of white flowers, lightly ripe black fruits, prickly brambles and tree bark. Notes of river stones get elevated from the strong boozy-ness, making the mineral scents quite sharp.

Palate: [64°] Pure flavors of deep earth, black lightly ripe fruits, dark oak with a firm spice, and a finish of dark graphite with some savoriness. Stubborn heat on the mid to end palate.

Attributes: Dark medium ruby. Dry with medium-plus amounts of grippy, chewy tannin. Medium to medium-plus body with medium to medium-plus acidity. Good finish of at least 18-20 seconds.

Thoughts: Overflowing with unrestrained power, this thing still needs time to resolve, and a lot of it. Like our sun in the heavens, this thing is emitting solar flares uncontrollably. I was hoping this would maybe be a bit more resolved by now but this is still acting like an immature juvenile. And like some of those degenerates, you can't tell what kind of future it has but can only hope they have a better one. Gonna hope for the best and keep telling myself, "It's just a phase.."

Serving notes: Bordeaux glass. Served one glass and emptied bottle into a decanter at cellar temp ~54° and consumed over 9.5 hours. Recommend serving ~56°-58° and decant as needed. As of this date, don't open yet, just cellar away for another 4-5 years (yes, a reset of the waiting game from my last post two years ago).

The wine is drinking beautifully now as it has started to evolve and open up. Beautiful structure with powdery tannins and mouthfeel gives way to dark fruits, secondary flavors of smoky notes, chocolate and mineral/earth. Beautiful wine.

This was the real deal. Winemaker aside I had this beautifully packaged wine 750ml (of which I also have a magnum) and it was as good a wine as I have had. Not the best but right there. Blueberry, iron and tobacco leaf.

My first experience with Tusk and it lived up to expectations. Elegant and as smooth as any wine I have enjoyed. I rated on par with 2012 Dana Helms, which was a bit richer. Nice problem to ponder.

A few days in Napa with fellow CT'r Cristal2000: Huh. This was… initially pretty perplexing. Round and uber-plush. Displayed pretty yummy black and blue fruit that was indeed tasty, but lacked the extra frame and tension to keep things moving and in full focus. This was from Coravin and wasn’t given any air. I mention this because I tapped the bottle five days later again and gave it a bunch of air. Surprisingly, it gained better direction and energy as it unwound. It doesn’t carry the concentration, depth, and overall structure of other vintages (which is something I have experienced in other 2014s – making that vintage a good-not-superb vintage in Napa for me overall). It’s a little hard to know what to do here, but for those holding bottles, I’d continue to do so. Call it a little awkward now. Call it making excuses for a wine that should be performing well above what it did, on the first night especially. Call it a modern of modern wines to the point that I should expect this kind of behavior at certain stages of evolution. However you slice it, this particular bottle was not in any mood to be on stage.

Note: I've been milking this bottle via Coravin a few times now and it continues to improve each time, especially with more and more air, which gives me a cautious sigh of relief that there is more potential lurking. Still, I do think 2014 is not as comparatively strong as others with this producer.

This was a very good bottle of wine. I could tell that Melka is the winemaker as it's his style. It was opened 1 hour prior to dinner, it did not need a decant. Nicely built, very smooth and full of flavor.

I agree with Agelvis's review from their 2016. There is nothing special going on with to warrant the high price of admission. We had 2 other bottles that were much cheaper (not hard to do) and better.

95-96 points. Rating it 95 because of the high price point.

Bordeaux tasting with some Napa outsiders (The Embrace of Silence): Aromas of black fruits, deep and rich earth and more brooding fruits.

The palate showed similar notes from the nose of rich, black earth, matching black fruits, some tar (love this) and wonderfully bitter minerals that plays so well with the dark fruits.

Packed with tons of fruit and some tailing heat but all this just told me it needed some air time. This was opened at the end of the night which made me want to sleep over but I didn't wanna be "that guy." 96+

Decant for 2-5 hours and taste along to see when, or if, it really settles in and develop further. Another couple of years in the cellar would also do.

Bordeaux tasting - with a few pirates: Opened at the end of the evening, which is almost always a mistake in terms of service, the Tusk wasn’t the total blowout like the SQN mighty Z cocktail, but it was clearly in need of about 3-5++ hours of decanting. The jam factor was prevalent, as was the booze. It displayed more brash power and angularity than the Materium, which had better contours but was syrupier and more saturated.

I know this wine is polarizing, and there are those who have written this producer off completely in search of more “refined” animals (I can’t necessarily blame anyone there, as I have had a wandering eye in this regard as well), but it’s a Melka Napa Cab type of experience that just needs more time, in my opinion. I wasn’t exactly singing the praises of this wine and its performance that night, but I can at least blame some of that on my PnP delivery of it. No excuses, however. So ya, it was too boozy for me at the time and should be a better showstopper with better service. Strong structure. Strong fruit. Finesse is missing here. I liked this better in 2019 (but again, service was much better then). I do wonder what sort of longevity this kind of wine has. I’ll hold remaining bottles for at least three more years. We shall see if it implodes or calms down.

Wine: the Gathering Old World, Bordeaux (Château de Chris et Melissa): Had this after a gluttonous night of tasting and drinking BDX. CSIMM is too generous. This wine was gobbled up fairly quickly right at the end of the evening, but not to my surprise as a huge chunk of the people left that evening are “Napa” palates. This was my jam, no pun intended. This was not as fruit driven as the 19 Materium that was slipped into the middle of a BDX tasting but it was wine that reminded us of why we love Napa. Lots of fruit and bordering on jammy, this may have shown better on another day and no after having so many wines from across the pond. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this wine.

Rare that I pour out a glass of wine that's not totally corked or off in some way. I fundamentally do not understand why anyone could be hoodwinked by this plonk. The price point and the gross manipulation of fruit here is downright criminal.

Small Tusk tasting with the proprietor (Napa Grill (Zurich)): Small Tusk tasting with co-founder Tim Martin. As Tim explained, they kept this vintage about 3 months longer in barrel than usual to add structure and used reserve wine. That really worked out well in my view.

Tasting note:
A cooler fruit profile, with a more earthy aroma profile, adding leather and a bit of tobacco to the otherwise minty (spearmint) and herbal layers. The fruit was more red in nature and you’ll also find some sweet spices and vanilla. In view of the vintage, there was surprising depth and structure. Not as layered or complex as the 2012, but no doubt one of the best 2017s from Napa to date for me.

Small Tusk tasting with the proprietor (Napa Grill (Zurich)): Small Tusk tasting with co-founder Tim Martin. The L’Orange is around 60% Cab with the rest split into Franc and PV. Only around 120 cases made.

Tasting note:
Dark cherry, black currant, vanilla, baking spice, barnyard, herbs, iodine and elements of mint. Incredibly versatile, constantly evolving and changing in the glass. Compared to the Tusks Estates, this added a more Bordeaux-like, earthy character. The palate is youthful and fresh, in good balance even if still a bit wild. A very present mid-palate structure. This was fantastic and toe to toe with Tusk 2012 for the wine of the night. Add another few years of bottle age and the L’Orange would probably surpass the Estate wine.

Small Tusk tasting with the proprietor (Napa Grill (Zurich)): Small Tusk tasting with co-founder Tim Martin. Ripe and perfectly extracted fruit of red and black currant. An array of sweet notes of gingerbread, vanilla, liquorish, baking species. Notes of ash and graphite add mineral complexity. With aeration new aromas of milk chocolate and a distinctly herbal dimension of thyme and rosemary emerge. Great tension on the palate with an expansive character from attack into the finish. Fresh acidity and perfectly integrated tannin, perceptible if you actively look for it, but otherwise humbly in the background. This has come quite some way since my first encounter 3 years ago and I fully agree with Tim’s statement that the drinking window for this is now wide open. But mind you this is still entirely in a primary stage with no aging notes yet and if you can resist it’s probably best to hold back on this for another 5+ years.

2015 Tusk capped off the family vacation to Jackson Hole.

At PNP this wine has a rush of blueberry pie filling which reminded me Odette or Realm Moon Racer. A bit of chocolate and stone creeps in the mix (think LPV). If you've had Lail J Daniel Cuvee these bottlings favor each other IMO. Very Melka. Plush & silky without rolling over into the realm of jammy.

Drink or hold.
