The nose and palate have notes of red cherry and red currant but also some black currant. No evidence of oak. The palate is dry, with med + acidity, med tannins and high alcohol (15%). Overall med + body and med + flavor intensity but only med length. This is a good to very good wine, which is drinking well now and not likely to improve with further aging. 50% Grenache and 50% Mazuelo (Carignan). At $23, it's actually a pretty good QPR and value for a Priorat. |

9/8/2018 - mjwstickings Likes this wine: 90 pointsAt a whopping 15.5% ABV, there's no denying that this Priorat is one powerful wine. And it's not just the alcohol. Both the colour and texture are rich and dense. But while the fruit -- ripe blackberry, dark cherry -- is similarly rich and dense, and while there's power in the aromas and flavours generally, it's Priorat terroir and prevails here, balance triumphing over sheer power, and that's just what so characterizes Priorat wine. There may not be exceptional complexity here, as the fruit is only really complemented by a light meaty note, some brown spice, and mocha, but the balance is provided by lively acidity that streaks across the palate and a mineral backbone derived from Priorat's llicorella soil, the latter very much the stamp that defines Priorat wine. (The acidity turns excessively fierce by the second day, nearly toppling the balancing act but also stressing the aging potential.) There could be more here -- the power isn't really matched by profundity -- but the balance and authenticity push this to a 90, while the value ($20 in Ontario) for a Priorat of this quality is superb. |
