For the price is an extremley pleasant Kabinnet that delivers excellent with a spicy meal. Perfect balance between acidity and sweetness as a Riesling from the Mosel should be.

Ye Olde Riesling Dinner (SDK - Castro): There is this lovely, honeyed note on the nose (with some petrol) while it has an elegant lightness on the palate. It tastes more like a Spatlese with a gentle (but sufficient) acidity balanced with an orange-honeyed sweetness. I did not get any hint of botrytis. I was told that AP #9 was the “clean” auslese and that Zilliken produces other Auslese APs that have a heavier botrytis influence.

Ye Olde Rieslings: Thrilling acidity and crystalline raciness, with orange peel, peaches and cream, and a touch more petrol and secondary notes than a bottle 4 years ago. Lots of intensity, but perhaps just a touch less body than the 01's. Love this lighter style of auslese.

Super! Apricots, canned peaches, straw in the barn, and a hint of petrol. Peaches, dried apricots and candied lemon tastes. Super balance, with good supporting acid and clean pure finish that goes a long time. Can age another ten, at least.

Absolutely pure Mosel fruit! This is excactly what you want to drink at the terrace or the Cabin on vacay times, uncomplicated and just bloody delicious!
Pineapple, red sweet Apples, elderflower, kumquat, acacia honey, white peach, honey melon and a beautiful, zingy acidity. You will NOT be dissapointed and perfect to asian food :)

A touch plumper than many 2021 Trockens. Very much driven by fruit (lime marmalade, apricot), with a touch of kerosene and smokey almond developing as it warms up and opens. Medium + acidity. Finish could be longer but there is a good density of flavour here.

Stevie W supplied for Indian dinner in NYC last week with the wives. Notes of apricot and honeysuckle on the nose. Sweeter than expected for a spatlese. Weighty, low to medium acidity, good minerality and attractive petrol notes. Seemed a bit young to me

Nose: subtle, mineral sure, but some peachy and almost orangey fruit too

Palate: full (due in part to sugar), absolutely perfectly balanced between sugar and acid, honey dripping ripe peaches and pears 🤤. Rich, but not heavy. Orange notes again, not had those in a Riesling before!

Day 2: waxy mandarin notes, really pure and luscious

The dill and petrol character can come off to some as uncomfortably similar to TCA but they are distinct. this wine has the full body of its ripeness but barely the sweetness of Kabinett, fully ready to drink now and in danger of losing its acid/sugar balance with further age. perfect now

First bottle since 2021. This bottle is also showing very well with a clean nose of lychee, pear and citrus. On the palate good energy and an almost pearly mouthfeel. Just a hint of smoke (lapsang tea) and granite pebbles. medium+ lenght.

Opened many decades too early, because I saw a raised capsule and slightly raised cork and worried this may be a leaker. Silly me, this wine will almost certainly outlive me. This is a jawdroppingly beautiful Auslese. Incredibly clear, fresh fruit tinged with bright floral notes, and lighter honeyed and faintly herbal accents, so complex and fresh, with a round, silky texture and lifted by bright acids. Impeccable balance. The sense of purity and clarity here are amazing - whatever botrytis is here is incredibly clean, this really feels like an Auslese to drink at the table rather than a big dessert wine trying to be a baby BA/TBA. Just an outstanding (half) bottle of wine.

[Pop and pour. Half bottle with Salil.] Gorgeous nose of sweet citrus. Rich and fresh in the mouth with crisp acidity balancing the harmonious sweetness. An incredibly long finish of peaches, apricots and oranges. Expansive and gorgeous. Should be beautiful for at least another 20 years.
A week later: It is just stunning. Virtually unchanged after a week in the fridge.

Much as I found it and enjoyed it a few years ago.

So many other tasting notes are saying it has insufficient acid. Yet I perceive a truly delicious thread of limey acid through it, and was at one point asking myself, is this a bit too much acid? But that was only a moment. I think I am more sensitive to acid than many tasters, and don't like very acidic wines, like young South Australian rieslings that are too much for me. There certainly is acid there in substantial quantity, but it is nicely ripe. And then there's a note from a taster I respect, saying it is light for an auslese. Yet I perceive it as having the weighty ripeness of the year. I have had many lighter ausleses. Yes, there are weightier ones, but they come from Rheingau and Nahe, not usually the Mosel and Saar, the region of German wines I have drunk much the greatest quantity from.

I did find this wine disappointing when it was younger, sweet and simple, and maybe my sub-ideal storage conditions have helped move it along to a greater extent than other people. But the last bottle I opened was in 2020, and I don't find it much changed.

It is more tropical than a typical auslese, from that very hot 2003. But now we have had a number of hotter years, notably 2022, I wonder how they will come out? Or are the vineyard managers and winemakers better prepared for hot year wines and making something rather different?

Meanwhile, I found a parcel of the 2003 spatlese going very cheap a couple of years ago, and am still drinking, and I think that is still great.

What an awesome wine! Roasted pineapple with coconut/vanilla icecream. Golden colour, no ageing, at the beginning of its 20years plus lifecycle. Really perfect balance of a juicy acidity with exotic fruitiness and sweetness. Had it with grilled Pfälzer Saumagen and bread from Baasch bakery Wiltingen - perfect pairing.

1999 Zilliken Saarburger Rausch GK Auslese (02 00)
From a 375. A good amount of tartrate at the bottom of the bottle. Moderate + yellow. There’s a fantastic delicately smoky-petrol nose on top of candied lime, honey and overripe pears. The palate has the texture of warm jelly and still shows medium + sweetness and moderate acidity. I’m not sure this has much more upside - my gut says this vintage was overshadowed by 98 and 01 but has turned out better than people thought it would.

Third of four bottles, two years since last tasting. Even darker yellow now, deep bouquet of saffron, ripe yellow apples, faint sting of chili. Acidity seems to be winding down a bit but will keep last bottle for a while longer for reference.
