1/29/2024 - costacasa Likes this wine: 91 pointsThis is so much better than the average Zin (especially at this price point). Surprised that after 10+ years of cellaring, this Zin is still bursting with flavors....reminds me of the scene in "Alien" when the alien bursts out of John Hurts chest...Pour a glass of this wine and get ready for that burst of flavor...hopefully no chest wounds. |

2017 Vino Noceto Sangiovese AX-1Amador County more |
12/26/2023 - oakville72 Likes this wine: 92 pointsA very round, complete Sangiovese, modeled on Brunello di Montalcino, drinkable now. At this point, the flavors are a battle between the fruit, oak and alcohol to see which emerges dominant. Yet I know the three will come together in a few years to yield something greater than the components. There is an intriguing grapiness that is unlike Sangiovese, which makes me think that a touch of Aglianico, which Noceto also produces, has been added to the cuvée. If there's a fault, it's that the wine is a tad soft, unlike traditional Brunellos. Yet the fruit + alcohol + modest tannins should keep it going for a while. |

2019 Vino Noceto Mistura 180° SelectionCalifornia Shenandoah Valley Red Blend more |
12/20/2023 - oakville72 Likes this wine: 91 pointsDeep olallieberry red. Slightly rustic, earthy nose, but in a sophisticated way. A wine that hits the tongue with a blast of acidity, very different from Noceto's Sangioveses, which tend to be soft. A blend of Sangiovese, Teroldego, Barbera, Alicante Bouschet and Aglianico, but it's a challenge to determine which dominates: certainly not Sangiovese, perhaps Barbera? In the old days — 50 and more years ago — this blend would have been called "Dago Red", though this iteration is very modern. Instead of being fermented and aged in redwood tanks, it shows stainless steel fermentation and aging in oak barrels. Because of the high acidity, fruit and tannins, I see a long life ahead. |

12/19/2023 - oakville72 Likes this wine: 91 pointsMedium red. Quite perfumed with cherry Sangiovese fruit accented by oak. This is so typical of Noceto Sangioveses: not blockbuster but full of plum-cherry fruit. In their reservas, there is a lot of splintery, sweet-vanilla oak character. I really like this wine, but I keep thinking: Where is the acid zip that one would find from top Tuscan Sangioveses? The challenge for Noceto, I think, is the climate. When Jim and Suzy Gullett established the vineyard, it looked like a great location to grow Sangiovese. But today, given climate change, the wines turn out to be rather soft. While this appeals to many U.S. wine drinkers, as a europhile I prefer a touch more zip. |

2020 Vino Noceto Teroldego Noce di Noce ClarksburgAmador County more |
12/10/2023 - oakville72 Likes this wine: 91 pointsDeep blue-crimson color. Spice and blackberry fruit leap out of the glass. A hint of oak and light tannins complete the flavors. In the Trentino-Alto Adige, Teroldego is usually vinted to make a lighter, early drinking red. But this one is a keeper. The AVA is Clarksburg, which is a relatively warm (Region 3) area in California, tho its heat is modified by the Sacramento River Delta. I'm not a particular fan of Italian Teroldego, but this one is terrific! |

2018 Vino Noceto Aglianico Fumo E TerraCalifornia Shenandoah Valley more |
12/9/2023 - oakville72 Likes this wine: 92 pointsMedium-dark red. Pronounced vanilla (from oak) plus pepper, dried plums and berry preserves on the nose, all of which carry over to the taste. There is a slightly sweet flavor profile from both the oak and the fruit, modest acids and dusty tannins with an alcohol push in the finish. For those who don't mind the tannins, it is enjoyable now. Yet it will definitely keep for a decade, perhaps more. |

5/6/2023 - A6Rover Likes this wine: 95 pointsThis wine is singing right now -- and it confirms for me that Noceto does Sangiovese right yet doesn't get nearly enough credit for doing so. The wine is a beautiful garnet with just a little bricking, almost like a Barolo. The 14.2 ABV is almost indiscernible given how well balanced the wine is. The wine is supremely drinkable so I'm thinking maybe a little RS? Regardless, here is proof positive of the ability to make great CA Sangiovese. |

2021 Vino Noceto Trebbiano Shenandoah ValleyPlymouth more |
3/22/2023 - oakville72 Likes this wine: 89 pointsIf you are a Chardonnay-head you won't like Trebbiano as the two wines have vastly different flavor profiles. Trebbiano is the same grape as Ugni Blanc, the foundation of Cognac and Armagnac, assuming that this one is Trebbiano Toscano and not the other varietals that carry Trebbiano in their names. The wine is light yellow in color and is quite perfumed in a peachy-herbal way. It's medium-bodied with good acidity for a California white and finishes with dried-herb flavors and a hint of sweetness — a white made for food. |
