2005 Château Lanessan

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

Christmas roast beef dinner with family, where this wine shone. Acidic, playful red fruit, leather in the back tones, with light tannins on the finish, very elegant. This is bottle 6 of 12, the first of which I tasted in 2010. An opportunity to show my daughter what a St Julien-like wine is- she commented on the very bubbly front taste from the acid, where I mostly focus on the fruit to leather evolution in the mid taste, harmonious to the end. One of my favorite wines.

Upon opening the bottle, a wave of fruit smells. No problem with the cork at all. 2 hour decant. Taste- fresh fruit- raspberry, darker blackberry, then leather and graphite, a hint of oak. Where other wines use oak to provide structure, this beauty uses multi-threaded fruits, acidity, and soft tannin. A really lovely wine to drink right now.

Lively, balanced, tobacco, graphite, mostly subtle and hidden under light fruit. A very joyful wine. We were celebrating a family dinner at the end of the pandemic- a great way to drink my second to last bottle of this. Fabulous on a cool spring night.

We took this downstate to a living farm embedded in the cornfields, for a wonderful all-local Sunday lunch. And you know, this wine was perfect for that- hot day, fresh pork, homegrown tomatoes, rustic table, farm hands, good company, a laid back near-St Julian.

What a fantastic wine. Age had just improved, mellowed, made golden the edges of the grapefruit citrus wonder of this.
I bought these bottles at wine store being sold to Binnys- I took a flyer on a cheap price. What fantastic stuff. I think i
bought 7, should have bought a case. Ever since I've been looking for Haut-Bergey Blancs and just haven't seen them. Great wine, great seven year run of drinking them.

2010 Terra Blanca Syrah Arch Terrace

Red Mountain more

I really love Washington State Syrah. Or maybe it is Red Mountain Syarh. The Arch Terrace smelled of barnyard and flowers. The taste was lush, warm, and spicy: blackberries and black pepper. There is substantial oak around the fruit core. Second night was not as nice as the first.

2005 Château Potensac

Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/27/2017 - james_timothy wrote: NR

Decanted for an hour. The Potensac was mild, clear, and lively, with the characteristic leather and balance of good Bordeaux, with the nuance of flowers. It seemed... not special but it seemed of very high quality. Expanding on that a bit- the Potensac was clearly a wine I preferred over the nice Spanish bottle Denise brought over, and drunk second. But as I sipped the Potensac it seemed to recede into the background, unlike blockbusters that force one to pay attention to every taste, but also unlike the similarily well-mannered but much more interesting 2004 Château d'Armailhac we had last month. 5 more bottles in my cellar, this was the first we've tried.

Amazing how different this was than the balance and oak-backed strength of the 2012 Viña Falernia Carménère Antakari Reserva Carménère.
There was the subtle oak, nearly hidden by light laughing red fruit and a startling playful effervescence on the tongue.
The balance point was distant from that of the Viña Falernia: not close and solid but out on the tongue and light.
At first taste Denise asked- oh, what is this! I thought: this is something special. My third bottle over the last 7 years- definitely
improving, always enjoyable. 2 more bottles left.

Balanced- there is oak to give it structure but lively red fruit to give it life.
Very much a winner for its price, but likely hard to find- we picked it up
at the vineyard on the way up to Cerro Tololo Observatory

Tonight what struck me was the balance between the bright alcohol, the solid backbone of oak, and the red lively fruit underneath. It went very well with the food, and I think i've found a secret to what what this pair of friends likes in wine: they like the upright stately naked wine that Hedges likes to produce. A very nice bottle.

A deep and complex wine, not overflowing with fruit. Not sure this was what my Napa Valley drinking friends
really like, but I wanted to show them a Kermit Lynch wine and it was lovely. The age is showing. I have two bottles left.

Thanksgiving dinner. This wine is now 9 years old.

Chilled, no decant. It starts out honeyed, oily-smooth, the aged grace dominating. Soon, the flavors shift to pears and apples as the fruit comes forward. An hour later, the Haut-Bergey reminds me of what it was like young: grapefruit citrus, happy and well mannered wine. The more time passes the more the grapefruit comes out.

It seems to have much life yet- I have only one more bottle and I'll try to keep it to 2016+ to see how it aged in the longer run. All around a beautiful happy white.

2011 Syncline Subduction Red Wine

Columbia Valley Red Rhone Blend more

7/3/2014 - james_timothy wrote: NR

Another fan of Syncline; I think this one is just an ok wine by Syncline's standards. Meaning that I like this wine but I don't place it on the same high level that I regarded a couple of their others, most memorably a pure syrah that rang with an astounding clarity.

This Subduction is light and tasty, a virtue, but thin on the back end of the taste profile. I have another bottle and will likely treat it like a rose, chilling it for drinking on a hot day.

Surprisingly good- the winemaker notes say:
37% Cabernet Franc, 32% Merlot, 27% Petite Sirah, 4% Malbec
and 13.5% alcohol. If I was able to buy it locally I'd buy it often.
This bottle was a gift, but it looks to be $16 from the winery. I'd put
it between CMS and Hedges Red Mountain- but on a given night I might
like it more than the Hedges and most always more than the CMS.
