2011 Domaine Pascal Cotat Sancerre Cuvée Spéciale La Grande CôteSauvignon Blanc more |
11/25/2016 - rubipy wrote: NRThis bottle appears to have been on its way to being oxidized, but I have limited experience with Sancerre, so maybe this was the intended style. That said, it had a delicious fragrance of thyme and grilled nuts, was low acid with some sweetness and more grilled nuts on the palate. Medium weight good balance. No official rating, as I'm not sure that other bottles will be like mine (which was stored well on my end). Maybe 91-92. This was top contender for WOTN, which had tough competition, including a J.L Chave White Hermitage from 1998, 2014 Vaillon Chablie from Moreau, 2011 Ganevat Oregane, and 2010 Pithon Paile Saumur Blanc, |

2013 Lioco Pinot Noir Sonoma Coastmore |
2/21/2016 - rubipy wrote: 91 pointsVery good stuff! Sous bois in the nose, and then pretty sonoma red fruits and rose petal. Could have used a little more acidity, but not a glass of cherry cola like so many American pinot noir. I recently went to the West of West tasting in NYC with ~30 wineries all from Sonoma Coast and all serving Pinot noir, with a little chardonnay. The Lioco compares well with the best of them and at half the price. |

2/21/2016 - rubipy wrote: 91 pointsVery good Chardonnay that needs some time in the cellar. Mouth watering acidity, lemon/lime zest, some chalky minerality, a little tropical fruit, and a saline finish. Medium weight, elegant, not fat. Very well done! Great QPR. Get them while they're still affordable. |

2013 Lioco IndicaMendocino County Carignan Blend, Carignan more |
2/21/2016 - rubipy Likes this wine: 90 pointsGood multiple layers of red fruits, my wife smells some bubble gum. Like a cross between a Southern Rhone wine and a Burgundy. Fun, interesting wine, good acidity to go with dinner. |

2/21/2016 - rubipy wrote: 90 pointsWound up on day one, with some rose like floral nose. Opened up on day to a nice cool black raspberry on day two. In the same elegant and restrained style with the other wines from Lioco. Good wine at the price point. Probably needs 2-6 years. |

2/21/2016 - rubipy wrote: 90 pointsElegant, nut oils, tropical fruit, and nice saline finish. Good QPR and not too fat. Tropical fruit stood out with air and acidity faded. If it were French I probably would have rated it an 89, but +1 for a good American Chardonnay at this price point and quality. |

2005 Frédéric Magnien Charmes-ChambertinCharmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir more |
9/6/2015 - rubipy Likes this wine: 91 pointsWas interested in this wine, given the complaints I've heard about Magnien being overly extracted and overly oaked. I drank about 10% of the bottle over about 2-3 hours, while breathing in the glass/bottle, and then consumed the rest with dinner. I enjoyed this wine, and didn't find the oak over powering, although pregnant wife immediately detects wood chips. It also had a bit of a smokey character that may have come from the barrel. It was a beautiful clear ruby/purple color. An ever evolving baking spice and floral nose that was mixed with ripe plum and coffee. The alcohol was fairly high and it had a somewhat thick and soft texture that came across a little flabby and almost buttery. I have not had enough Gevrey Chambertin to know what is typical of Gran Cru, but I suspect that this would not stand up to competition from this vineyard. Nonetheless, it pared nicely with veal ribeye's gently fried in butter. Your standards would have to be a very high not to enjoy this. |

1/5/2015 - rubipy Likes this wine: NRDelicious cotton candy flavors held up extremely well after 6 years in the bottle under mediocre storage conditions. Among my favorite sweet brown belgians. Kind of like a blend of Scaldis and Gouden Carolus Grand Cru. |

11/30/2014 - rubipy Likes this wine: NRReally enjoyed this wine which was dark in color almost black with a brick red rim. Tannins had faded and left a fine wine with roasted fruit character. Dark tastes like chocolate and leather. More enjoyable than the younger version. |

10/26/2014 - rubipy wrote: NRIt took a day for this to open up. It was tight and smelled like a fish tank on the first day even after a couple hours in the decanter. The next day the fruit showed more. I was hoping for more, but not bad. No idea how long it will take this to show, but its going to need awhile. |

2012 Bergström Pinot Noir Shea VineyardYamhill-Carlton more |
10/6/2014 - rubipy wrote: NRMade the mistake of drinking this after a ten year old bottle of Cote-Rotie, which was a wild and smokey delight. By comparison, the 'Shea' tasted soft and flabby. The fruit is pronounced, round, soft, and bright. Some pleasant baking spice made the experience dessert-like. Somewhat viscous The acidity was not pronounced. I suspect some will (and do) really like this style, and perhaps I will on another day, but it didn't sing like one hopes from such a highly regarded pinot noir maker. |

2004 Rene Rostaing Côte-RôtieSyrah more |
10/3/2014 - rubipy Likes this wine: NRReally enjoyed this wine. Wonderful phenolic smell emanates from the bottle on opening. Smokey bacon (2,6-dmethoxyphenol) and cedar smells are potent, but elegant and a refreshing break from the flabby fruit forward wines made in the US. Medium bodied cherry fruit with pleasant acidity. Nicely balanced wine that I will instantly buy if I come across again. My first experience with Cote-Rotie. I'll be looking for more. |
