2019 Fior di Vino Chianti Classico RiservaChianti Classico DOCG Sangiovese Blend, Sangiovese more |
3/27/2024 - Joesap wrote: 84 pointsMy Grade: VG-. This was highly acidic and reduced even 2 hours after opening but improved greatly on day 2 after vacuvin with simple but pleasant cherry fruit juicy acidity and somewhat coarse tannins. This is a decent table wine, just fine for Pizza night, which is about all you can ask for at the modest price.. |

3/27/2024 - Joesap wrote: 95 pointsGrade: EX+. Modern, extracted style, but not overdone. This wine needed a 2 hour decant to settle down and was even better on day 2 after vacuvin. Overall, this is a really great effort. |

2020 Saint Cosme Côtes du RhôneSyrah more |
11/26/2021 - Joesap wrote: 91 pointsMy Grade: EX. An outstanding value, even it it is a bit too young right now. The Saint Cosme estate has been in the same family since 1490! Opened and the tasted 2 days later (vacuvin). Deep Scarlet color, expressive nose of ripe plums, black cherries, licorice, cassis, eucalyptus, black pepper. On the palate: lush, fruit-forward, mouth filling black plums, black cherries, licorice, black pepper, great mouth-feel, firm tannins, good structure and complexity, delicious, a touch of residual sugar, fresh acidity, with a dry, medium length finish of sour berries and black pepper. Give it 3-4 years to reach peak. |

11/26/2021 - Joesap wrote: 87 pointsMy Grade: VG+. This is a great value Cali. Cab, much better than I was expecting given the low price. Fruit-forward, blackberry and blueberry, fine, smooth tannins, low acidity, nice long finish, well made, just too much sweetness from Residual Sugar on the mid-palate for my tastes. |

2009 Antica Masseria del Sigillo Aglianico Taurasi Siglo EllenicoTaurasi DOCG more |
10/24/2021 - Joesap wrote: 85 pointsMy Grade: VG-. This bottle was pretty tired, so this tasting note may or may not be representative of this vintage. Color is Dusky ruby, a little bricked. Nose was closed in at first but gradually opened: dried cherries, black fruit, menthol, cinnamon, flinty notes. Palate is a little flat and shows soft black cherry and blackberry fruit, very polished, silky tannins, some acidity, but finish disappears. |

2016 Càntele Salice Salentino RiservaNegroamaro more |
10/18/2021 - Joesap wrote: 87 pointsMy Grade: VG+ Slightly oddball, but very interesting and unusual wine. 100% Negromaro, which means "Bitter black" and unless you give it at least a 4 hour decant you will understand why as it was unpleasantly bitter until given enough air. Lovely color: dark, opaque purple, garnet rim. Intriguing, slightly astringent/medicinal nose of tar, licorice, bacon, dried marjoram, black olives. Palate is medium-light bodied and complex with juicy, bright cherry, red plum, black olives, black tea, lead pencil, firm tannins on the mid, medium-high acidity and a savory, dried herb finish (see my profile for grades). |

10/18/2021 - Joesap wrote: 82 pointsMy Grade: G. Slightly opaque purple, black cherries, rhubarb, plums and some green notes (snap peas) on the nose. Palate is simple but unbalanced with high acidity fighting with rounded cherry and plum fruit, low tannins, medium sour cranberry finish. Paired well-enough with Sausage, Spaghetti and red sauce (see my profile for grades). |

10/2/2021 - Joesap wrote: 87 pointsMy Grade: VG. Simple but well made and delicious Sauv. Blanc. Very Pale straw in the glass, classic cat-pee nose with lychee and green pair. Very quaffable with green pear and Golden Delicious apple on the palate and nicely balanced, focused acidity (see my profile or grade). |

2017 Mount Edward Pinot NoirCentral Otago more |
10/2/2021 - Joesap wrote: 92 pointsMy Grade: EX. a step up form the 2011 vintage which is the last one I tried: this is serious juice. Color: dark, transparent Garnet, nose is a bit shy with strawberry, cola, vanilla, gravel, hints of cracked cardamon pod and a little funk. Palate is multi-layered and complex with a smooth entry and pure red and black fruit, black tea, a little salinity with polished tannins. Very nice structure and good minerality on the mid. Medium-length, savory and slightly bitter finish. More of an intellectual pleasure than a sensual one (see my profile for grades). |

2018 Bouchard Aîné & Fils Pinot Noir Héritage du ConseillerVin de Pays d'Oc more |
9/27/2021 - Joesap wrote: NRMy Grade: VG. Great value for the price. Pleasant, fruity and quaffable warm-climate Pinot with enough acidity and backbone for near-term aging (3-5 years). Dark cherry with clear rim, Strawberry, Cola flint with a hint of garrigue on the nose. Simple but delicious strawberry, raspberry and cola palate with smooth mouth-feel. Just the ticket for scratching that Pinot Noir itch mid-week (see my Profile for Grades). |

2015 La Finca Malbec Clos d'AngelColchagua Valley more |
9/27/2021 - Joesap wrote: 87 pointsMy Grade: VG. Better on 2nd day after vacuvin. Deep, opaque Mauve in the glass, watery rim. On the nose: somewhat funky, red plums, blueberries, camphor with green bell pepper/gasoline which is a little off-putting but fairly common for Chilean reds. Palate: plush mouth-feel, fairly simple blueberry, back plum, blackcurrant. Medium acidity, slightly hollow mid-palate, fine, chewy tannins, thin, fairly short finish. There are better Malbecs at this price. (see my profile for grades). |

2019 Bodegas y Viñedos de la Marquesa Rioja Valserrano BlancoViura, Macabeo more |
9/27/2021 - Joesap wrote: 91 pointsMy Grade: EX. A really good, age-worthy, White Rioja, definitely a white wine for those who prefer red. Clear Golden color, toasty Oak, lemon, pear and tropical fruit on the nose. This wine delivers multi-layered complexity and depth on the palate with apple, pear, lemon-butter, green melon. Nice long finish. The oak is noticeable but definitely not over-done. Not a wine for Fish or Shellfish, but should work well with Chicken, Squab, Pork or Rabbit. |

2019 Mantellassi Morellino di Scansano MentoreSangiovese more |
9/27/2021 - Joesap wrote: 89 pointsMy Grade: VG+. Bright and breezy Sangiovese/Cab blend, but only 10% Cab, adding some depth and back-bone, but not much else. Color: Transparent Cherry, Tan rim. On the nose: cherry, tar, dried herbs. On the palate: bright, lively cherry and cranberry, high but mouth-watering acidity, firm, fine tannins. Great food wine that really wakes up your palate (see my profile for grades). |

9/16/2021 - Joesap wrote: 82 pointsMy Grade: G. Slightly disappointing even at what is a bargain-basement price for Barolo. Cherry, black fruit, simple palate, smooth, medium acidity, lacking in complexity and structure, short finish (see my profile for grades). |

2017 Corte Rossa BaroloNebbiolo more |
9/16/2021 - Joesap wrote: 88 pointsMy Grade: VG+. Barolo at this price is a rarity and this one was surprisingly good. Cherry, dried herbs, firm but fairly smooth tannins, medium-light bodied, juicy acidity, some complexity and minerality, medium finish. Probably could benefit from a couple more years of bottle aging and should last another 5-8 years. |

2017 Rosa dell'Olmo Barbera d'Astimore |
9/2/2021 - Joesap wrote: 82 pointsMy Grade: G. Simple, pleasant table wine. Transparent cherry color, slightly stewed cherry with rhubarb notes, decent acidity, not much structure, but you can't expect too much at this price point (see my profile for grades). |

2017 Quinta do Vale Meão Douro MeandroRed Blend more |
8/23/2021 - Joesap wrote: NRMy Grade: VG. Tasted better 2 days after opening under vacuvin which shows that this wine is too young to be drinking now. Great structure (big, slightly rough tannins and great acidity) makes this age-worthy but, right now, the structural elements over-power the fruit and the whole is a bit un-balanced. Leave it alone until at least 2025 (see my profile for grades) |

8/19/2021 - Joesap wrote: 92 pointsMy Grade: EX. This Argentinian Chard. takes a good tilt at some of the better 1er Cru Burgundies out there. Pale straw color, lychees, creme brûlée, fresh hay and toasted oak on the nose. On the palate: smooth, buttery entrance, that develops into complex pear, gooseberry and lemon-peel with great mineral drive on the mid-palate, well-balanced acidity and well-integrated oak. Finish is long and spritzy with citrus peel (see my profile for grades) |
