Just Dennis and I on the porch in Stony Brook.
We were both blown away by this one. Probably in my top 3 all time. I noted flavors of coffee and blackberry; Dennis was tasting blueberry and agreed with the touch of coffee.

A young Pinot from Oregon - previously unknown to me.
We drank it after the two WS pinots.

Two noticed a marked effervescent after taste
Started with zero nose but filled out within 20 minutes

A delightfully fruity Pinot from start to finish. Santa Lucia Highlands .... from the renowned Pisoni vineyard. A great pedigree that did not disappoint.

This was my first Pinot from South Africa. After decorking, the nose was nothing but the terroir. I have never tasted anything as earthy ... it was like a handful of dirt. Allowed to breathe for 45 minutes and the fruit began to appear. Berries of all types .... a nice wine after all.

June 11th, 2010 .... Laura called pining for a Pinot. Three glasses later (2 for me, 1 for Laura) and it was history. The wine was predictably excellent and a perfect accompaniment to finger food of goat cheeses and olive tapenade. I'm beginning to favor the Santa Rita Hills terroir above all others.

An appealing earthiness under the ripe cherry fruit in this wine. It grew more savory with air, gaining both freshness and length from the bright middle. Firm and balanced, it was a good match for my filet with Gorgonzola.

Picked up some lemon and pepper on the nose. Sweet in the palate to start and maintains throughout! My 7th Albarino variety and certainly not my last - this one has a screwcap and I thought I would need it until Bill Dearing and I puonded it down in 15 minutes flat!

2008 Folie à Deux Ménage à Trois White

California White Blend more

5/22/2010 - toeswest Likes this wine: 88 points

It calls itself a "California White Wine" and I bought it to see if it's drinkable enough to serve at a backyard wedding in NY in July. It passed the test with flying colors! Available in quantity at $7.95 a bottle. it blends Chardonnay, Moscato and Chenin Blanc in a subtle way that creates an easy tasting wine with or without food. get your checkbook out, Dennis!

Pre dinner drinks with Roula and Bill:

This is the first wine I've had where the label motif (polka dots) was continued onto the cork! The wine looked light gold colored - not the norm for the Rias Baixas region which are commonly much lighter.
Light medium body with the aroma of cantaloupe and pomegranate. Roula found it "oaky". All in all, a nice wine.

1997 Calera Pinot Noir Mélange

Mount Harlan more

4/25/2010 - toeswest Does not like this wine: 80 points

I am opening this 1997 Pinot with some trepidation! Through the Vinturi and into the glass ..... and at first the color reminds me of the reddish-brown Sonoma soil. I've spent half an hour trying to figure this one out - but to no avail. I think it's just too old. Not undrinkable, but not worth any more effort. Chalk it up to not using CellarTracker ... I still have another bottle of this. I'll bring it to Brig's summer wine fest and let some other palates figure it out.

Vin de France Red Rhone Blend more

Last year's trip to Provence and the Med gave us a taste for Rose as a delightful accompaniment to cheese and cold cuts.
This little number comes from the old Roman city of Orange.
Very easy drink. A couple of ice cubes to get it to the temperature at which we were served it in Cannes. Nose is somewhat similar to a Sauvignon Blanc. This one will be gone within the hour!

Just Ilene and I .... unwinding after a gruesome drive from Beverly Hills in Friday rush hour.
Bought this wine from the fridge at Monarch Market so it was very cold.
Started with a fragrant nose of apple, melon and a hint of lime. None of the infamous "cat piss on a gooseberry bush" that often times is associated with this varietal. Turned out to be a great companion to our simple snack of Genoa salami, gorgonzola and mozzarella.
